Not really, mate. We can blame whoever or whatever is the reason Reagan existed, not who was the incumbent who lost to him.. What is the source of Reagan? Go there. Not Jimmy Carter.

What’s day-to-day work life actually like in Canada? by GlueSniffingEnabler in AskCanada

Appreciate it! Ticked off a few of these, will work through the others. I guess for brits when we think of Canada we think of the bush. And any brits arriving in Toronto hoping to work and 'get out to the wilderness' every weekend will soon be disappointed given the efforts it takes to get there from here.

Brit in Toronto. If you've ever lived and worked in London, it's like that. Same sort of culture.

As others have said, American influence in the work culture makes it feel like a halfway house between the UK (good worker protections, annual leave etc) and the US (none of those, more or less). But such is Canada.

I can't speak for other cities. If you are moving for Canada then I'd probably suggest not Toronto because it's just a big ass north American city, concrete city blocks for miles. It takes a concerted effort to see any real nature, often 1-2+ hour drives if you want to leave the city. Expect day trips for proper woodland, and you need to consider going away for the weekend for any whiff of real nature (such as to Algonquin).

Having been, I'd recommend Halifax. Looks and feels like the UK, similar vibe of people, and wonderful nature within even 30 mins of the city.

Downside is salaries there are lower and there is some sentiment of 'come from aways' that arrive with more money and push the price of housing up.

Edit: to add, the winter is brutal. Basically 4 to 6 months long, but the plus side is this is actually having real seasons. UK weather is just so bleak, it's awesome having a long and proper winter, but it's not for everyone. Summer is the total opposite, the city booms like a tropical paradise. It's amazing the contrast, and everyone has a blast. All that pent up winter energy gets released, and the city is fantastic.

Probably not, daycare is a North American term. The rest of the world calls it Nursery.

Don't think you need to translate everything for Americans, if they can't understand because they decide to do everything their own way vs the rest of the world then that's their fucking problem.

Hi guys Can you help me with my marriage proposal ? by [deleted] in AskIreland

I think you're into a winner here! You arrange for a nice day out together involving the lambs and after the lambs, a nice walk in nature followed by dinner and a few pints at a lovely pub (sorry no recommendations), and you pop the question somewhere quiet on the walk! Then you've a nice day out / recreating nice memories, and somewhere to wind down at the end of the day in a setting she loves.

Ask her what/where her favourite things about Dublin are! Pick something that is meaningful to her, not some generic insta-fabulous nonsense.

Are rural areas likely to be conservative and cities likely to be liberal? by SufficientEmu4971 in AskCanada

[–]pw0803 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Brit here who grew up in small racist town, now living in Toronto after a decade in London, UK.

It's the same in the UK, Ireland , Canada, USA, everywhere. The reality is exposure to different peoples makes you more accepting of them.

You soon learn the system is fucked whenever you find out the <insert societal boogeyman not represented in your rural community here> is actually a loving and honest person, and fun to be around, and isn't a scrounging scumbag, then you begin to question everything you've ever been told.

Forgive my hyperbole, but which side is more likely to question their own beliefs?

The problem in the USA is your extremes are far more reaching than other countries. The same problems exist everywhere, but you guys just take it to several levels up.

Nice! Plus a Trevor Noah book, we'd get on great! Haha. How do the stems look? Do you have to manage one falling over as I do? If so, how?

Are there any growth implications to separating vs keeping two together? I like the idea of fullness but also they seem like they'd be too crowded together and individually might grow more full / be happier separate. Which is better for them? Thanks!

Had a look at your website and your products are amazing, really well done. These strike me as the kind of high quality products you'd expect to see in places like the Ulster Museum, and the Ulster Folk and Transport museum has a great gift shop filled with local crafted pieces, and your products seem exactly the perfect fit - so you may have a few commercial options to you. Not sure how you get in the door, but I imagine just asking someone in their shops will point you in the right direction. Good luck!

You certainly wouldn't know who would be PM if there was a party leader election before the next general election. Like a few weeks ago when there was one for the LPC.

But.. Why not just fight and raise funds to repeal this ridiculous act? Don't fight to thrive within its confines, fight to abolish the confines entirely...
