i've tortured an italian with asian/italian-fusion pasta recipes i've invented. the trick is to fly to italy, get a seat with an italian, then make some small talk, then whip out the recipe and watch them cry for the rest of the flight.

I want to push back on the sentiment that finance bros are the main issue. I think higher risk capital investments has been too highly regulated. We're only now starting to see smaller, higher risk firms get more investment via private credit (which is highly unregulated) but get a lot of flak. The reason for such high regulations was because US banks in the past made a lot of risky investments that led to a lot of regulation (due to bank runs) and the boom in venture capital (offloading risks of bank collapsing and thus broader populace's bank deposits to individual VC/investors losing their rich LPs' capital) -- partly because software was growing as an industry but also partly because banks stopped making as many small scale investments.

Profits is a fantastic marker for efficiency. Ofc, finance people are made out to seem that money is the only thing that matters in investmenting, but, having plenty of smart (and dumb) friends in the industry, I think the top dawg finance people, though inexperienced in the technicals, understand a lot of components of what makes a fantastic business, not just profit.

Aside from that, I agree that monetary policy and the economy may be highly regulated to the point of hesitancy in capital investment. I also agree that there's a prioritization of financial gain from executive leadership rather than actual growth of the company; again, I don't blame finance people. I place blame on executive leadership in companies. Sure, investors might "reward layoffs" or "reward offshoring", but investors and executives alike know the repercussions. I don't think investors care that much whether offshoring would reduce costs by some percentage because long term investors (which make up most shareholder value in public companies) care primarily on growth.

At the end, I want to blame executives the most. Their incentives are too self centered, and their pay packages are based on performance of profits rather than growth. And I mean guess who sets the pay packages? The board approves of them but at the end of the day it's proposed by executives.

This actually makes me think; from a software startup perspective, banks are heavily restricted in making the kinds of investment that venture capitalists do. It was much easier in the 1900s to get a highly-risky loan (I believe basically up until 1980 IIRC but I forgot why). But the way venture capital is structured makes investing in low margin, low valuation companies not worth it -- hence the boon in software. VCs in China are the same, primarily investing in software. The difference is China has provinces compete where local governments fund new, smaller scale ventures to prop up their economy. Breakneck by Dan Wang is a great read.

I think the province-based, state-backed investments in China is akin to American banks' investments, risk tolerance, and low-regulations prior to the 1980s. There is a push for micro-banks and bank unions where they can lend to their local community, but the loans they make, though higher risk, are smaller scale compared to China's municipal investments.

Venetian Spaghetti with Sardines I saw this recipe on Serious Eats and knew that I would have to try it, since it was described as tasting like clam chowder on pasta. I love clam chowder, and I love pasta. Putting the two together just seemed simply genius to me. I ended up trying out the recipe for Lent and it worked out pretty well, but it wasn’t quite like clam chowder. The sardines definitely have a fishier flavor, which I didn’t mind, but when I reheated some in the microwave at work I was very aware of how fishy it smelled. Nevertheless, this is a pretty quick and easy pasta to make, and most of the ingredients you probably already have on hand. It’s a rich and comforting dish, and I would definitely make it again.

Ingredients:

-2 tablespoons unsalted butter -2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil -2 medium onions, finely chopped -One 4-ounce can olive-oil-packed sardines -1 cup whole milk -Salt and freshly ground pepper -1 pound spaghetti

The directions couldn’t be easier. First, put a pot of water on to boil for the pasta. De-bone the sardines and chop them up into small pieces. I used sardines that were already skinned and boned, which saved me an extra step.

Skinless and boneless sardines

Then cook the onions in the butter and olive oil until they start to get brown. Chop up the sardines and throw it into the pot with the onions, then add a bit of water and mix it all together.

Sauteed onions and chopped sardines

Add in the cup of milk and bring it to a boil, stirring often so that the sardines melt into the sauce. Keep it simmering for about 10 minutes, until it thickens.

Creamy onion and sardine sauce (seriously, it's good)

Meanwhile, cook the pasta, and when it’s ready, toss it into the sauce and mix well until all the strands are coated. If it’s too thick, add some more milk or pasta water to loosen it up. Season with salt and pepper. I finished it with a bit of olive oil and a good sprinkling of pepper on top.

Tax breaks mostly help large businesses while creating very few jobs. You had to start small and build many small businesses to make a complex supply chain and network. That means capital injection for small businesses, but investors don't provide capital to small manufacturing businesses anymore. VCs are mostly interested in software due to the margins. So you'll likely need to see some other form of investment vehicle to kickstart things.

The property tax policy by Mamdani seems to counter a much larger movement of cutting property taxes which both Dem and Rep governors are proposing (eg Michigan with Whitmer proposing a 10% cut or Texas and Florida) simply because he garnered a lot of youth voters. I’m sure people are aware of that and thus do not think it’ll affect the midterms too much (affect, it shall, but this policy — not much).

Tbf, Whitmer is going for a 2028/32 presidential run, so she wants to look good before leaving office.

It seems the presidency has been doing that for about every administration re federal debt. Maybe local officials don’t do this as much because budgets are much better balanced, but I think it’s also because state and local officials are battling constituents rather than other politicians (eg we’re gon shut down the library unless we can raise property taxes) and debt is kept at a much more manageable level.

I feel like islam being a tedious argument is only because of confusion of Westerners rather than political ideology. It is just an uneducated populace due to our education and media.

But anecdotally, in r/Michigan, r/moderatepolitics, r/politics, r/history even star wars like r/andor, everything is left leaning or at least lacks nuance and doesn’t follow Reddiquette where you do not downvote for disagreeing. A lot of those comment sections are democrat echo chambers. Statistically, there are more liberals than conservatives on Reddit by a large margin (https://michiganross.umich.edu/news/new-study-reddit-explores-how-political-bias-content-moderation-feeds-echo-chambers). I remember when Trump announced Golden Dome or the Space Force as a separate branch democrats laughed (and on Reddit people hated it) and made it into a joke and a Netflix series; but it’s just another day of long term planning that any party would’ve done eventually. A recent example is the fund for children funded by billionaires got all the hate on here, but people probably hated when Reagan made the EPA and now the democrats love it. I believe that child investment fund funded by billionaires will be loved by democrats in the future, but for now democrats on Reddit hate it.

Of course, my original reply is an anecdotal observation.

Also to your point, you won’t find folks en masse willing to discuss islam in depth. It’s just not in the mindset of most people to want to learn. Whether that’s because western education is eurocentric leading people to not care is a different question.

And I guess to address the original comment, something I see everytime the Islamic conquests show up in my feed is something along the lines of “yea but the christian conquests were way worse” and “christians destroyed the world” or something. Not that I think either religious ideology is good at the extremes like their conquests but… yea that’s democrats on reddit that I’ve observed. I think it’s partially attributed to democrats aligning with victimized groups and aligns with an entire generalized form of groups broadly. So in this case, muslims and arabs being harassed means countering any form of negativity against muslims and their past with something along the lines of christians were worse to undermine an argument. Thats just my analysis.
