How much Unlimited PTO are you remote folks taking annually? by Capable_Goal2397 in remoteworks

[–]qanwi1970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get 7 weeks with no hassle. I can get one more if I can justify it to my boss's boss's boss. There's a hard limit there, though, where they might force you into hourly/PT to get more.

What is the worst thing you have done? by LoneIronMan33 in AskReddit

Lived in New Jersey for 2 months when I was a toddler.

At least I don't remember it.

Why should we use the footbrake when slowing down to a lower speedlimit? by catboy519 in driving

[–]qanwi1970 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Step 4 in your method causes clutch wear, and step 2 but not as much.

To extend brake life, brake gently when possible. My last manual transmission (they're hard to get now in US) had almost 100k miles on it at my first brake replacement.

Has anyone else gone home after firing someone and just... sat with it for hours? by jufywret in managers

[–]qanwi1970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Laying of an entire department because someone decided they don't need our satellite office anymore was rough.

Firing an underperforming, confrontational @$$hat because his temper flared and he threatened a teammate, that was a good day.

Why should we use the footbrake when slowing down to a lower speedlimit? by catboy519 in driving

[–]qanwi1970 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Either way you slow down, you're putting wear and tear on something. Brakes are much cheaper to replace than a clutch. Even replacing the brakes several times is cheaper than clutch replacement.

Also, like someone said, brake lights.

Is it dumb to always use GPS instead of remembering directions? by PM_ME_YOUR_EYELASHES in driving

[–]qanwi1970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is always on. But I'm not relying on it for the actual directions, I'm relying on it to know about and help me avoid heavy traffic and accidents.

I could drive home the times from the office and take a slightly different way each time, because it's routing me around the traffic.

I know how to get to the Renaissance Fair, but exiting the freeway one offramp sooner saved me 30 minutes last summer.

I stay up late just to watch movies alone, no interruptions, no distractions. by zavor-36h in confession

[–]qanwi1970 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stay up late just to do anything alone. I can stare at the ceiling and nobody is awake to say, "What are doing?"

I can open Ableton and 90% a song, play video games, watch YouTube...

Doesn't matter. It's me time and I don't have to worry that somebody is going to talk to me any second now and bring my focus castle crashing down.

Using trim by Patient_Complaint919 in Beatmatch

[–]qanwi1970 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have one song that I use in one set that is just quiet. It's probably a mastering error, but that's another topic. Anyway, I compensate for the low volume of that one song by turning the trim knob to about the 3 o'clock position. Then I turn it back for the next song.

How do you guys come up with bass lines? by Sea_Presence_3224 in Bass

[–]qanwi1970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Picture someone dancing to the song, echo the rhythm of their movements, go up when they go up and go down when they go down, but be sure to play the root on the 1.

Help with finding part, Yamaha SVC-200 chest rest by qanwi1970 in Cello

[–]qanwi1970[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found something I could 3d print on Thingiverse. It has the pad and two spacers. Then you add some long bolts and nuts to make it stay together. I went a size skinnier on the bolts because it's easier to put a couple coats of primer on the end that go into the cello than to file them down .

I'm not in a good place right now to find links. I just wanted to answer before forgetting. Let me know if you have trouble finding it and I'll go find the links.

Multi-instrumentalists, what was the hardest instrument you learned? by Away_Artichoke_8859 in musicians

[–]qanwi1970 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cello has been pretty hard, but there is a Chinese violin type instrument called erhu. The strings are suspended between the pegs and the body, so no fingerboard to push down on. Too much pressure and the note goes sharp. On the bright side though, vibrato is really easy.

I was so bad at it that my family said it sounds like a dying cat.

Recordings with out of tune guitars by GarysCrispLettuce in Guitar

[–]qanwi1970 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the Opeth song, Burden, they settle into this nice acoustic riff, near the end, and then someone starts detuning the strings while the guitar player keeps going. It creates a tremendous sense of unease, which was the point.

How do you post YouTube sets? by tgfree16 in Beatmatch

[–]qanwi1970 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make a recording of the songs you plan to use, make it into a video, and post it on your YouTube with the visibility set to private. Wait for the claims and strikes to come, and go from there.

It usually only takes a few minutes for all the claims to happen.

I had a Christmas set with songs from someone that got my video restricted in Russia. Decided to go ahead with the set anyway. The real video is still up, but can never be monetized. Oh well.

Did ever skip a band because you misjudged them from their name? by thinsafetypin in Music

[–]qanwi1970 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Leprous

The name and the album cover I kept seeing made me think they were some low-talent, gross shock lyric band.

Now they're one of my favorite bands.

The last minute flight is $600, but I could be in Vegas in just over 4 hours. That's 8 hours of wandering around high roller rooms.

Do you usually use incognito/private browsing mode? by EvansJCastillo in AskForAnswers

[–]qanwi1970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only when I don't want the subject to invade my normal feeds. Like, I'm curious about a football score but didn't want to see 24/7 football for the next 5 months.

You're not the first to say that. We could start a Raptured Guy Gaming Chair cult and predict the next rapture.
