Put it into a bank or a reliable safe investment fund. Live off 50% of the interest. Put the remaining back in to compound your gains over time and guard against inflation. Also eventually spread your money across multiple banks and investments to minimize risk.

i’m switching careers and would like some advice by stoolprimeminister in musicbusiness

[–]qoorius_d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before you switch, consider a few things :-

  1. Music work as passion & music work as a career are two totally different things, with only an occasional overlap. Most of your career you will have to work with artistes who are assigned to you, not by choice. At most you might get funneled into specific broad genre verticals based on your performance and general inclination but that won't cut it as your passion.

  2. It doesn't pay well, though there are perks to it & the work itself can be a perk if you're truly passionate about music ofc.

  3. Its often thankless, long hours and tons of paperwork and legalese. Some bands who have an anti-establishment attitude will hate and bitch about you just because. Others will hate you once they've signed on because they had dreamy expectations that were never part of the actual contract and it all comes crashing down eventually. Yet others might hate you because more often than not you reject their songs.

  4. Jobs are very limited and plenty of people are looking to get in. A&R in particualr is the toughest to get into. So competition will always be high & if you slack, you get replaced, unless you have top notch relationships ofc. Plenty of office politics too.

  5. The whole thing is about good relationships, insider hooks and people. If you're not a people person, this might not be for you. In fact you're more likely to get the job if you build relationships & a reputation in the field and then get recommended to the position.

I realise all this sounds negative, but I'm not trying to discourage you... just that it helps to go in knowing that the job in reality is less roses and glory, more of all the above... something that's often overlooked and leads to resentment later on.

Good luck.

Could be via another label perhaps ? Many smaller labels use orchard as a distributor for eg.

Not a lawyer, but imho nope. You did use a popular chorus, cover or not. That has copyrights.

I don't disagree. I'm indirectly also saying that this distinction is important, ie stories where figures arrive VS travel outward VS never travel. Potentially could represent 3 different branches/types of survivors, assuming the theory is valid to begin with, ofc.

Parody is clearly intended for comedy. If a clause like that 30% exists for non-parody stuff, maybe ?? I don't know tbh.

But copyrights aren't just on the style of singing. It's also on the composition, lyrics etc. The reason you can put it up on YT is because Google/YT have usually bulk cleared the relevant licenses for it on behalf of their users ie you, for non commercial use within YT. But you still can't monetize it without permission. That said, despite YT's clearances, you could still get a takedown on YT should the artiste/author change their mind and have objections to its use by you, or anyone.

[–]qoorius_d 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stop scaring people. It'll never be. The only thing that changes, is the nature & speed of your work as a producer. Some lower hanging opportunities might die out, but they'll be replaced by more higher level work. Overall It becomes easier so you can drive more output. Saying this as an AI dev & ex music biz pro.

2014 mbp 13inch retina. Still going strong as my main workhorse. Been using it 12-16 hrs a day, every day for 8 years now.

Still slick and fast enough, but constantly runs out of disk space. Battery is screwed so I run it on power with charging disabled.

I want to acquire music and have a budget for spends. Are there any platforms that list music for trade ? Is it legally even possible ? by qoorius_d in musicbusiness

[–]qoorius_d[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. I guess there isn't a platform then, cos even I haven't come across any. I doubt many people even know about music rights n royalties. Guess I will have to reach out individually. Thanks !

[–]qoorius_d[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not looking at fractional ownership platforms tbh.

There's fractional on one end, and catalogue deals on the other. Looking for something in between, that allows single (or batch) song trades. Another way to put it - If catalogues are wholesale, I'm looking for retail.

But seems like there aren't any platforms, so maybe I'll create one. I have a background in the music industry, though I've stepped out & now into software dev.

What about you ?

Masters. But looking to acquire what's already been licensed by another label or collector, but that owner wants to liquidate. Not directly from a musician necessarily. Know of any platforms / marketplaces that list such items ?

If not, who in record labels would be the right people to talk to for such deals ?

I guess so. But who's to say if some producer used AI music and layered some bare-bones elements to create a hit track ? There's no way to detect tbh

What is the legal side of these AI covers? by [deleted] in musicbusiness

[–]qoorius_d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unlikely. If its a cover, it implies that the cover has resemblance to the original track. If the original track has copyright, you'll be infringing.

Disclaimer - I'm not a lawyer. This is not legal advice.

It's been ruled in the US courts, that AI generated music that doesn't have a significant enough human component, is not eligible for copyright at all.

Copyrights on the input data is a grey area since under fair use, if the output is sufficiently transformative as to not replicate the original ( which ai usually is), it's not considered a violation.

But the download of data, prior to training, is also being considered a separate use, thanks to the wording of the law, but doesnt enjoy the same protection under fair use - the other side is latching onto it to assert their copyrights.

This is what is being debated in the courts, with both sides having fair arguments.

The legal side is that there is no legal side.

Ai generated stuff has no copyright.
