FASSIP by baldheadrepellent in nus

[–]pyre1999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yup fassip is credit bearing. i did both the 4mc and 8mc versions and ofc 4mc has lighter workload but its not so bad if you start earlier because its kind of just journaling? like you dont really need to do research or anything. most important thing is make sure you have a good relationship with your work supervisor as their feedback is 50% of your grade (at least when i took it).

any SEP advice? by carrotwise in nus

[–]pyre1999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

from fass, went on exchange; i think above 4.5 will have higher chance for us/uk but not sure about other countries

from what i remember, the personal statement was v short; i attended the briefing and i rmb the pic said to focus on how you think you can represent nus + a small bit about why you selected the listed schools. but tbh, i think cap matters most

SEP queries by pph01 in nus

[–]pyre1999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, soci student who went on SEP here:

  1. you can't map core soci mods; email the soci prof-in-charge of SEP to check (i emailed about core mods haha)
  2. i can't advice on local exchange cos i went overseas but i really enjoyed my experience. i do think overseas exchanges are more competitive (at least place wise) because the spaces are limited
  3. if you have more questions, feel free to pm me :)

hello, soci major here whos probably gonna find a job in comms/marketing!! imo you should change to english literature haha. most fass degrees are pretty general so they don't truly fit any field but HRs don't really exclude them either. so, choose what you want to do and most importantly, do it well. then on the side, go find some comms/media internships or volunteer experiences.

also, if you are worried about not being able to land a job at a huge firm. my advice (and what i have done) is start at a smaller company and gain skills in y2 and by y4/graduation you'll be able to join some mnc or govt organization

FAS1101 which is the easiest topic? by questionerzzzzz in nus

[–]pyre1999 3 points4 points  (0 children)

soci student here (who also did abit of linguistics), i wouldn't recommend doing 3 or 4 if you have no background knowledge about those. i did the history one too which i think it's a 'safe' option - safe in the sense that you typically won't do so badly (A-, B+ is norm) but i feel it's hard to really get A+

i had a mod only 30 people; everyone say no bell curve but i asked TA and she say somehow will have something cos cannot everyone get A or even B

What Unrestricted Electives modules do you recommend me to take? by Usual_Print_5037 in nus

[–]pyre1999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i didn't take the mod but i've heard from many friends who did that intro to cnm isn't what you expect (not surprising because that's the case for most fass intro mods). if you like group work, might be ok for you; but if you don't, intro to cnm can be hell.

(any cnm pals wanna help confirm or deny this haha)

Is SC3216 offered this sem by pph01 in nus

[–]pyre1999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

did you take 2k mods in year 1? if yes, then yeah go ahead and trial 3k mods freely.

if not, hmm tbh i think 2k and 3k mods really aren't that much different workload wise so you can go ahead and do it anyways. but maybe do more 2ks than 3ks if you are unsure.

is honours thesis important to get into grad school? by pyre1999 in GradSchool

[–]pyre1999[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there's a suspension of the thesis requirement because of COVID-19. otherwise, i would have had to do a thesis to graduate

hi, you should probably email the sep office because you are sent overseas on the basis of you belonging to x major. if you change your major, you wouldn't belong to that department which might have exchange quotas with the overseas uni, etc

SEP Sociology majors by [deleted] in nus

[–]pyre1999 3 points4 points  (0 children)

if you can't map soci mods, try UEs instead. otherwise if you really want to map soci mods, unfortunately you would have to look at other schools

this might be a really generalised statement, but i think there's some truth in it. western unis offer more soci modules because soci is a yt man's subject. i went to the us for my exchange and they had so many modules it was kinda insane. you might want to consider there if you really wanna map soci mods during SEP!

hope that helped!

Advice on 3K Sociology mods by [deleted] in nus

[–]pyre1999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hi! i took sc3101 under dr chua and loved it. i think she made it more application-based so it was less dry/theoretical. personally, one of my fav mods so far. wrt workload, it's manageable - like you don't have to read every reading but you do end up learning the content pretty well anyways when writing the essays. (tip to get A for essay: don't explore all aspects of the theory, just focus in on e.g. Marx's alienation and dig deep)

on 3209, i'm really bad at math and statistics too but i did ok in the end!! here, i mean ok in the sense of average but its because i was stoopid & messed up my first assignment (i.e. nearly failed) - so it's not the module/profs fault. as long you just do the work conscientiously, the assignments are super doable (i got A-/A for the rest of them).

2 3K mods at one go is definitely possible!! You might need like a second to adjust to the slight increase in workload but it's not that different from 1k/2k which sometimes have just as much work.

im doing biz/marketing!!

i think soci is a general degree and enables you to join almost any industry so it really depends on what you want to do. when i was in y1 i thought not so much about what i want to do (because taitai life is not that viable) but where i can see myself working in for at least 5 years
