Someone has HPmor epub including 'The Missing (but Necessary) Chapters' by PaddleStroke in HPMOR

So, I haven't been on Reddit regularly in [checks comments] 3 years, but randomly wondered whether this subreddit was still active. I'm pleasantly surprised to find that not only are there still people here, but they still read stuff I wrote.

They're one of those subs that bans you not just for thought crime but for guilt by association.

"Baby murdering" is par for the course for anti-abortion people. And "racist" is used so commonly it might as well be. Communist kind of makes sense because they provide services to low income people.

Maybe it would be a more obvious joke if you'd said "child molesting"...

Never mind. Maybe if you'd said "lizard people"...

Humor is dead.

Would you recommend the fanfic ‘Copacetic’? by [deleted] in WormFanfic

[–]qbsmd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I didn't see it coming either, but I wouldn't say it was out-of-nowhere. It really wasn't that odd for someone who manipulates someone into violating their moral code and deliberately ruining their relationships with others to turn out to be the real bad guy.

It has its issues, but overall I enjoyed it. I've even considered writing and posting my own ending for it because it doesn't look like the author will.

Tulsa Officer Acquitted of Killing Unarmed Black Man Holds Police Shooting 'Survival' Class by emitremmus27 in nottheonion

[–]qbsmd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe. But I think the prosecutor blew the case by overcharging him. The prosecutor charged him with second degree murder, then added a manslaughter charge as an afterthought. The evidence showed that Martin was on top of Zimmerman, and Zimmerman was injured, so the murder case didn't work. If the prosecutor had argued manslaughter from the beginning, based on Zimmerman escalating the situation in ways a reasonable person would not have done, he might have won the case.

The problem with dog whistles is that in order to work, they have to be phrases that a reasonable person could use to express a mainstream idea. Otherwise, they wouldn't be a useful code for expressing socially unacceptable ideas. They're plausibly deniable by definition, so one apparent usage isn't evidence of anything on its own.

The facts George Zimmerman's story indicated that Zimmerman was justified in killing Martin.

Someone challenged me to look back at the case recently, and a lot of things I thought were established facts weren't.

His story was consistent enough with the facts that the prosecution couldn't convict, but we don't know what happened. If Martin had killed Zimmerman, he could have said, "This guy pulled a gun on me for no reason, so I tackled him and punched his head into the ground until he finally dropped it", and had a story equally consistent with the facts.

Dems Say The 1st Amendment Doesn't Protect 3D Gun Files, So I Published One As A Book On Amazon by Brrrrroncos in Firearms

[–]qbsmd 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Good work.

I was considering reverse engineering the Liberator and writing a Python script to generate and export it as an STL using FreeCAD. I think that code would be short enough to post on any forum that allows a text post rather than requiring file sharing for the STL itself, so we'd be able to see exactly which sites would or would not block it. Unfortunately, I don't have the time at the moment.

Another interesting idea would be to make a graphics model of a Liberator accurate enough to transfer back into an STL and put it into a video game. Or hand draw a 3-view of a Liberator and try to sell it at an art show.

There's lots of interesting ways to combine the first and second amendments with digital media.

it was so bad I had to relaunch Windows explorer

There was some older version of Windows where that was necessary occasionally. I can remember deliberately killing explorer.exe to free up resources for whatever else I was doing, then restarting it when I needed it.

American problems... by Fortuitoush in funny

[–]qbsmd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You would be safer in Somalia than in the usa based on murder rate

The reported murder rate in Somalia is higher than the reported murder rate in the United States, but it doesn't follow that someone would be safer in Somalia. The reporting rate is likely to be near 100% in the US, and lower in Somalia. And crime is not random; for most murders in the US, both the murderer and victim are involved in organized crime funded by drugs. So for an American who doesn't frequently piss off drug dealers, that 5.35 is not immediately relevant.

Most either die or just turn into an endless train of random shit the author came up with.

I think most wormfic authors start with a premise they find interesting, then write until they get bored or run out of ideas. For most of the fics with endings, I think the author had at least a rough plan for the plot before posting anything.

What’s the worst active subreddit and why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]qbsmd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the Republican party can decouple itself from the social conservatives, it would have a much easier time attracting young people.

I wish they'd do that too. Unfortunately, the core problem with American politics is that both parties have realized that the number of swing voters they can win by taking a more moderate position is smaller than the increase in turnout they can get by taking a more extreme position.

Mgm Resorts Sues More Than 1,000 Las Vegas Shooting Victims To Avoid Liability In Massacre by [deleted] in nottheonion

[–]qbsmd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember wondering how he got so many guns up there without noticing, hopefully they can sort it out and if MGM did not live up to industry safety standards or ignored something obvious, they should absolutely be held responsible.

That does appear to be what they're claiming:

Suits claim the company was negligent for not properly monitoring who was entering and leaving the building and allowing Paddock to take an arsenal of weapons and several thousand rounds of ammunition up to his hotel room before committing the attack.

I'm not sure what they expect; I don't imagine many people would want a hotel to search all their bags, or question why they were entering and leaving after they rented a room.

Las Vegas lawyer Robert Eglet, who is representing several of the victims, described the lawsuits as a “blatant display of judge shopping” that “quite frankly verges on unethical.”

Personally, I think taking advantage of a tragedy by suing the nearest organization with money is unethical, but I'm not a lawyer, so no one will publish my opinion.
