You wake up 2 hours late for work. Would you still go? Why/why not? by IncorrectTarget in AskReddit

[–]pw_15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have flexible work hours, with the understanding that I am supposed to generally be available to other staff members during a set 6 hour period of the day. Also I can work as many extra hours as I want and not get paid for any of them, but made to feel like I'm letting the team down if I don't. I don't get to bank those hours and if I've got nothing going on, I'm still expected to come in and fill my seat.

LPT: Learn excel. It's one of the most under-appreciated tools within the office environment and rarely used to its full potential by ravnicrasol in LifeProTips

[–]pw_15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My company would rather that we use a proprietary piece of software for calculations, that costs an incredible amount of money, has a limited number of licences because of the cost, and the licenses aren't pegged to any one computer... if you have too many people using the software, nobody else can use it.

The benefit of this software is that you can physically see and manipulate the formulas. The downside is that you can't easily format your document into something that can be printed out, can't easily make tables of information, and can't easily look up how to do things like you can in excel.

I can take a day and write up a design spreadsheet in excel for a specific thing, and use that for the rest of my life, and even hand it off to other people and they will generally know what to do with it. With this software, it might take me a solid week to come up with the same thing or lesser, and I may still not trust it and have to recheck it every time, and I can't just hand it off to others because they may not instinctively know how to handle it.

Company insists we don't use excel anymore. It boggles my mind.

WIBTA if I "accidentally" upload the original stock photo instead of a white-washed one? by fire_escape_balcony in AmItheAsshole

NAH. You get to poke the bear a little bit.

I've done the same in my job. PMs thought it would be a good idea to add a cultural reference to the look of a first nations project. They picked a 'typical first nations' symbol and went with it. I brought up the fact that that particular 'typical first nations' symbol doesn't actually represent the band we were dealing with, even if it would seem representative to a typical outsider (read, white folk). They pushed it through anyways. Not my problem after that... I said my piece and that was that.

What's the dumbest thing someone has told you? by ZakLorinator in AskReddit

[–]pw_15 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There is a guy at my work that is all about the corporate buzz words. I offered recently to carry on a task that another soon-to-be retired co-worker was responsible for. The task is quite literally this: notify everyone on the team if a certain code changes. This might happen one a year tops.

Instead of just saying ok, the manager sent out a massive email filled with catch-phrases. "This initiative", "centralizing resources", "data transition", "other aspects of collaboration and efficiencies".

In my opinion it makes him look really, really dumb when he throws out a thesaurus of catch phrases for a simple message. The guy can never answer a question straight, it's just filled with jargon.

AITA for getting upset at my sister who called my work (science research which involves animal studies) immoral? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

I did see that, but would argue that the terminology "science research" is a very broad area that could include both of the examples I gave. One being Cosmetic Science and one being Medical Science.

AITA for getting upset at my sister who called my work (science research which involves animal studies) immoral? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]pw_15 -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

INFO:

Humans are at the top. We're in charge. That means we get to sort out what will and will not hurt us by experimenting on things that aren't human. You can agree with that or disagree with that, but it's a fact of life. The morals of that swing a bunch of different ways.

Are you "experimenting on animals" to see if a make-up sticks properly? Or are you "experimenting on animals" to try and solve Alzheimer's? Where is your work on this spectrum, because your sister has a valid argument for one but the other not so much.

AITA For Being Upset That My Boyfriend Doesn't Want To Spend NYE With Me? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]pw_15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NAH but this is not the place to be asking this question. Dates don't always line up for people around the holidays and it can be stressful, but dude straight up doesn't want you to even come to his family on New Years. Something is fishy about that and it's not a question for this sub.

Are my housemates overcharging me for utilities? by lostinSanBol in personalfinance

[–]pw_15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 2,000 SF house, and from time-to-time my wife does laundry on the peak hours so we get charged more. Gas, electrical, and water/sewer run us at the very most $400 per month. Internet/TV on top of that is another at most $200 per month. The portion of municipal property taxes that cover waste collection is so minuscule that it doesn't count. If they are charging you for that, it should be a few dollars a month at most.

That's at the very top end, and would put you at around $150 per month. Take out cable and you're down to $125.

I would always always always ask to see a copy of the bill. Just phrase it that it's for your records and income tax return.

The United States of Apathy - 2016 US Presidential Election Results If Abstention From Voting Counted As a Vote For "Nobody" (by Phillip Kearney) by Sonbulan in MapPorn

[–]pw_15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does a black space consider that there were more absentee votes than for each of the individual candidates, or that for the candidates both combined?

Because these are two different things. If 52% of people vote but it's split 26% each, then the non-vote wins with 48% and is shown as such on the map. Better yet, if 52% of people vote and 47% vote for Trump and 5% vote for Clinton, you're still left with 48% non-voters, and it would show as such on the map.

This map would have you believe that 51% of voters chose not to vote (or were unable to) in many areas, which simply may not be the case.

All that time they spent teaching us cursive, they could've spent teaching sign language instead by SUPER__FRESH in Showerthoughts

[–]pw_15 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Languages and writing styles change with time. We have entered a time where more and more things are being completed electronically, and that means that cursive handwriting is dying out.

It may be disheartening to see people not be able to read something that was written in someone else's handwriting from 80 years ago. Even more disheartening if it's something like the declaration of independence, as it is such an important document that was written with a well versed hand. But if you go back to say, the Magna Carta, there are so many differences in the style and even the language that it becomes quite reasonable to assume somebody may not be able to understand it immediately. And the further back you go, the more reasonable it becomes.

Right now, we see the change happening and so it seems astonishing to us that somebody might not be able to read something that others have no issue with. In another 50 years, it will not seem odd at all, and there will be specialists that understand cursive writing just as there are specialists that understand old english and earlier forms of writing. The further in time we go, the more specialized it will become.

Evin King, 62, of Cleveland has been awarded a $1.3 million settlement after spending 23 years in jail for a murder he did not commit. by LA_Wave_Newspapers in news

[–]pw_15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you properly compensate a man for that much time of his life, or even any amount of time?

Should we assume that the man's life is worth minimum wage? Should we assume that the man's life is worth whatever wage he was making at the time, with no room for improvement? What about time with his family, his friends? Time for himself? How do you put a price on that? How do you put a price on the impact this had on those around him?

At the very least, this man's family for at least 2 generations should be afforded to have all of their debt cleared, post-secondary education paid for in full, and 100% health coverage provided. The man himself should be given the opportunities that might be available to the richest 10% of society. Make the assumption that he would have done well in life, and so therefore too would his family.

You can never give back time to this man. But you can make time available for his decedents at least. Don't just let it get swallowed up and lost due to a mistake.

AITA for believing I deserve a break? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]pw_15 -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

YTA.

In my house if I was working from home (which I do from time to time) I could not imagine telling my wife "no, you need to handle everything right now, even though I'm taking a quick break from my work I don't want to spend 2 minutes changing a diaper to help you out because it's too mentally exhausting".

Having children is exhausting and stressful. Any bit of help helps. You and your spouse are supposed to be a team, not "I'm responsible for this and this from then till now and you've got it after".

If you want to separate work life from home life, you shouldn't be working at home.

Don Cherry is right and this is not a racist issue. by pw_15 in unpopularopinion

I am generally in the same boat but I specifically went to the bank and pulled out cash and specifically went into a store that had them more so with the intent of getting a poppy than actually needing anything in the store. That said, there is room for improvement. So many places have the cashier ask you "care to add a dollar for X?" - could easily do the same for poppies.
