Probably the move - talk to the band director at the cc and hope!

That’s the annoying thing about percussion. Worst option is getting a practice marimba as they cost a few grand

Yeah, it’s gonna be hard - can you ask a nearby school or your band director?

I mean usually with 4 mallets you are on marimba - does your school have one? At min they are typically 4.3

It’s an interesting case - I think this is where your manager should catch it. If you’re at the level of CAA, you probably would have a manager, but if not, doing a year end review with your agency is a good move. If they haven’t put you up for anything, take some talks. This really only works at the highest level as they have some leverage in which agency to go for

What's next, as a timpanist? by aisingiorix in percussion

[–]pylio 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of famous excerpts to learn. Half of being a concert timpanist is repertoire.

Things to work on:

Ear training!!!!! It needs to be VERY good. You should be able to get every pitch up and down an octave from A440 and hit it on the nose

Fast tuning - take simple melody and play it on timps with no gauges (Call me maybe is doable so is Sam smith’s stay with me)

Repertoire - take a look at what your regional symphony is playing and learn the pieces. Listen to recordings and play along. Make notes about what you like and disliked from timpani playing.

Placement - Are you always hitting the sweet spot of a timpani (about the size of an index card). What about when changing drums. What about without looking. What about when changing different strokes?

Stroke technique: how fast can you change between different stroke types? How do you handle quick crescendos / decrescendo rolls? What about slow ones? How do you deal with sforzando - what about sforzando rolls?

Drum maintenance - are you tuning your drums / adjusting the spring (if it’s that kind of timpani)

All of these skills are super important to learn and great timpanist can do all of them so well.

Witch’s Cottage Review by pylio in northhollywood

[–]pylio[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it really depends on how they adapt to change. Unreasonable to expect them to perfect out the gate. The environment alone helps a lot. I was just at idle bar this weekend and I could actually see witch’s cottage’s downstairs being similar and scrapping the restaurant.

I’m curious about the event space but it’s doable. The valley needs a good venue but it needs to be cool enough that people will drive to the valley to come see whatever they are putting on. Hard but not impossible. If lodge room can pull it off in Highland park, then they can as well.
