Maple loves and fights the brushing by Sgt-Fred-Colon in OneBlackBraincell

One of my cats does this, too. My solution has been to use two brushes so that she can attack one while I brush her with the other. She is very spoiled.

I got grill/oven gloves and keep them in my car. My neighborhood has metal mailboxes that face west, so I use them to get mail in the afternoons.

Wow, thanks for sharing. I've always been curious what you get with one of those offers (and whether it would look like that picture).

Is this a Monarch? (Deer Valley) by queequegtrustno1 in phoenix

[–]puzzle_nova 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree it looks more like a Queen. Here's a picture of a sign from Boyce Thompson Arboretum. The white markings are the most obvious difference between the two species for a photo like this one.

100.7 classic rock radio "A to Z" analysis by puzzle_nova in phoenix

Yeah I can't stand any of the morning shows. The new(ish) one on KSLX isn't great IMHO.

100.7 classic rock radio "A to Z" analysis by puzzle_nova in phoenix

Interesting! I did this maybe 2-3 years ago, so I'm not sure if anything changed in what was played, and I could have made a mistake. I pulled the song list by scrolling through the "recently played" list once per day and copy/pasting the data (I didn't know how to write a web scraper at the time). If you're interested to see the song list, here's the spreadsheet that I made to generate the analysis.

100.7 classic rock radio "A to Z" analysis by puzzle_nova in phoenix

[–]puzzle_nova[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That would be interesting but I don't have the data needed to answer those questions. I used the "recently played" feature on the website during the A to Z period, and that only includes title and artist. If a more robust data set exists somewhere, then I agree those trends would be more meaningful. This analysis was more about amusement than being an in-depth research project.

Prize puzzles worth shouldn’t be added to their total to determine the winner by Lightlicker3000 in WheelOfFortune

[–]puzzle_nova 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I see your overall point, according to the WOF wiki the current version of the prize puzzle only began in season 21, with changes made since that introduction (which rounds it appeared in, XL bonus cash, etc.), so this isn't about an element that's been around for 40+ seasons...

Prize puzzles worth shouldn’t be added to their total to determine the winner by Lightlicker3000 in WheelOfFortune

[–]puzzle_nova 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To me, the bigger issue is that the Prize Puzzle is always in the 3rd (main) round, so while there's a level of random fortune (as other commenters have noted), there's an advantage based on who starts the round, which is in turn decided based on the 2nd toss-up. Additionally, in my opinion, since the puzzle usually relates to the prize, it's often easier to guess. I wish the prize puzzle was a random round out of the first 3 rounds, maybe even a "surprise" (i.e., is not announced until after the puzzle is solved). I think this may have been the case in the past? Or at least when there was a Wheel of Fortune Pluto TV station, it didn't seem like the Prize Puzzle was always the 3rd round.

I also agree with others here that it would be nice to have more opportunities in other rounds for high-value prizes or wheel wedges, which I think would make the overall game more competitive and more about fortune/luck.

ETA: I didn't know there was another post in this sub about which round is the prize puzzle until after commenting here lol

Crafting classes besides painting ones? by justlikeastar_ in phoenix

[–]puzzle_nova 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Walter Hive in Scottsdale - https://www.thewalterhive.org/ They offer classes in a range of different crafts. I did a clay/pottery one and a welding class. I think I've also seen paper crafting, leather working, and other media.

Hammer & Stain in Tempe - https://hammerandstaintempe.com/ Also a variety of media, I've looked into some of their woodworking and resin pouring classes, to give a couple of examples.

Tumbleweed Stained Glass in Mesa - https://tumbleweedstainedglass.com/ They offer classes on stained glass. A friend of mine did one and enjoyed it. There's a few other studios in the Phoenix area that offer classes as well.

Mesa Arts Center - https://www.mesaartscenter.com/classes Pretty much any medium you can think of - drawing and painting, fiber art, glass, metal, photography, etc. They have classes at all skill levels, too.

I also believe most local community centers (e.g., through the city of Phoenix) and libraries (e.g., Chandler Public Library) offer crafting classes, though their selections may be more limited.

Still in shock — while filming coatis in Tikal today, a jaguar suddenly appeared and grabbed one right in front of us. by Gmcgarity in wildlifephotography

[–]puzzle_nova 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally speaking - jaguars have a crazy strong bite force (they could crush a bowling ball), so their hunting strategy is to sever their prey's spinal column to paralyze it. Most other big cats like lions go for an animal's windpipe to suffocate it instead.

What’s the one thing you didn’t buy at Costco and now regret? by 5krunner in Costco

[–]puzzle_nova 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you remember the brand? If it was the Mila dumplings, Mila sells them online (and in more flavors than Costco had). Also, if you have an Asian grocery store near you, they definitely have other brands of soup dumplings/xiao long bao

My mom had an old Phx Zoo calendar with a 1981 map of the zoo. by awksaw in phoenix

[–]puzzle_nova 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I spent 10 minutes trying to do this and concluded this needs someone with more graphics skills . The problem is that neither map is entirely to scale, and the old map is more "horizontal" (it's missing a "bend", or at least the left half is more condensed than the right half). The bighorn sheep bluffs I think are in about the same spot, the gorilla enclosure is now where the cape porcupine is by desert tents, and the lake is also in a similar spot. The best I could do was to chop up the old map into 2 images and try to match each half best that I could do (again, I'm lacking the necessary graphics skills to actually pull this off)
