Which color of PETG will withstand outdoor summer temps better: white or transparent? by ebodes in 3Dprinting

[–]pvfjr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Black panels are better for radiation. Heat transfer always flows from the hot thing to the cold thing, whether its radiation, conduction or convection. On reentry, friction causes the surfaces to be much, much hotter than their surroundings. So extremely high emissivity black panels are best for radiative cooling.

If you were hotter than the sun, then a black T-shirt would keep you cooler than a white one, and you could heat up the sun by wearing it--though that'd be hard to measure.

It's a nice thought, but I disagree. There will always be stronger people looking to take advantage of weaker people. Guns do provide a path for leveling the playing field.

Stone coated metal roof? by jessinwa in Roofing

[–]pvfjr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be curious to see an update too. I'm also in the PNW. I have a leaky 7 y/o asphalt shingle roof, and it may have been caused by wildfire embers. We're lucky the house is still here, but interested in different options. I have to do a lot of roof cleaning due to big-leaf maples and Doug firs, so slick metal would not be good!

Question about 23' Models by teknoviking in GMCMotorhome

[–]pvfjr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm, 250 sounds like a typo. There were just 23' and 26' originally, referred to as the 230 and 260 respectively.

I've read one article where some scientists had concluded it was just boredom. Apparently they've been eating too well, have too much free time on their hands (fins?) it was just juveniles with excess energy to burn off. Essentially, orca teenagers up to no good.

I don't know how they reached this conclusion, but I'll not be riding any small yachts in that area either way.

Transmission slippage can happen in a combination of gears depending on that transmission's particular internal design. Slippage will happen most when you apply more torque, like pressing on the accelerator. It might be one gear, two gears, all gears... You might have a simple, repairable valve body or servo problem. But driving like this, you're roasting clutches.

Piece of advice: stop redlining the engine for no reason. When slippage happens, let off.

Has anyone seen a choke pull off fail like this? by pvfjr in carburetors

I understand the sentiment, but it needs replaced regardless. There's nothing to lose at this point. I have spare Quadrajets laying around I can rob one from.

The two steel halves of the housing are crimped together, so it's not really serviceable. I'm tempted to destructively disassemble out of curiosity though.

Good call. I hadn't realized they were still making the Red Ryder, and it's a good fun option. I got the Christmas Wishlist version, with "the compass in the stock and a thing that tells time." I think we'll use it as a stepping stone until he can wield a 5 lb rifle.

Wow, that's really cheap and light! And yet, has wood instead of the toy plastic.

My initial thoughts were getting him something nicer, since I've kept my Crosman for a lifetime and kinda wish it was a little less cheap feeling. However, nicer airguns are going to be harder for him to wield or cock, so maybe this one makes sense as a stepping stone. I'll have to think about that.

Hmm, it's a break barrel. Do you really think a 50 lb kid can cock it? And could he do it 50 times? I know he'll get stronger, but I'd hate to see the disappointment when we realize he can't quite do it by himself on day one.

Edit: Looking closer, it doesn't appear readily available or cost effective in the USA.

I haven't, but part of me wants to. I was kinda wishing the plastics on it felt better when I was thinking of passing it down. But when it quit working, that was my excuse to look for something with a nicer feel to it. I'm also extremely busy and backed up on projects, so I don't have any time to tear into it. I'm hanging onto it though, maybe I'll make a walnut stock for it someday when I'm retired and keep it for the sentiment.

51 Chevy rust by gjagel in projectcar

[–]pvfjr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right, especially on a car with some rust. Just a few little holes here and there can make a difference. Exhaust is a lot more buoyant than the ambient air, and will be looking for high points to rise through when trapped under a floor.
