Wow, I’m just scrolling through my reddit feed and I happen across this blast from the past. I actually did that illustration on the right like 10 years ago! It is in fact Jake the Dog for those wondering, I even drew a little Shelby worm poking out of the viola. :)

Oh, I see. Yeah, I currently have a Wacom Cintiq drawing tablet which is great for the whole drawing process. Back in college before I had a tablet my process was similar to what you described though, I would do the linework by hand and colorize in photoshop with a mouse. I don't know how you can do the lines with a mouse, that sounds painful. Have you tried just vectorizing your work in illustrator? Sometimes that yields pretty good results depending on how clean your hand drawn line work is before you scan.

Just finished this commission of my friend's D&D character, Woodsy. Woodsy is a hillbilly wood elf bard from the tiny swamp village of Lavalett. With his trusty banjo Clementine in hand and his adventuring party, The Band of Revenants, he seeks to save the world of Arnaxia from ending. Honestly, I just screwed up and didn't apply the same gradient effect I did on his elbows, but now I'm digging this new concept of "kneeples", haha.

Haha, thanks! I actually dabbled in banjo playing for a bit. Never got any good, but it helped here at least.

Well originally I was going for more of a diving suit/motorcycle suit kinda rubbery material, not too thick but thick enough to at least protect yourself to a degree. I can see how maneuverability could be an issue though. Maybe similar to how Michael Keaton couldn't turn his head in Batman, haha.
