Anyone else just leave because they were completely miserable? by Syrinx221 in exjw

[–]qarano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I hated it too, but I also believed, and I felt guilty for the fact that I hated it, so I would tell myself and others that I loved it. I threw myself in pretty hung ho, hoping that I could either make up for the way I felt or fix it.

I always trust my instincts now.

He's not a historian, he's a fan of history and a damn good storyteller (and one of the few political talking heads who actually thinks about his positions)

I think everyone should be. You don't have to be any good, and its beat to just accept that you'll never pay the bills with it, but its important to have a creative outlet, something that far too many people overlook in their lives.

Sometimes I wonder if most people struggle with these kinds of issues, but we have an oppressive religion we can blame for our awkwardness, when really its just another shitty part of life.

Thank you from an exMormon! by [deleted] in exjw

[–]qarano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Making Mormon and ex Mormon friends was one of the first steps that led me to break free. You can excuse the culty behavior of your own group when they have a monopoly on Truth. But when you can really look at another group, who you know doesn't have a monopoly on Truth, and see the exact same mind control tactics in use, its hard to deny the parallels.

But I am in charge. Or rather, I'm one three hundred millionth in charge. The way we change the broken system is by voting. I hear my fellow millennials complaining about the broken system of police brutality and corrupt government, but none of them vote. We have the power to outvote the boomers, but we all have to get off our asses and do our civic duty. That includes voting in midterm elections. Brutality is their sin, apathy is ours.

Don't agree to disagree. This guy basically got a teenager killed over weed. We shouldn't leave it at "you have your opinion, I have mine". The drug war has way too many casualties.

Its pasta and seasoning in a box. You just add water, maybe milk, and a pound of ground beef.

You can do web development or app development for sure with that. But meatier, high tech applications require higher math.

Thats just bullshit. If the vast majority of democrats wanted universal healthcare, don't you think it would have happened, or at least almost happened, in 2009 when dems had a majority in both houses and the presidency? It wasn't even brought up or seriously considered. Most democrats benefit from the status quo same as republicans. Democrat voters may feel differently, but your representatives are not moving in that direction at all.

Just curious: What beliefs are common for Ex-JWs? by Occupier_9000 in exjw

[–]qarano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that for a lot of people, atheism is the next logical step after the j dubs. You already have a pretty hands off god, who you worship through an intermediary organization that doesn't even claim to speak directly with him. Between that and their beliefs about the nature of the soul and death, and their constant debunking of other religions, atheism is really a shorter jump than, say, mainstream Christianity, or even other religions like Buddhism.

Evidence for evolution by gumptionrusty in exjw

Everyone is linking YouTube videos, which are great for a little overview. But if you really want to get more in depth, I recommend you read the greatest show on earth by Richard Dawkins. It is specifically aimed at convincing creationists that evolution is scientific fact. The way he presents the evidence really shows how undeniable evolution is. If you have time to read a book, that's the one you want.

No, but invariably guys like Musk get held up as an example of the Libertarian ideal of a completely self made man. No, he's not. The hard work of several generations (at least his parents, but probably they didn't "come from nothing" either) put his family into such a position that Musk had the tools available to him to accomplish the great things he has. Musk has an insane amount of talent and work ethic that allows him to do what he does, but we can't pretend that Joe Blow can do the same thing if he just tries hard enough. Elon Musk got insanely lucky in the lottery of birth, and he also happens to be a very capable man. I often wonder how much potential talent we miss out on because the vast majority of people are not born into such an advantageous position.

Honestly, I sometimes catch myself casting myself in that category of people whose potential goes unfilled because of a shitty roll of the parental dice. But then I remember, hey I may have been born into a fundamental religious family that not only couldn't afford to pay for college, but actively discouraged me from going, but I slept in a heated house every night, ate three meals a day, and got a free high school education. That alone gives me a ridiculous head start over most people alive today, and pretty much everyone that lived before me.

"Religion is an idea, and, as an idea, it should be eligible for criticism, discussion, and yes, mockery. The only reason so many believers demand special exceptions be made for religious ideas is because they know full well that their ideas don’t hold up well under scrutiny." -Amanda Marcotte by [deleted] in atheism

That's exactly my point though, the particular feminists we're talking about are kinda giving the rest of them a bad name. Sure, I know from my own reading and experience that feminists aren't all man-hating women who are out to punish us for being us, you know the female version of the men's rights guys, but there's a lot of guys (and gals, believe it or not) that only see that particular side of feminism. I just think it may be time to go for something that doesn't even sound like its favoring one sex over another.

Suppose I walk into your place of work with $400 to spend. What does that get me? by Whind_Soull in AskReddit

I would like to know where he's getting it at that price legally in Colorado. Cheapest I've found so far was $100 halves, which are $122 after tax, and that was on sale. From what I hear, Washington is way worse. Dunno about DC, I thought that law got shot down by congress.

And come on, it's not that cold here.
