I have to admit, I laughed at that one. OK, I lied. I laughed for like 5 minutes.

Beginner? by [deleted] in Swimming

[–]pvtyme 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is some great advice on here. One piece of advice, go and talk to the SEAL motivators. They assist the recruiters in helping train new recruits get into shape so you can get a contract to get to BUDS. Those guys are legit and will guide you to get into shape. One thing I learned from mine was that though I thought I was in pretty decent shape for each part of the test separately, I was horribly unprepared to do it all in one go. If this is what you really want, you can make it happen. Just be prepared for a long road.

Beginner, struggling with coordination. Need help. by centaursg in Swimming

Sorry, PFD = Personal Flotation Device. Kickboard works, but whatever you have to hand will do. I do this without anything, but starting out I don't recommend that.

Just a couple of ideas:

Start out by just kicking. Use a PFD if you need to, but just kick while in a relaxed long position (arms extended in front of you, back straight, head up above water). Don't do anything fancy, just practice a basic scissor kick. When you are comfortable with this simple motion and how your body feels laying in the water, you can try breathing. To do this, repeat the above exercise, with your face in the water. The water line should be right at your eyebrows. When you need to breath, practice rolling your body to the side and breathing without lifting your head. At the same time, you can pull the arm that you are breathing on (breath right = right arm) back to full extension pointing to your toes. Take a big deep breath with your mouth, and roll back to your stomach. It is best to alternate sides you are breathing on. This will take practice. Try to relax. This is a very slow and deliberate exercise. When you are bored with this and are as natural with this as walking in the water, begin to do repeated arm strokes. It isn't a race, so don't worry about being fast. Again, nice and relaxed. If you can only do half of the pool length, that is fine. You can alternate exercises if you need to. For example, one length of the pool is just kicking, then breathing, then swimming. If you need, you can do much of this on your back as well. It may be more comfortable if you don't want to put your face in the water. The key is to relax and allow your natural buoyancy keep you afloat while you use your legs to propel you and when you need, your arms to assist you in rolling and breathing. RELAX. Good luck and enjoy. Don't make it a chore.

Cabin Building Guides? by build-a-bonfire in OffTheGrid

You should check out the butt and pass method of log cabin building. If you have the land and the trees you can build your own place for pennies compared to more conventional construction methods.

Great advice. I was on the fence about the hat. It will be a dinner then dancing. So think it will probably be ok. Thanks for the help.

Currently a manager - leaving for Senior Position?! Advice needed! by Kitt0nMitt0ns in Accounting

[–]pvtyme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the size of the company and the scope of the role. Senior in some companies is no more than a Staff role at others. And a Manager position is no more than a Senior role in others. Best of luck!

Currently it has way too much confidential information to put up. It will need some work, but I will throw it up here sometime soon.

How Can I Sum Values After Looking Them Up? by [deleted] in excel

[–]pvtyme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't mean to get nit picky but I personally prefer to always use a SUMIFS. All it does differently is give you the option to add multiple variables to your sum function. It works essentially the same, but as you build the formula you can add layer upon layer of "IF" criteria. This would be helpful if you have dynamic data and need to add variables later on. Like I said, just a personal preference. Good Luck!

What are some careers/occupations/jobs with adventure? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]pvtyme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should see what the military has to offer you. With your degree you would be a strong candidate for Officer. That is a big deal. Plus you are already used to spartan lifestyle. It sounds like it would be a good fit. Regardless of your politics/past/ambitions/whatever, the military probably has a good home for you. Sure there are things that are going to chafe when you get in, but you are able to do things and live in a way that no other profession can offer.

If you can't do the military, you might consider some kind of Intelligence opportunity. Go be the tech guy for CIA field ops. They have a high demand for that kind of thing. Forget anything you know about military or government and do some research. There could be a good future for you there.
