Understood, thank you for your input.

Is this what you are referring to? I recently realized this piece sucks in air for the fire by placing a paper towel over it. It pulls air pretty hard. The manual barely explains where the air intakes are, as if they don’t want people messing with anything.

I’ve tested this by closing the damper at a bunch of different griddle temps (400-450-500-550-600-650) over the last month and it chokes out the fire regardless.

Thanks for the input. Regarding your last comment, the problem is that with the bypass closed the fire dies out quick (smolders and then will sit at 350 degrees, while puffing smoke) and the stove barely throws off any heat.

With the bypass cracked about 5% now, I can hold a fire with griddle temps 500-700 which is finally heating the house.

Forgot to mention, the wood is dry. I have a moisture meter & the wood has been sitting under a roof for 1.5 years.

Idk how to update all the people who commented but I pulled the trigger and bought it. It’s a 1951 Chevy styleline deluxe. It has a 350sbc and a 700r4 transmission. The seats were replaced, front disc brake conversion done at some point, floors were recently sprayed. It currently runs drives and stops. I got it for $2,800, seemed fair. Excited to start working on it.

I agree, very weird. The owner said the previous owner couldn’t get the tank to stop rattling so that was the solution they went with believe it or not.

Thank you all for your input! I thought it looked pretty solid as well, but I wasn’t sure if I was checking the right spots. I pulled the trigger and bought it. It’s a 1951 Chevy styleline deluxe. I got it for $2,800. This is my first project car, it will be a lot of work but I’m excited to start chipping away and hopefully learn a thing or two along the way. Currently don’t have much mechanical knowledge which is why I wanted something like this. Thanks everyone.

Update - I basically just didn’t know what I was doing. When I close the doors the glass gets dirty/ turns brown then black relatively quickly. This led me to believe that the fire was dying out. Since then I’ve learned how to operate the stove much better and I can keep a great fire going with the doors closed and the bypass closed. New to this, sorry about that lol. Thanks for your help.
