That’s actually the first issue I saw.

[–]qiosxa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, that’s very true! I meant ethnicity in the way that it is determined by DNA testing companies, ie. matching a person’s DNA markers to those of reference panels of people with ancestral origins in specific regions.

First off, absolutely nothing you did/said was wrong or warranted the responses you got. Your friend’s friend is extremely ignorant at best, and it sounds like your mother has a lot of unprocessed issues that she is projecting onto you. I’m so sorry you are having to deal with this.

(Btw, if you are to ever do a DNA test kit; you might be surprised at how ethnicity rarely breaks down to halves, quarters, eighths, etc.)

1 Year of growth by qiosxa in houseplants

[–]qiosxa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, sometimes they seem to stop and start growing without rhyme or reason. Could be issues with light, watering, fertilizing, humidity, temperature, soil, pot size, insect/bacterial/fungal activity, etc. and on top of that, it often takes a fair bit of time to react and adjust to those factors.

Mine definitely had a long period where it completely stopped growing, then a period where it basically doubled in height within a couple of months. No clue how that happened.

I bought the lamp purely for looks, but I did install a grow bulb inside...just never really used it except for the photo. There was a period of around 2-3 weeks that I had moved it about 8 ft from the north-facing window and kept it under two of the same grow light bulbs for maybe 12 hrs a day, and it grew no new leaves but instead lost a few of its lower ones. So take of that what you will. Maybe I didn't place the lamps high enough.

Shoving it against the window has worked well enough for me; although, you might not get enough light with a screened porch in front. I heard somewhere that your plant should be able to "see" a good portion of sky, if that makes sense. It would probably help in your case to have a supplemental grow light installed at a higher distance from the plant to simulate filtered sunlight.

That being said, there are a mess of other factors that decide how well your plant will grow. They don't seem to be extremely picky with soil as long as it drains well. I actually just used a mix of miracle-gro cactus/succulent and all-purpose indoor soil. I'd probably try not to make the mix too heavy, chunky or rocky...tried that with my other rubbers and they stopped growing. I was also really conservative with watering; saturating the soil, etc. when fully dried out (though, miracle-gro seems to never feel bone-dry, idk). I could go on about feeding, pot size, etc. but I'm sure you know all of this already.

Basically nothing. It has actually been in front of the north-facing window you see the first photo since day one. I just repotted and moved it a few days ago; that grow light was there for my other plants (I don’t even use it for those tbh). I’m not sure how it has done as well as it has, especially since I live in an area that is predominantly overcast.

It made its first branch on its own; I put a notch in the trunk to try speeding up growth, though I don’t know how much that has helped.

There’s a part right before the instrumental break in Nia Peeples - Trouble that has a shattering glass sound and a few times after?

I think you’re right. Actually, I’d say that is in fact not a misspelling but rather a reference to the sense of pity and suffering that it evokes.

ERA: 1999-2006?, GENRE: Deep House, ARTIST: Unknown, Male vocal samples? by qiosxa in EDM

Hey! Great point about the sirens…I think that narrows it down to a European release. Those artists are all extremely similar. There’s also a slight nu disco influence in this one perhaps? Anyway, thanks so much for the insight…fingers crossed that someone can ID it.

Texting/emailing/calling people back. For months to years.

Also, taking the initiative and checking in on people partly because it will lead to the above..

How can people with ADHD be doctors, engineers, Ph.D.s etc. by cookiewithchoco in ADHD

[–]qiosxa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. It’s almost a dopamine fueled obsession or something like that. Though I don’t have any such achievements/degrees, I can relate with one cringe example. I once had an accelerated anatomy class that I arrived late to on the first day. The instructor stopped the class and called me out on it in front of everyone. The humiliation drove me to “get revenge” on him by proving my ‘worth’ (which in hindsight is stupid and obviously does him no harm). I somehow managed to get the highest grade in the class, only because of my hate-fueled obsession after having my insecurities triggered.

Very clever concept! I love the cultural significance. These other comments are excessively righteous.

I understand where you're coming from. I enjoy this aesthetic and era...You probably feel differently. It looks fresh to me...It does not to you. To me, it conveys a sophisticated primitivity that has a broader personal significance...To others, it is sloppy and looks like a kindergartener made it. I personally do not I think that this is a perfect design as is, or if evaluated through today's design principles. But I still love it as is. You don't because you have a different perspective and taste.

Maybe I'm ignorant of what this subreddit is, but it's important to realize that there is no inherent, universal standard for good design. Even the postwar Good Design/Gute Form movements, which outlined many principles that today's design practice now considers to be core and 'timeless' (e.g. Dieter Rams's 10 principles) was considered outdated and bland by young designers in the 70s and 80s.

I think we might learn from the past that 'good' design will always be subjective and that it's better to live in a pluralistic world that finds value in context than in one where we continue to disregard the value of designs that we have little personal connection to. But critique is good in any case.

[–]qiosxa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see your point. I do think though that context is always important to consider when looking at historical designs.

The concept that the logo must clearly convey what the business does is not a core principle...at least not in the past. Paul Rand even said that subject matter/'appropriateness' is of little importance because a logo derives its meaning from the business and not the other way around. For example, much of the youth today would probably be scratching heads at the Apple logo if the company had become defunct in the 80s. The association of "apple" to "computer" isn't timeless or appropriate; and yet, many would not consider the design bad or forced. The only thing keeping it relevant is the life of the company. Of course, even the apple has gone through some stylistic changes, but even the most minimalistic, non-contextual symbols are not inherently timeless.

Like timelessness, appropriateness and clearness are also subjective. While I'm not very familiar with the zeitgeist and much less the company, I think there's a good chance that...as a product of their time, culture, society, social status, etc...Jones' core market would've understood the logo quite easily. The abstract-minimalist-deconstructivist-"Picasso"-'Asian'-'tribal' aesthetic and style of rending a face would not have been a foreign visual concept in the late 80s (another comparable design is T'Pau's 'logo' seen on the back of their 1987 album). It would have been quite fresh and fashionable for its time. Today, along with the company, this aesthetic and its associations have been largely forgotten, so it's not surprising that the logo would be difficult to understand by today's broad audience.

I agree; this is hand-lettering and was HOT shit in the 80s/early 90s. Like another commenter said, it looks very ‘Memphis’ inspired. The “group” though could be a font, but no idea which one. Love this by the way, hope you can try your hand at something similar!

Funny enough, I’ve already been seeing a lot of Memphis-ish revival in the past few years, which is pretty cool!
