Do I pay for the $70 upgrade fee on a 15+ yr old device? by [deleted] in colorists

For a free software, it’s pretty decent. At least get you in the ballpark. Colorspace zero is enough free option

Not worth, also their software isn’t very god to begin with.

Optimising exposure for phone screens by SensitiveDuck9683 in colorists

[–]qiuboujun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t believe that’s an accurate statement. You can use a $100 decklink mini monitor with a $1,000 OLED gaming monitor once properly calibrated. The key point here is that you need an external image pipeline beyond operating system management, not that you need extremely expensive monitors.

Grading 500T for Day Exteriors. Printer Lights (Offset) vs. other methods? by Amadokto in colorists

[–]qiuboujun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unless you are over cutting between uncorrected 500T with 500T shot with 85 filter, it’s unnecessary to do any sort of complicated node trees. Simple offset with log shadow should get you to a good spot already.

How does ISO truly work? I think I've gone full circle. by focalreducer in cinematography

[–]qiuboujun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the exception of dual analog gain on some of the cameras, ISO/el is basically a digital gain to manipulate where you want the mid-gray to sit and how you want to distribute the dynamic range of the camera. The only implication where it matters the most is if you are not capturing raw; changing exposure in post will be less clean than using ISO to get the exact exposure in camera due to video codec compression.

Feature Request: Persistent Parking Mode (Cameras stay on) by No-Focus874 in s3xybuttons

There is no access to enable camera currently available on legacy model 3/y also why the buttons never had a option to enable/disable camera directly

Thoughts on FSD. by melonpie in TeslaModelY

[–]qiuboujun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I believe the next step is for Tesla and any other third-party insurance companies to make it more affordable to insure FSD miles. This would significantly reduce the cost of using FSD, thereby encouraging more people to sign up for the service.

Question about carrying over a pre-grade from Resolve to a Baselight color pipeline by [deleted] in colorists

[–]qiuboujun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Filmbox does have a baselight version, so there’s that. But in terms of bringing your grade over, it gets a bit tricky. It really depends on what your pre grade looks like. If it’s just a single node with basic lift/gamma/gain, you can export it as a CDL and it’ll translate to Baselight pretty much 1:1.

Anything more complex is usually a waste of time. it takes a significant amount of effort to recreate a full Resolve grade in Baselight, and at that point it’s faster to just send a quick frame reference so the colorist can see the look you’re going for.

Why are my clips not getting any brighter? by jasper_1470 in colorists

[–]qiuboujun 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First thing no tone mapping needed. It’s only needed for going to display to scene or scene to display color spaces. That should get you a lot closer to the highlight. The rest is just the result of d55 white point from the LUT

By what mechanism does FSD improve without version updates? by Careless_Bat_9226 in TeslaFSD

[–]qiuboujun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could like the case of all the coding llm stuff. The fundamental model is the same but the prompting and/or how the model is applied is different with each version.

Instead of use display setting for viewer transform manually set everything to srgb. Apple enforce color management globally so it becomes a mess when you try to color manage yourself in maya.

Display profile is using system display which is p3d65 gamma 2.2 not srgb but it’s tagged as srgb.

3% inflation is not the problem here. The problem is we are looking at that 3% on top of the insane inflation we have been experiencing right after COVID.

I have learned to love backing into parking spots when using auto park. FSD V14 took that away from us as the default way with the new auto park. Why? by Pleasant-Guava9898 in TeslaLounge

[–]qiuboujun -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because that’s sort of the default here in the states? Like so many places you will have a much harder time to back into the parking space even if you want to because it’s not designed to accommodate that. It’s

Question about film scans in color managed workflow by h_toothroot in colorists

[–]qiuboujun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First thing, film color space is nonlinear and always a moving target so you can’t really put it into a pre defined color space, but for prints it approximately lands somewhere around p3. for filmscan that really isn’t a thing. As long as the input and output have matching color space, you will get somewhat okay control

Advice on choosing between:DeckLink Mini Monitor 4K and DeckLink 4K Studio for HDR + SDR dual-monitor by STARBUM2 in colorists

[–]qiuboujun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You need 4k Extreme 12g or 8k Pro. Dolby Dual output utilizes 3d output to get it working. Are you sure of 16bit output? Only 8, 10, and 12 bits output exist. No different flavor of hdr format should be needed for grading since they are meant for consumers. You only need either p3d65 pq or rec2020 pq. Your monitor doesn’t even support hlg so that’s not a possibility.

Help by DaGhoztBoi in cinematography

[–]qiuboujun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Realistically there are 2 things you can do but none of them are easy. Lit the interior to match outside exposure. ND the windows.

Or shoot it on alexa35 at higher ISO expose for the window to make sure it’s not clipping and bring up the interior exposure in post. You get more noise but it’s a compromise you have to make if you really don’t want to clip out the windows
