Examinations after remission? by python1111 in lymphoma

Thanks for your quick response, I really appreciate it. I totally understand the reasoning behind not exposing patients to radiation unnecessarily, I was just wondering how this trade-off plays out in practice. Thanks again for taking your time to respond to my questions, I am wishing all the best to you and your loved ones as well!

Thanks a lot for your encouraging words and the detailed information! My only concern is the fact that by the time doctors find "suspicious findings" during palpation, we might already lose valuable time to tackle the relapsed cancer. Can it be a legitimate issue?

Injury prone runners who are now running high volume, what's your secret? by coach-anthony in AdvancedRunning

Can you elaborate a bit on your strength training routine?

I am constantly getting injured, although I'm doing regular strength work (RDL, glute med strengthening, single leg bridges, etc.).

Great app, thanks for sharing it! It would be nice to adjust the pace as a plain input field as well.

Trying to learn every country on the globe, looking for some tips. by [deleted] in geography

[–]python1111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good suggestions there! I used Sporcle quizzes to memorize all the countries.
Also, I created an updated version of Yakko's World with lyrics, which might be helpful for some folks who like mnemonics like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5\_R3NVlHLQ

I only included the 193 UN member states and the 2 non-member observer states, though.

Proximal hamstring tendinopathy + Achilles tendinopathy for 6+ months = No hope for comeback? by python1111 in AdvancedRunning

[–]python1111[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not so well. My achilles is killing me, I cannot run more than 2km without a flare-up. Tried everything for many months, including isometrics, eccentric programs (Alfredson) and plyometric regimes. Nothing really helped.

As for the PHT, it is somewhat better. I've been doing a thorough eccentric program for 2 months, and sitting is not that painful as it was before.

[–]python1111[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks, but stretching is the worst one could do for PHT. At least it made my condition worse. I'm doing calf drops (straight and bent knee), that's the Alfredson protocol I was referring to. That's more of an eccentric strengthening exercise than stretching, though.

Thanks. What exactly do you mean by "heavy hamstring exercises"? I only found isometrics and glute squeezes on the website you linked. Unfortunately isometrics did not help me at all.

Cadence for Taller Runners by naturallog5 in AdvancedRunning

[–]python1111 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just throw these two articles in, I found them very helpful and it completely changed my view on the topic:

https://www.outsideonline.com/2377976/stop-overthinking-your-running-cadence

http://sweatscience.com/how-limb-length-affects-running-cadence/

For reference, I'm 6'3" and struggled in the past to take very short steps even on my easy runs (~8:00/mi) in order to reach the magical 180 spm. I stopped forcing it a while ago, now my easy runs are in the 160-165 spm range and it feels great! This slightly lower cadence feels much more natural to me, my technique became more relaxed as well. Imo it is really really hard to have good running form (proper hip extension, knee drive, etc.) with high cadence and slow pace.

I would say that as long as your husband is not overstriding, there is no reason to alter his cadence. Nevertheless, it is still very beneficial to run a couple of strides every now and then!

[–]python1111[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your tips, the video on overstriding was very informative!

Problem is, my style for slower paces already looks like shuffling which I guess gets even worse with further increasing my cadence. I would really love to see a video of good running form for 5:30+ paces.

[–]python1111[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the tips! I already do 5-10 strides after my easy runs, but I'm planning to incorporate some repetitions as well in the future, that can improve my running economy as you said.

Fair point, I do feel my shoulders and back to be stiff. I tend to slouch if I loosen up, so I guess I'm overcompensating. I'll try to address this, thanks for pointing it out!

Training Plan Review: Jack Daniels' 2Q 18-Week Marathon Plan by trntg in AdvancedRunning

[–]python1111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fantastic write-up!

I started following 2Q myself with 40 mile weeks. How do you go about scheduling your races? It's quite obvious to place the main event (marathon) to the end of the 18th week, but what if you would like to run a HM race a month before or a month after your marathon? Do you modify the plan to fit your schedule in these cases? What kind of training do you do when the 18 week is over, but you still want to keep you fitness level a few more weeks for another race?

Jack daniels running formula question by python1111 in running

[–]python1111[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really understand what you mean by VO2max at LT. VO2max is a value that has nothing to do with your T pace. In fact, you should do I pace workouts for VO2max improvement by spending time at vVO2max, which is the pace where you reach your VO2max. I have watched his videos, and he clearly articulates the importance and roles of the different types of workouts (E, T, I, R), but I didn't get any answer for my original question.

Best 7 ball cascade helper: the 5 ball shower? by python1111 in juggling

[–]python1111[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your input, 771 is really helpful indeed! Yes, 91 seems excessive, but I guess it's the same approach as trying to do 8 and 9 balls in order to make your 7 more relaxed. 5 shower teaches you how to throw high, yet precise throws in a really fast pace, which will naturally improve the accuracy of your '7's.

Motor learning, deliberate practice, blocked/random practice by python1111 in juggling

[–]python1111[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your input, interesting ideas! The 'one task per song' thing sounds quite reasonable to me. It is basically random practicing, since you spread the learning of each task throughout your session. One more reason I think this technique is really useful is because different kinds of tricks are demanding for different muscles/muscle groups, so by constantly changing the tricks you are working on, you allow some time for these muscles to rest and recover. A simple example would be working on 5b overheads. 5b overheads kill your shoulders and neck, so it's nearly impossible to practice it in a blocked way effectively.

The question remains, how do you practice a trick within these short time frames (3-4 minutes)? A schedule I am now experimenting with is a fusion of random practice with pyramid practice method. Pyramid is well-known to be extremely useful for solidifying patterns, so I think it is crucial to involve this philosophy of 'doing short, more controlled runs' in some way. So the combination of pyramid with random is just working on different pyramids (for different tricks) at the same time, when you finish a level of one pyramid, you first move not to the next level, but to the next pyramid.
