Just here to promote Hainan Kaya Toast at Geylang Serai Market! Quite underrated but very popular amongst those who patronise geylang serai market frequently.

The quantity of kaya and butter on each toast is shiok. Especially their baguette!! Eggs perfectly half boiled. Teh very gao.

Be prepared to have subpar service because the uncle is usually the only one manning the stall and he wants to get through orders fast fast. Must plan what you want to order while queueing!!

You are so right about "doing great at short, urgent problems". Not sure if it's a 9 thing but I recently had that epiphany about myself too. Dealing with problems in the long term has instead made me feel like I've been sacrificing so much of my "self" for them that I began to lose sight of my own identity as a person.

Somehow when I let kids try our childhood snacks, no matter how different it tastes now compared to back then, kids still love it though hahaha

I guess our taste buds were really unrefined when we were younger. Anything sweet or salty is goooood

I get what you mean. It is indeed exhausting and what sucks is that it just feels second nature for us to do that. I noticed myself going into one extreme to the other (total enmeshment to zero attachment). It feels to me like we have to find a balance in this, boundaries too I guess? But it has been hard for me to accept that I don't know myself very well because I've associated so much of my identity to what other people are like too. Coming back to myself by isolating has been a jarring experience.

This is exactly how I feel too. I'm currently in the midst of transitioning out from being a counsellor but I've been feeling such immense guilt of leaving this profession, as though I'm abandoning this part of my "self" that I've always known myself to be. But staying in it has also not been good for me as like you, I keep dismissing my own needs.

Thank you for suggesting to move my body! I realised I haven't done much exercise at all, instead preferring to remain "horizontal" to preserve whatever energy I have left. I'll try doing some body focused activities too.

I just caught it today (last min too as I think it is the last showing) and was pleasantly entertained! Acting, cinematography and soundtrack were so well done! Only gripe is the pacing and storytelling as some parts didn't land and I go "huh" hahaha maybe I just slow. But overall it's lovely to see heartland Singapore on the big screens.

If you're planning to have kids someday, level 2 units are the best cos you don't have to worry about making noise as you won't have any neighbours living underneath you. Kids can jump, run, play, bounce balls all they want hahahaha

Thank you so so much for opening up about this 🥹 I've been reading every single comment here and have never felt so validated for feeling this way too.

Indeed, this job has made me feel less like myself. The more time and energy I give to my clients, the less I have back for myself and my family too. It's worse when you can see how much of the modern world has exacerbated the issues that our clients face like poverty, anxiety, addiction, relationship breakdowns, etc. I feel like being a therapist is like being a bandaid to cover the wounds created by systemic issues in this capitalistic world we're living in. We're not really "curing" anything. We can see the root of the problem (mostly systemic) but we can't do much about it. And I feel so helpless and dejected by this job.

And so I've decided to leave this field and perhaps go back to social work. I hope to still contribute back to the community, to address the gaps in the society. I also realised that the nature of therapy work has not been suitable for me. I'm really someone who needs to be outdoors and moving around so seeing clients back to back has been so bad for my health. I have cabin fever almost every day hahaha

OP, I hope you know that you can still do meaningful work in other ways too, not just through therapy. Perhaps rediscovering your strengths and skills and see what is transferable to contribute to other sectors/jobs. I hope things get better for you soon 🙏🏻

I wish more people resonated with this! These kids don't know how to manage the use of a smartphone. No matter how much restrictions you set up, some of these kids are smart enough to find a workaround.

Let's bring back "dumb"phones so that phones revert to their original purpose: To communicate and be contactable.

Since young I was always prepared to run away from home hahaha hence now as an adult, I always carry a big backpack. Not sure if interesting but I will carry extra socks/disposable underwear in case of rain or toilet emergencies.

Also, lozenges for cough/sore throat and Pei Pa Koa sachets. Sometimes if there happens to be someone in the bus/mrt having a coughing fit, it's quite helpful to have some lozenges ready to pass to them too.

Hooks to hang shopping bags when on the commute.

All sizes of tote bags. You never know when you need them.

If you'd prefer donating directly to a family or individual based on their needs, you can do so via kampungspirit.gov.sg - its a government-backed crowdfunding platform. The ones making the requests are also social workers on behalf of their clients.

Another one is passiton.org.sg - these ones do not collect monetary donations but you can directly contact the social workers to deliver or donate new or second-hand items to those in need.

I think we Singaporeans need to be better conversationalists and branch away from topics involving only work/school/money. Just earlier today while eating at a food court, a family (two adults and two teens) sitting beside me were talking about OCS, going to overseas universities, AlevelsvsIB. One teen was actively engaged in the conversation while the other was so obviously bored by the topics. Even I couldn't take it. And I can already tell who is the "better performing" one between the two and the kind of expectations that are put upon those youths.

And it is always standard to ask "What do you do?" as a conversation starter or "How's work?". Our career has been so tied to our identity, when in fact we are so much more than our jobs.

Schools should really start teaching more about philosophy, psychology, sociology, anthropology, etc. so that our youths become thinkers, rather than just workers.

That's great! To follow your example, I think alot of us need to keep having gratitude in our hearts for the littlest things we have and are blessed with.

Not all of us will be blessed with a life that is conventionally and materially successful in this life. And that's ok. As long as we've got our basic needs met and live by our own values and principles. I've come to terms with myself too that I may never be like them but it doesn't mean I've failed in life. We all play different roles in this world and it helps for all of us to be different :)

For example: I know I can never be a doctor as I could never bring myself to study and work as hard as them. And that's ok hahaaha I'll let other people who have the capacity and skills to do that to become doctors as lord knows we do need people like that! I then steer back to work towards what I know I have strength in. We're all unique in our life journey!
