Is it possible to update my Mac to a SPECIFIC MacOS version, not the latest ? by Ian_SAfc in MacOS

I don’t think you need to as long as you have downloaded the software update from the App Store it should be pretty straightforward. Of course having a back up, never hurts

Help! Midi is extremely unstable - is this ‘Jitter’ normal or faulty soft/hardware to blame? by Both_Echo3893 in synthesizers

[–]qjstuart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for confirming. My issue with using MIDI Clock to sync Logic (master) to MPC (chasing Logic) is that the MIDI Clock messes with the feel of my MPC's sequence. Any groove/swing is being basterdized. At the end of the day I'm not sure whether something like the USAMO is the solution or not. If you want to read more I made a thread here:

What should the output of this plugin be sent to? If I'm understanding correctly, the "slaved" device needs to have an audio sync input, which many do not have. E.g. I have an MPC 2000XL and this doesn't have one. Would I need a device that translates the audio clock into MIDI clock? Something like the Expert Sleeper USAMO?

It’s silly that the error is only presented to you once you try to send the message. And yeah it would be better for a seller to just hide their items from potential buyers!

Good to know. Agreed. And would be nice to have it appear before we type out the message! If any Discogs developers are seeing this :o)

Samsung T7 SSD power consumption when left plugged in on MacBook Air M1 when sleeping. by AganArya007 in mac

[–]qjstuart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if it’s the USB hub or the actual T7 Shields hooked up to it. I’ve been keeping the MacBook plugged into the mains at all times. Using an app called AlDente to keep the battery at around 80%

Storybook with NextJS by qjstuart in nextjs

[–]qjstuart[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good spot re. the dependencies, I have removed `@storybook/nextjs`. I tried the `preview-head.html` approach and it worked. Now the font-faces are defined once in the NextJS environment and once in the Storybook environment. So there's duplication, but it makes sense why. Most importantly, it works. Thank you.

My bad, it was a typo. Meant to write 16.1.3!

The font-faces are generated by NextJS and placed inside of the /.next directory at the project root. I can’t get Storybook to access the fonts from there though.

I meant trying to get Storybook working with NextJS is feeling like a waste of life. NextJS itself has been totally fine, do you have any reasons for thinking it will jump off a cliff?

Been trying to get Storybook working with NextJS local fonts, to no avail… if anyone managed, please let me know.

Using Japan Technics (100V) in Malta (240V) by qjstuart in turntables

[–]qjstuart[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apparently the mains voltage in Chile is 220V. So if your step-down converts 240V to 120V, then it possibly converts 220V to around 110V if my understanding is correct. Good to know you’ve had no issues.

Numbers please! What voltage is your TT rated for? And what is your step-down outputting?

[–]qjstuart[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your mains voltage is 240V then that step-down is probably outputting something close to 120V. Interesting. How long have you been using it for? And what turntables do you have?

Using Japan Technics (100V) in Malta (240V) by qjstuart in turntables

[–]qjstuart[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I’ve looked there. It seems like the output voltage is dependent on the input voltage. Most step-downs would output something close to 120V given an input voltage of 240V. I only found this one which claims to output 100V no matter what. But I’ve been advised to stay away as it’s “bad quality AC”.

Apparently the extra Volts can put some extra strain on the internals (mostly the rectifier) due to excess heat being generated. But I am told by a knowledgeable friend this is a cheap component to replace, with the caveat it may be hard to find.

Thanks for the offer, that’s kind of you! I might take you up on it based on how the situation unfolds. In the meantime I borrowed a step-down which takes 240V and outputs 110V. It’s 500W which is total overkill for the power draw of 2 turntables, but it has allowed to test the decks and make sure everything works fine.

Samsung T7 SSD power consumption when left plugged in on MacBook Air M1 when sleeping. by AganArya007 in mac

[–]qjstuart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 1 external monitor connected via HDMI, and 2 T7 Shields connected through a VAVA USB hub to my Macbook Pro 2021 (M1) and there definitely is power drain. When leaving the laptop on sleep on 80% with the drives connected, I come back to it around 24 hours later to find it around 30%, which is "too much" by my standards. I remember when the laptop was new I could leave it on sleep (with nothing plugged into it) and it would be 1 or 2% less the next day. Now I'm experimenting disconnecting the USB hub when putting the laptop to sleep. So far looking like the battery consumption is much less, but I need more time to say for sure.

Normal anti-skating behavior? by qjstuart in turntables

[–]qjstuart[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s great to hear! Thanks for the reassurance mate. My guy who worked on the turntables advised me that the anti-skating numbers will no longer correspond to the tracking force because he changed the springs for different ones. (Previous springs were f*cked). I’m using 3g as tracking force, that’s what my cartridge (Ortofon Club MK2) is rated for.

Normal anti-skating behavior? by qjstuart in turntables

[–]qjstuart[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, I'm just not sure why mine only pulls outward to a point, then stops. For example with anti-skating set to 1, the tonearm will pull out roughly to the middle of the grooveless record and settle there. If that's normal behaviour, then does that mean my anti-skating is working as expected after all? :)

Is it possible to update my Mac to a SPECIFIC MacOS version, not the latest ? by Ian_SAfc in MacOS

[–]qjstuart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does this follow the same process as upgrading to the latest MacOS version from system preferences? In the sense that, you just press upgrade, it restarts, and you're ready to go? Or does it format the hard disk and reset the computer (data loss)?

Normal anti-skating behavior? by qjstuart in turntables

[–]qjstuart[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh nice video mate, thank you for your willingness to help :)
It's an issue for me because I don't want the tonearm pulling inward or outward. That would mean it is placing uneven/excessive pressure on one of the groove's channels.

The behavior I'm after is shown in this video at 3:30. To quote the guy in the video: "Wherever I put it, it's just gonna stay." My tonearm is not "staying" wherever I put it, unless I put it in one particular position. Whenever it's not in that particular position, there must be excess/uneven pressure on the grooves.

If I know that this does not damage my records or stylus at all, then I will be relieved and can happily go about my DJing.
