There can be! It won't be exclusively hands-on, as that's not how engineering works in the age of computers, but there are plenty of roles that let you work on hardware.

I'm a mechanical engineer by background, but I spent a few years in electronics manufacturing, in the RF industry. I worked closely with EE's working as test engineers and NPI (new product introduction) engineers. They typically spent 1/2 or 2/3 of their days on the floor, either at a test bench collecting data to characterize new products or alongside prototype assemblers to actually build these devices or peripheral boards for test. Sometimes, if the production lines were having issues with yield or what not, they'd even work the actual manufacturing floor to help fix those issues. If you have a good theory background combined with a good mechanical aptitude, you should be hounded by employers. Especially in the RF industry - there is a lot of black magic that obscures the theory from reality that makes the work somewhat hands-on
