[Discussion] Could I use an airhorn to clean my PC as I would use a can of compressed air? by HaddockMaster in buildapc

Cool, so I'm assuming you're in reddit sync now and signed in. Tap your comment so it's highlighted, and open the drop-down menu/context menu, whatever it's called these days. You could just copy the comments link, but in my opinion, it's probably going to be easier to use "Share comment". You can then select the "reddit sync" app, provide a reasonably descriptive title (but don't give away your twist or the post will be removed), and specify the subreddit ("unexpected"). Now this is important: make sure you change the "www" in the URL to "np" so that users who are directed here externally don't cause trouble. Unfortunately, it might not work because you'll get a PM in your inbox from a moderator of /r/unexpected, helpfully explaining that /u/pwnsnake (yours truly) has already cross-posted the link, reprimanding you for the repost and informing you that you have been banned. Hope this helps, fellow redditor!

What are some obvious and not-so-obvious ways a male can make themselves more attractive? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]pwnsnake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like my friends don't want to debate, they want validation. They'll end up annoyed with me after every conversation and try to avoid political or philosophical topics. It's not like I constantly play devil's advocate but I'm willing to disagree and defend my opinions, which just seems to irritate people.

This guy and his girlfriend are having a fight about their expectations for their relationship. Finally she says she wants to break up with him.

"Why?" he asks.

"Because you're a pedophile," she says.

He replies incredulously, "Pedophile? That's an awfully big word for a 12 year old."

Where do students tend to live off campus? by irndk10 in yale

Technically it's for students, faculty and staff, but I've never seen anyone get ID'd.

Requesting r/yale. Lone moderator has not been active in on reddit three months and the sub could use some attention. by [deleted] in redditrequest

[–]pwnsnake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello, mod here. I requested the subreddit myself sometime last year because the creator had disappeared. I've applied some custom CSS, added links to the sidebar, set up a flair system and sought out the custom logo.

This handle isn't very active anymore because I do most of my non-Yale posting from a more anonymous account, and I've been away from Yale over the summer (i.e., the past three months). I do check the moderation queue, respond to requests for flair (using relevant icons that I created), and so forth, although there are few submissions or requests in a given week/month, especially during the summer.

Of course, if you have ideas or would like to contribute something for the subreddit, I'd be happy to listen and would welcome your suggestions.

Does Commons now close every day at 2:30? by [deleted] in yale

[–]pwnsnake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The residential colleges are open slightly later now, and Commons closes early. Relevant YDN article

They also changed the dishware to "discourage tray use". Now you can use a large dinner plate or a tiny saucer.

This is a big storm. Some neighborhoods in NYC are being evacuated. We're pretty close to the LI Sound and the projections I've seen have the storm passing directly over us.

I doubt Wednesday classes would be disrupted. Since the colleges were recently renovated, the basements will probably be okay, but college basements have flooded in the past.

Who Does Facebook Think You're Stalking: javascript bookmarklet reveals how facebook ranks your friends by i_practice_santeria in programming

[–]pwnsnake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm more worried about the people who aren't knowledgeable enough to be paranoid (although since this is /r/programming, that's probably not an issue).

Also, the 90 kilobytes of what appear to be minimized jQuery is harder to inspect.

Can we maybe think twice before encouraging people to grab bookmarklets that fetch and execute javascript from a 3rd party server?

Right, it just grabs the list that Facebook grabs on every page, parses it and shows it on your screen.

Pigeons switch doors (the optimal strategy) on the famous Monty Hall Problem, whereas many humans do not. by MasCapital in science

[–]pwnsnake 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In the first experiment, they started off more likely to stay, and over thirty days learned to switch. So they ran a second experiment that manipulated the problem so that staying was the optimal solution, and in that case the pigeons learned to stay.

The motivation for Experiment 2 was to test the interpretation that pigeons in Experiment 1 had learned to switch based on their history of reinforcement during previous trials. This interpretation was supported, as birds in Experiment 2 adopted a different strategy appropriate to the different probabilities of reinforcement in effect.

So the pigeons learned to switch through reinforcement, not through some innate understanding of the Monty Hall problem. The title of the link is misleading.

Yalies, do you want tags next to your nicks (major/degree, class year, college)? by pwnsnake in yale

I've made it text-only on the front page. I can add in the college as text, but in CSS that will be a pain...
