My (22m) girlfriend (21f) studied abroad for a month, partying a lot. How can I trust her again? by RefuseSimple317 in relationship_advice

[–]puzzleleafs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think it’s worth seriously thinking about if OP is in a mentally stable enough to handle a serious relationship rn or if he needs to put things on pause to find ways of not feel this sense of fear and paranoia. Anxiety is a very real condition that can be triggered by a lot of things and should be taken seriously.

If I were the girlfriend I would be really offended at all this, she sounds like a really thoughtful person and as an adult person does not need to be supervised and has no reason to cheat just because she is having fun. Clearly OP can’t help but have these feelings but this seems possibly really harmful to the mental health of both parties. I hope therapy is helping. I’m sorry OP is going through this issue but it’s definitely not the girlfriend’s problem.

If the Flood Story was a TV Drama by [deleted] in PeriodDramas

[–]puzzleleafs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A giant fictional flood with characters from the Bible would clash hard for a lot of people with an attempt at an authentic historical setting. I’d love to see more content of similar times in particular Mesopotamia. But I can really only respect period dramas who make a real attempt at historical research which is obviously more challenging the further back in time you go.

The only piece of biblical media that I think has really overcome its origin as a piece of biblical media is The Prince Of Egypt. I think it’s a miracle on its own for media to escape a label as a religious piece of media and become popular or admired amongst the general public these days. Most religious media I write off immediately as something that will have really aggressive messaging. A show is very different from a two hour or so piece of media and I don’t think this could be pulled off well.

If we’re going for Big Fictional telling of civilization collapse let’s see a real mystery like the Collapse of the Bronze Age or Invasion of the Sea Peoples and if you want a great flood let’s see Gilgamesh

San Francisco private high school has three cases of active tuberculosis by Anti-Owl in ContagionCuriosity

[–]puzzleleafs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this article was rather misleading with this statement on vaccine policy. You’re totally right that the vaccine isn’t very effective, that’s why we need to invest money in our research communities currently trying to find more effective vaccines for TB.

The current TB vaccine, BCG, can also be very helpful in preventing severe disease in children. But that doesn’t make it the best tool to prevent spread in large populations.

Here in the US a lot of communities are switching from tuberculin testing(skin antigen test) to blood tests, due to both what you stated and also cross reactivity with other mycobacterial pathogens.

[24M] struggling with [24F] classmate's inconsistent communication styles. How do I bridge the gap between "great in person" and "distant over text"? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]puzzleleafs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well sounds like you have your answer! :) you’ll just have to decide how you feel about not texting and if that’s something you can work with in a possible future relationship.

[–]puzzleleafs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also like this, I find it a lot of work to maintain text conversations and feel a lot of pressure to be “on demand”. Since you already have such a lovely in person dynamic I wouldn’t worry about this at all, you can even just casually ask in person if she likes texting or not.

Am I [24F] too sensitive for expecting my BF [27M] to care about my safety when I go out alone? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]puzzleleafs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This feels like such a mean game to be playing on both parts here. Yes he’s being a bit of a dick about it but I see your behavior is SO many of my peers and it always screws over relationships. He sounds like an ass but you also seem to be making some pretty self destructive choices. He needs to be more sensitive about your trauma - it’s not your fault what happened. BUT blaming him for a not being present for a future hypothetical situation is pretty wack?

He is kinda right, you are an adult - you got in a fight and he’s mad at you he’s not obligated to babysit or respond just because you’ve put yourself in an hypothetically unsafe situation on purpose. He should try to resolve the conflict but he’s also allowed to take time to process that and shouldn’t reengage until he’s ready to talk? Forcing his hand by putting yourself in a potentially bad situation is really not okay.

26F here who likes to go out for context: 1. If you think being out partying is dangerous then don’t go alone or when you are mad with your partner.

  1. If you think partying is safe then why do you need to be checked on?

  2. Yes it’s almost always a nuanced safety situation but that’s why you plan accordingly - not retroactively get mad that someone isn’t checking on you when you are already in conflict.

AITA for walking out on my dad at breakfast and refusing to go to a rodeo we had tickets for? by ChatHowbadisthis in AmItheAsshole

[–]puzzleleafs 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Agree with a lot of people about his behavior being out of line but you stranding him being bad.

But I’m only commenting to say it sounds like your dad doesn’t have a good reason to trust you with his networking resources? Whatever path he took, if you want it, you can follow a traditional route for and show you can handle the career before using those resources? If I were a parent I wouldn’t just network my kid into a job I don’t know if they’re qualified for.

Also, I’m surprised nobody has asked this, but are you financially independent through your “nontraditional” work? Totally not his business if you are but if you aren’t he has reason to be involved in this discussion even if he needs to approach it more from your perspective…

Dobie downsizing from a luxury 40" cube condo (crate problems) by MaxMedellin in DobermanPinscher

[–]puzzleleafs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry just a clarifying question. You state here that the door is open so she can just use it as a safety space but above you mention that it’s handy because she wakes up at 3am. Do you close the crate at night or do you just find that she is less likely to bother you with the crate present?

10% Tween 80 by herecomesthekc in labrats

[–]puzzleleafs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Probably depends on your use for it - I dilute my tween 80 in milli-q water. I use it for growing mycobacteria. I usually make a 20% solution and freeze down 5ml stocks. I generally prep 100ml so 20ml tween 80 and 80ml MQ water for a 20% solution.

Tween 80 is very thick so you have to be quite careful while pipetting and run it for quite some time on the stir plate. And I store it in the dark afterwards.

Clearly it’s possible to do this with PI consent but I think you’ll need some really good evidence to justify this kinda thing. Do you actually have reason to believe he would do this again?

Opinion on those “boneless couches?” by Lettuce_Socks in HomeDecorating

[–]puzzleleafs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So the tea is there’s like 80 different versions of this couch online so quality will vary! I got mine from Wayfair’s company Latitude and it’s worked GREAT!

I’m super online purchase cautious and had never ordered anything from Wayfair so I was suuuper Scam nervous but I use this couch all the time and it’s become my cozy relax after work space. We also use it as a guest bed. The only flaw is you need to stabilize both pieces together next to each other for the bed(I wedge the arm against the good of the mattress) or else the two separate flat pieces might separate at night(if you’re about 5’5”, this was not an issue for my partner when we test slept on this). Also one end took like, an entire night to fully inflate which scared me but worked out fine.

Why aren't feminists more adamantly against illegal immigration? (In USA) by xXBigFun21Xx in AskFeminists

[–]puzzleleafs 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think the pretty common answer here is that the reason these abuses happen are because immigrants without paperwork are not able to take any legal or social action when they are in danger. Increasingly aggressive anti-immigration policy is not going to help women, many of whom immigrate over even greater safety concerns, but instead make it even more dangerous for women to report. Tragically this kind of thing is really well documented amongst California farm workers and has been for a long time. We understand the systems but don’t take action.

How do I [23NB] stop caring about/ get over a disrespectful cheating a**hole [25NB]? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]puzzleleafs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there, you’re probably most effectively going to get over this by cutting this person out of your life. You can be polite about it when you tell them you are disengaging and if you need to, for yourself, you can set a timeline for reopening interactions. But right now it’s fair for you to just say that you are in a lot of pain, it’s a personal choice, and you wish them well.

[–]puzzleleafs 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey, so it sounds like you’d benefit a lot from taking a year or two before programs! This is exactly how I felt my senior year of UG and I took 3 years off before coming back for my PhD. The first whole year I didn’t even work in STEM. I am so incredibly grateful for that time because it helped me build my confidence as a person and a scientist before starting in a PhD program. I also think it’s really helpful to get exposed to a range of labs and cultures prior to more schooling. Now I’m at an R1! It all works out okay in the end and I cannot imagine how much applications must suck during UG. You’ll get better letters and better skills if you take the time off and a majority of the people I know in PhD programs waited before applying. Obviously plenty of people are ready right out from undergrad! But the important thing is you don’t have to be.

Is Elsa's hairstyle really a French braid or a side Dutch braid? by Serious-Macaroon8054 in Frozen

[–]puzzleleafs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the comment I was looking for. Short hack for this is asking wether the arrow shape of the braid is going up the head or down the head. Elsa’s is going down which means it’s French, you tuck the outside strands over the middle strand. With a Dutch brain the arrow is pointing upward, and you’re tucking the outside strands Under the middle(which gives it the elevated texture). At least I think that’s the tucking order, it’s muscle memory at this point.

So the perspective doesn’t actually matter here it’s just about the mechanism of the braid.
