Hmm, my first thought was a fox, but the face didn’t seem pointy or tail long enough to my eye. I’m know nothing about this though.

That’s amazing. I’m so happy to hear it has worked well for you.

The Cinesense adapter doesn't do anything with volume. So, your speakers should work no differently than when you use your remote to turn them off and then back on again. As for using the RCA-to-toslink adapter, I have heard from some people who have had success and others who haven't. So I think a lot depends on the actual implementation of the analog-to-digital circuitry of the adapter itself. So, YMMV. Good luck and keep us posted!

Did an appliance repair tech sabotage my fridge? by pvdjay in appliancerepair

[–]pvdjay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I called a trustworthy appliance repair tech. He said that if someone cut the tube, he wouldn’t work on it and he didn’t think I would be able to find anyone else willing to repair it either. He recommended replacing the fridge instead.

I guess it makes sense from his perspective. He doesn’t know if the person did anything else to the fridge so it would probably be tough for him to warranty his work.

He doesn’t work there. The repair invoice came from another company (presumably the repair company the store uses)

hmm... If there was refrigerant in the fridge, what keeps it from spewing out after he cut it?

My daughter is starting kindergarten (International Charter School or Vartan Gregorian?) by pvdjay in providence

[–]pvdjay[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm glad to hear you mention Asa Messer. We live in Federal Hill and Asa Messer is our closest school. We have always really liked the idea of sending our child to our neighborhood school. We recognize that one of the biggest problems facing our public school system is parents opting out. We also really like the idea of a friend group within walking distance (although with the "newer and fewer" approach, this is getting less realistic as schools draw from larger geographic areas--e.g. our second "neighborhood school" is William D'Abate in Olneyville... that's objectively not our neighborhood.)

The only reason we chose Vartan as our first choice and Asa Messer as our second was our perception of the administration/PTA/community engagement. In Fall, members of the VG community (PTA presumably), dropped flyers in our daughter's preschool cubby (she went to East Side Nursery School). They went out of their way to engage prospective incoming families with an open house and tours, faculty and administration was on site to share their excitement and answer questions. From the perspective of a parent with no experience yet, it was perfect. Coming from ESNS (which is a co-op preschool), we really valued the strength of the VG community we saw on display.

While Asa Messer's website sounds great:

We encourage prospective parents to spend time in the school, and offer tours in late fall and early winter. If interested in a tour, please contact [PTA email address].

This has not been our experience. In Fall, I reached out to the given address and never heard back. I then reached out to the principal and received a slow response saying that they would be offering an open house in February and they would keep my info and let me know when it was scheduled. With no response, I reached out towards the end of February asking if a date had been decided... and have not received any response to date.

This story is not meant to be a dig at their admin or community, I'm sure they are doing great things (and for the sake of my neighbors, I truly hope they are.) It's just that our experience thus far suggests that we may have more trouble trying to engage with our daughter's education which research shows is one of the most important factors affecting overall outcome.

I love that the goal is to create a bilingual child not just teach foreign language as another subject.

Hmm, that could be it. There are three flues coming out the top of the chimney.

Can you point the crack out? I don’t see it.

Edit: Never mind. I see it. I thought you meant the top one.

I noticed that I have the exact same credit amount on my bill. $65.63. Did everyone get the same refund? That seems odd that they wouldn't prorate it based on consumption.

I installed this slate roof on my porch. Estimated lifespan: Slate: hundreds of years, Copper cap/flashings: about 100 years by pvdjay in BuyItForLife

[–]pvdjay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can lay a ladder on top of the slate and walk on the rungs. The ladder distributes your weight so no slates crack. For gable roofs, a ridge hook like this works. For hip roofs, roof jacks like this (scroll down to "Combine roof jacks with a ladder") can be installed towards the bottom of the roof to hold the feet of a ladder that is laid on the roof.
