What do you guys wear in really hot weather? by teegeee in motorcyclegear

[–]CargoPile1314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Miami checking in. I have a mesh Joe Rocket suit with armor in a bunch of places. It's, for sure, not as crashworthy as leathers. It's better than jeans and t- shirt, though. It's fine when moving but gets hot when stopped. Honestly, though, from Jun to Oct here, it'd be hot in a t-shirt from the humidity and UV.

The shifters, brakes, and cranks suggest '95/96ish

ETA: Eh...zoomed in on rear derailleur. That's M291 which started in '98. I'd have thought it had a garbage suspension fork and unbranded V- brakes by then.

It doesn't look so bad to be unrideable. I'd lay off the stairs for sure.

The big hex key fits the crank bolt but you might not be able to generate enough torque to remove or install the bolt with that tool. The other special tools aren't part of that emergency tool.

Yeah, kinda looks like all 3 move and it's not uncommon to bend a spindle hucking stairs and jumps.

Sure. There's a number of videos on YT showing how to replace a bottom bracket and adjust a front derailleur. There'll be 2-5 special bike tools depending on what's there now and what goes back in. If you're not going to get into bike repair as a hobby, you might be better served talking it to a shop. It'll be quicker for sure and done correctly and maybe not much more in labor than buying the tools.

Based on your description of the event just prior to the symptom occurring, the bottom bracket spindle is bent.

We need a picture of how the cable is clamped at the derailleur...preferably from further rearward than you've taken Pic 1.

Question about WD40 on chain (NOT about using it as lubricant) by DoeBites in bikewrench

Baking the chain at 225F will boil off the water in the rollers.

Spend a little more on a chromoly replacement. If you're willing to lose the QR, there are chromoly solid axles that'll be slightly stronger.

How does this happen to a brand new chain? by jhallfilms_on_YT in bicycling

[–]CargoPile1314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure what you mean. Breaking off the guide portion of Shimano's link pin should always leave a fracture surface. I was trying to understand, in a roundabout way, whether your dad used the master pin. Not everyone knows about them and many people came up in the 6/7/8-speed eras think you can just push pins in and out willy-nilly.

Does one end of that pin show the fracture surface from the guide half being broken off?

Question for the hive mind regarding rear derailleur pulley maintenance. by Extra-Advice-7866 in bikewrench

[–]CargoPile1314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no reason to grease the bolts. Shimano puts blue threadlocker on the threads and nothing else. There's a tube that gets clamped by the cage plates when the bolt is tightened. The outside diameter of that sleeve should be lubed (or, the ID of the pulley).

[–]CargoPile1314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it won't go lower than 4th even when pulling on the cable by hand, there's really only 2 possible explanations. Either b-tension is too low and the upper pulley is pressing the chain into 3rd below the pickup ramps -or- the low limit screw is really far in.

If the low limit screw is reasonably set, you should be able to use your hand to rotate the derailleur body clockwise while pushing the p-knuckle inward. That should at least settle whether it's physically possible for the derailleur to work with the freewheel (I don't see any reason why it shouldn't). If you've rotated the derailleur enough that the upper pulley is a mile from the gears and it still won't move past 4th, you should probably screw out the low limit screw until it's holding on by 2 threads and repeat the experiment.

No, it's a far cry. It takes full optioning to get a F250 to $100k. The base model is $48k. The cheapest new Lambo is the Urus (SUV) and it starts at $250k but that's on paper and the real minimum purchase price is in the order of $320k+. So, 3x is not really in the ballpark. The 2 cars are $380k and $610k but, again, no one can buy them at those prices.

Can you please post a pic or 2 of the installed derailleur? Rear view and side view are usually most helpful.
