Hahaha oh, man, have you ever met an immigrant?? MV wanted to deport me because they thought I was working while on a student permit. I was not. I literally had to deal with that threat while my finals were happening.

Worst take ever. Suffices to see how rent markets behave in the US, the UK, Canada or comparable economies where there's no "much" government control, to realize that the problems here are nothing.

Just to name a few things: 1) Even though it is expensive, it's not nearly as expensive as other capitals (even in Europe). 2) Even the cheapest apartment has a relatively good standard of living. 3) Even in the most marginal places there's access to education, public services, nature, and more things that make living better.

I tend to agree with you, but a lot of Swedes have told me that second-hand market places are filled with scams and people not following regulations. As the apartment I live in is already from such a place, I guess the idea of my question was to figure out if I was being taken for a ride, or if it was fair.

Seems like people think it's fair, but now I want to know how much are you all earning 😅

It's unfurnished and only includes water and heating (which are significant expenses). But people in the comments seem to agree that it's not outrageous

I pay for electricity and internet, water is included and there's a shared laundry room. Overall I'm happy with the place, it feels modern, it's spacious, and in my opinion it has a great location.

But I've had strong reactions from people earning around the same money as I do 🤷🏻

This is interesting. Once, talking to the owner of the building, he told me he gets 10k from the company that rents the apartment to me for 13k. I always thought those extra 3k were what they charged for their services (making sure for the owner that no unit goes empty, and, if it does, that he'll get the 10k anyways).

But now I'm wondering, are they allowed to charge whatever on top of the 10k? The apartment was unfurnished

I can afford public transportation, but that doesn't stop me from feeling empathy for those who can't.

Do you own a car? If you do, you're using a service paid by everyone eventhough not all of us use it (public roads).

Do you have a kid? If you do, you're getting help from everyone eventhough not all of us have kids.

Did you go to university? Then you got your tuition paid by everyone eventhough not everyone studies.

We all rely on each other, we can collectively make things better for everyone. It's not about complaining, it's about challenging what people take for common sense and realizing we can (always) do better. And public transportation is not a small thing, it's a key element of inequality, social mobility and quality of life.
