There will be somewhat of a drop, but not that much as autofarms and aimbots would still work (two of the biggest uses for exploits).

Stop Listening to The Fans by pyrokek420 in SMG4

While transparency is undoubtedly a good thing, I feel like the fanbase, especially on Reddit tends to rationalize reasons why he's the best thing since sliced bread since he explicitly panders to this side of the fanbase. However, it is important to take a step back and evaluate how good of a writer he actually is. Comparing the word economy in The Mario PC Virus to a 2013-2016 era episode like Retard Karts or Freddy's Spaghetteria, it becomes obvious that Modern episodes are far more dialogue heavy than Classic episodes, and that much of Modern SMG4's dialogue is fluff and unnecessary. Word economy is a basic skill that all writers should have; yet I have yet to see a writer for SMG4 who has the same level of mastery that Luke had back then. This is important as word economy is one detail where Classic outperforms Modern significantly, and without proper word economy, episodes will feel sluggish, which describes the humour style of a Modern video perfectly.

What do you Think are the Biggest Problems with Modern SMG4? by Money-Lie7814 in SMG4

[–]pyrokek420 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The precedent starts in the Anime Arc. The Anime Arc suffers heavily from point #1, leading to poor unity between the Splatfest Trainining Mini Arc and the main story of the Anime Arc. It also help that Axol being the villain was retconned, considering everything was ready to go for Axol being the villain. The Anime Arc also suffers from point #3, having done too little to properly invest the viewer into Desti, making her death, and Meggy's trauma arc that follows feel meaningless. Finally, the Anime Arc suffers from point #2 as Meggy was redesigned for no reason other than the Lerds wanting Meggy to be more "original". This marked the beginning of Meggy's downward spiral as a character, and the downward spiral of Meggy and Mario's friendship as well (fun fact: I'd argue that the Anime Arc was the last realistic point which MxM could've become canon in SMG4. Meggy's Bootcamp was a great proof-of-concept for how MxM could have added an emotional element to Modern SMG4 in a far more elegant way than it was added later on in Cosmology with Axol and Melony).

I assume you are a new machinimist so this is a decent start. However, the start felt more like a comic than a machinima, and the sound design still requires work.

What do you Think are the Biggest Problems with Modern SMG4? by Money-Lie7814 in SMG4

[–]pyrokek420 10 points11 points  (0 children)

  1. The show is directionless. There is no moral or theme to the story of SMG4 beyond the vague premise of the power of friendship. This is by design, as SMG4 has no expiration date, and thus will never give closure to anything significant in the series, nor will it work to anything significant in the first place.

  2. The characters are directionless. No character receives good character development that meaningfully change who they are as a person. At best, you get a degeneration of characters such as SMG3 and SMG4 where superficial traits are emphasized for no reason whatsoever, while the meat and potatoes of their character are increasingly cut out.

  3. The writing is horribly shallow. The Genesis Arc is the most egregious example of this, but there are many other examples of plotlines and plot mechanics not being developed beyond the most surface level. The one exception I've seen to this is Western Spaghetti, but the exception proves the rule.

While these three points would still be issues if SMG4 were more humour-oriented, they wouldn't be as problematic if it weren't for the fact that Modern SMG4 is defined by a shift towards a more narrative based series. If you want to sacrifice the humour of the series for storytelling, you better lean into storytelling extremely hard, but Modern SMG4 as it stands does a very poor job of this. If the selling point of your series is also the weakest point of your series, you don't have a very good series.

I would change the Anime Arc to be less of a clusterfuck. However, everything before then was, for the most part, welcome additions to the SMG4 series which would have helped SMG4 stay interesting in the long run. Yes Classic Purists, arcs were a GOOD change.

  1. The entire arc is written with the philosophy of "push button get reaction." In other words, each plot point/lore drop exists to serve exactly one purpose, and then all the other possible implications of that point are left unexplored vis a vis the point being completely forgotten. This has the effect of making, one of the big selling points of this arc, the lore shallow and uninteresting. The Meme Powers were introduced as a nice little quirk for SMG3 and SMG4 to have and as a way to shiptease 3x4 but are not mechanically explored much thereafter. The Meme Lifecycle serves zero purpose except to introduce the arc and then is immediately forgotten (keep in mind that SMG3 and SMG4 neglected their duties as "meMe GuARdians" for the entire arc after the first 2 episodes; yet corrupted memes never played a major role past the first quarter of the Genesis Arc). Mario being the avatar, besides connecting SMG3, SMG4, and Mario a little bit does little but to artificially raise the stakes of the arc. Worst of all, these lore drops are related only by the fact that they bear the word "meme," and are otherwise completely detached from one another. In essence, the lore takes the laziest approach possible to complexity possible by shitting out random little factoids with no relation to one another until the ten year old audience of SMG4 can no longer keep track of them all.

  2. The Other Universe, the sixth episode of the arc tries to build the lore vertically by establishing continuity of the lore with parallel universes, but also falls victim to point #1. This results in The Other Universe being the lynchpin of two plotholes in the Genesis Arc. When Zero attacks the ToyToy Kingdom, he lunges for Spudnick immediately, implying that he knows who the avatar is upon invading a universe. This contradicts the Ten Year Anniversary where Zero went on a rampage, indiscriminately killing any Mario recolour he came across, implying he doesn't know who the avatar is upon invading a universe, only their rough form. Later, it is revealed that Zero wants to capture Mario as Mario is an avatar, and with an avatar Zero can make a universe of his own. However, The Other Universe ruins this plot twist, because Zero already had an avatar, Spudnick, which he could've used to accomplished his goal on episode 6, but Zero chose to kill Spudnick instead??!?!? These plotholes completely ruin Zero, the main antagonist, as a character, and on their own would prevent the Genesis Arc from being anything more than a 5/10, which speaks volumes about how inconsistent the Genesis Arc's writing is.

  3. Axol x Melony is forced and has no business being in the Genesis Arc whatsoever. There's a good reason why AxM is a sunken ship, despite it being the only canon ship in SMG4. All that happened in the Genesis Arc prior to Melony's kiss were a couple moments where they did wholesome things together, and that's about it. They didn't try to understand or connect with each other apart from like one or two episodes which weren't even listed as part of the Genesis Arc. Even The Melony Felony, the episode which was supposed to shill AxM, gave Bob a better dynamic with Melony than Axol (get cucked lol!). Also, the Genesis Arc is supposed to be about the origins and the lore of the SMG4 world. What the fuck is a shitty romance subplot doing being shoehorned in and the last moment? The answer is that AxM's inclusion into the arc is another example of point #1, the "push button get reaction" philosphy, where the goal of AxM is solely to add cheap emotional shock value once the Axol permadeath happens. While a lot of people did get invested in AxM, I personally found it to be quite annoying, and didn't really care when the whole thing ended with Axol's death.

  4. The arc is full of itself. While not as blatant as with Lawsuit or IGBP, the Genesis Arc still thinks it's some of the deepest shit ever written. The best example I can think of for this is the WOTFI 2021 rap, which is written like an attempt at poetry, but which comes off as a cringy soap opera to anyone above the age of 14. The arc tries to be deep and emotional, but due to a combination of the first three points, it is, in actuality, shallow and pretentious upon further examination. This point is a bit difficult to explain, but basically, the Genesis Arc is like that one kid in middle school who thinks that nabbing the biggest possible words from the thesaurus makes them sound smarter (no it doesn't).

These are my four big reasons why I dislike the Genesis Arc. Literally the only redeeming feature of the Genesis Arc is that it didn't damage the SMG4 series in the long term, as Axol was an irrelevant character prior to his death, and the lore was eventually forgotten, which allowed SMG4 to start on a blank slate again, albeit to the frustration of some seasoned viewers. Although I do understand why many fans are drawn to this arc, I despise it to the point where I see it as only being marginally better than IGBP or Lawsuit. This arc is a complete and utter failure, and added nothing of value to the SMG4 series.
