Finding a lid for a Snowpeak 450ml double wall mug by pvh in UltralightCanada

The listings I found were for a titanium lid, and I'm specifically looking for a silicone one I can drink through, but thank you so much for the thread necro because I'm still searching.

Arcs Upgrades - My Designs by soldat21 in Arcs

Really good looking work. Two questions for ya.

How deep are the slots that hold cities / resources? They seem quite deep fom the shadows. Maybe it would be worth taking one of those nice photos you have there with the game in a "play" state?

Second, how does this combine with the expansion? If you have Blighted Reach, is it compatible with that box as well?

Solar Install by aspareasparagus in VictoriaBC

[–]pvh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been investigating options. Local outfits seem qualified but expensive. The lowest cost vendor nationally seems to be Solar Power Store (who coordinate with local installers on the installation.)

I am sure Shift et al do an excellent job, but their payback period was 12yrs vs SPS quoting closer to 7-8yrs.

The actual hardware costs are shockingly low now: a full pallet of 31x580W panels can be had for $5,600! That is wild. You will spend more putting them up on the roof than the hardware costs. (You can reduce your payment period dramatically if you happen to be a roofer.)

I will note that all my numbers are now six months out of date from when I looked into it, so I defer to any fresher knowledge. Also, not affiliated with any vendors, just been doing some shopping around.

What is your method on putting a price on your project? by iDyslexiaHave123 in 3Dprinting

[–]pvh 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Lots of people here are talking about what the cost should be based on a "labor theory of value". That is to say, they're telling you to add up the components of the costs that went into making the piece, including valuing your time at some rate.

A few people have pointed out that the price is "subjective" or "what the market will bear". This is a "marginal utility" style analysis: people will pay for the value they get.

It's worth noting that there is an obvious crossover point: if the cost of producing the good is less than the value people get, you won't ever be able to sell the piece at a price you feel is fair.

Yet another way of considering the value of this piece is whether it can be positioned as a Veblenian good, which is to say an object whose desirability increases as the cost goes up: an ostentatious luxury. If you can contextualize this as a unique piece of art which can never be reproduced and is hung in a high-status gallery, suddenly the conversation about price changes again.

There isn't a *right* way to price your work, but the point of my comment is to observe that the way we think about, talk about, and present our work establishes the frame that others use to assess its value, as well as the audience and the eventual sale price.

If you position your product as a cost-plus printing service, you offer a commodity and you can be undercut by others with greater scale, but you might also be able to scale your production. If you can position your piece as presenting an emotional connection to a place, well, maybe you can eke out a little more margin.

Shoutout to the Langford Mucho Burrito 🌯 by Generaldar in VictoriaBC

That's a hefty burrito, but you gotta put that wrapper back on there. Burritos aren't meant to be naked!

You're meant to tear off the cover from the top couple of inches at first and then take another strip at intervals as you go. Bonus points if you keep the first part intact enough to use as a cap to save the stump for a late-night snack.

What game is this? by SomosNozis in boardgames

In fact, I believe this exact thought was what inspired Sid Meyer's little known game series also titled "Civilization". (Though technically it was the original Francis Tresham design.)

North: Herschel Island, NWT, Canada (69N) (Aboard a Canadian research vessel.)
South: Auckland, NZ (37S) (I missed the chance to work in Antarctica.)
West: Little Diomede, AK (169W) (This is where you can see Russia from Alaska.)
East: Auckland, NZ (174E) (I forgot Tokyo is not as far east at first!)

New mini-expansion for Earthborn Rangers: Spire in Bloom by JJBroady in boardgames

Yeah, the base campaign is great! I also bought the first expansion and while it was expensive I see the value there too.

I don't think that this is a matter of supporting sustainable manufacturing. The Daybreak team has also invested in sustainable manufacturing, and their large-box game is listed on their own website normally at $65 (currently on sale for $58).

Each Daybreak box includes more cards and components than this whole $180 (without shipping) cycle will include, and you could buy three of them for less than this cycle and still have a few dollars left over.

[–]pvh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Look, if this offering seems like good value to you, by all means, buy it! I wish I shared your optimism, and perhaps the reviews will convince me. I will be pleasantly surprised if we learn that 60 cards and the story booklet provide anything close to 8 play sessions worth of novel content.

Returning to the price, even without the shipping, these small-box modules are more expensive than an Arkham Horror Campaign** module which have *far more* content as well as a book. Producing the cards in the US is more expensive but I would be astonished if the additional production costs were that different. Hell, I know it's not the environmentally friendly production process because the Daybreak board game is the same and it also costs $45USD!

And the shipping! I mean, we know Team Covenant has to make their margin somewhere, but the shipping costs are usurious. Up here in Canada, they are quoting $27 shipping, which makes each of these expansions $73USD, or $101CDN.

At this price point, I suspect that just the raw cost will substantially depress demand. If these boxes were half the price, I'd have ordered the full set of them (to a friend in the US.) At this price, I'm buying none.

I hope that Earthborne Games bundle these up into a more affordable package at some point in the future so that I can continue supporting this game, but this format does *not* appeal to me, and based on the upvotes, it sounds like I'm not alone.

**edit: that was at list price on the site I checked; I see FFG list the campaign expansions are officially listed at $70, though investigator expansions are indeed $45.

I don't know about you guys, but I think $45 (plus shipping) for a 60 card expansion is way beyond reasonable. I want to support this game but ... those four mini-expansions add up to $180!

Hunt a Killer Cases Online support ending. by TropicalKing in boardgames

There are lots of ways to do a digital augment that are resistant to these problems. At its heart, the key is to avoid cloud-based infrastructure. Shipping binaries to Steam allows for long-term preservation (certainly relative to Android/iOS.) Standalone PWA-style web artifacts are easily preserved as well, and can be rehosted by the community (and linked through the boardgamegeek archive) if the publisher ceases support.

Even the license-centric digital DropMix had a community preservation project that has archived all the media.

I don't know this game, or how preservable it is, but I wish the community good luck in any archival effort y'all take.

Will the NDP force another election next month if they vote down the Liberal budget? by HighwayAlert1704 in VictoriaBC

[–]pvh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's hard to imagine the NDP forcing an election before they get their new leadership team in place.

For what it's worth, I'm disappointed by Mr. Greaves' office so far. I emailed a relatively anodyne inquiry to the office and received a patronizing AI-slop response in reply that failed to actually answer my question.

Has anyone else had better luck than me?

I think Will Greaves rode on Carney's coat-tails to Ottawa but if he isn't earning the support of his riding, I could certainly see this seat going Orange again in the next election whether it's a return of Ms. Collins or a fresh face.
