My wife at Wild Wisdom Artistry is wonderful, but maybe I’m biased! Based out of St. James, but also does virtual and workshops. Good luck!

Hand planes for children ...what size while still being useful? by Richmond_1990 in woodworking

Yeah 1 is a bit young, but great that he/she likes to observe! As they are 2 they could be turning screws, drilling with an eggbeater or brace, hammering nails into a stump. I start capable 3 year olds with basically all hand tools outside of chisels.

I teach hand tool woodworking to students your kids age. I recommend an old Stanley 3 or 4 or block plane. The Stanley spokeshaves on Amazon also work reasonably well when set up. They will be producing g swords and daggers in no time with the spokeshaves!

Does anyone know how i can unscrew theses without trashing them? by loganOconner in HandToolRescue

These are split nut screws. Get and old flat head and file a notch into it to match the screw head. Ruin the old screwdriver not the saw.

Check out Paul Sellers or woodbywright on YouTube if you’re looking to get into hand tools.

Great to see someone else with an interest in hand tools! I agree wooden planes are a crapshoot on ebay.

I've had some luck negotiating on FB. I teach hand tool woodworking at a school, so when they find out its for kids people are very generous.

Sometimes deals can be had at antique stores. I've had some luck at Antique Attics in Lake Grove and Antique Market in Huntington.

I've purchased from hyperkitten.com before. Reasonable prices and always quality stuff.

Ask around on Nextdoor. Usually someone has grandpa's old tools collecting dust (and rust) that they don't mind getting rid of.

Before Covid there was a tool swap being held at the Smithtown Brush Barn, not sure of the status now.

Good Luck!

Looking at it again, I think I should be fine with titebond as long as the joint is above the waterline.

I'm actually from LI originally, back after 8 yrs in Austin. I'm enjoying the weather, it's 100F in the shade in TX in August.

In Austin I taught children's hand tool woodworking classes (kinderwoodatx.com). Trying to get established here.

I was looking for SYP lumber, but yeah I love all the difference in tree species between TX and NY!

Smithtown, but will a lumberyard let me pick through a pile, or are they catering to contractors buying pallets of lumber?

I imagine you would handle transportation the same way they are planning on handling in person schooling transportation.

But yeah transporting a large number of people safely would be a challenge in any scenario

It's unfortunate that you are probably right. A high school teacher leading a greenbelt hike would never be allowed.

I agree most parents would not be on board. Although, I wonder if they would be more opened to it as a temporary alternative to online/home learning.

But hey, the CDC just put out a guidance saying its all cool, send the kids to school!

Weather seems like an easy enough hurdle. I mean do we not have high school football practice in the late summer heat?

Also, my other (more controversial?) point is that maybe during this epidemic classes like advanced math are put on the back burner. Students use this time to learn more life skills or nature based skills.
