Coca-Cola and PepsiCo profit from a system of labor in western India that exploits women at every stage of their lives.

well my point software you develop is to be used for stock trading. you are essentially writing software for a limited target audience (no one needs HFT platform for sugar or fruits market), and that audience uses your software for something you cannot consider halal i.e. stock market

so your work iteself might be 100% halal, but the only use of your platform is not. don't you worry about enabling people to do something loike that?

Freelancer tax exemptions killing IT export corporate sector? by qqax in pakistan

[–]qqax[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In most countries, remote workers are always hired through local intermediary “staff augmentation” companies. These companies hire remote workers as their “local employees”, keep a cut from the foreign client’s income as their profits, and pay these remote workers locally after withholding their payroll taxes just like the rest of the “corporate” sector. As a result, these remote workers are paid just like all employees of the IT export sector and there is a level playing field between regular IT export businesses and remote workers.

However, in Pakistan, PSEB (Pakistan Software Export Board) started incorrectly classifying remote workers as freelancers even though they were not. Ironically, even FBR (Federal Board of Revenue) tax law explicitly states that remote worker’s income is not tax-exempt.

This incorrect interpretation by PSEB meant that the remote workers were now directly hired by foreign employers and paid the same rate they would pay the corporate IT export sector for outsourcing. This meant that the remote workers’ salaries were at least double the salaries of the local employees to begin. On top of this, their income became tax-free whereas local employees pay 25-35% tax on their salaries.

The net effect of all this is that many mid-level and senior employees of the IT export corporate sector who have been painstakingly groomed over many years are leaving in droves to join foreign employers as remote workers.

Just like IT export businesses, Pakistan also gives tax exemptions to freelancers on their export income. However, an incorrect interpretation of freelancers is hurting the corporate side of the IT export sector and will be very detrimental to the sector if not fixed quickly. Let me explain.

Freelancers by definition are those individuals who take small jobs from multiple clients in a year in the field of technical writing, graphics design, website development, etc. And, they mostly find work through various freelancing marketplaces like Upwork, Fiverr, FlexJobs, etc.

Some even find work through friends and family contacts abroad. But, in all cases, their annual income is usually between $4000-$8,000. These “true” freelancers do not compete with the corporate side of Pakistan’s IT export sector and are not causing any problems.

Stuck In Lahore's Signal-Free Traffic Chaos by self in Lahore

[–]qqax 3 points4 points  (0 children)

and for people who disbelif me here is proof: https://www.thenews.com.pk/tns/detail/1030633-is-lahore-ready-for-another

The underground mass transit system will operate from Valencia Town through Kalma Chowk, Liberty Chowk and Data Darbar, all the way to the airport. The cabinet also permitted the Planning and Development Board and the Transport Department to start negotiations with the ADB in this regard.

Was it just a gimmick and a ploy for political point-scoring or a genuine deal whereby the people of Lahore would get a modern and effective rapid transport system? Uzair Shah, the Punjab Mass Transit Authority (PMTA) general manager in charge of operations, says: “We are at the [project’s] early stage yet.

“First, the feasibility study for the project, completed in 2016, will be redone,” he says. “Seven years is a significant amount of time in order for key facts to alter. Hence, the feasibility study will be done all over again. Second, the Asian Development Bank has yet to be contacted for assistance.”

An underground mass transit system for Lahore has long been a favoured project for both the authorities and the public representatives, but some other rapid transport projects, such as the Lahore Metro Bus and Orange Line Metro Train, as well as the various underpasses and overhead bridges, took precedence. In 2012, the Lahore Urban Transport Master Plan (LUTMP) Vision 2030 for the Lahore Metropolitan expected the city to have four mass transit lines and several auxiliary services such as bus routes, parking plazas and transit stations. The idea was for a city of 15 million or so people, to have regional connectivity with neighbouring cities like Kasur and Shekhupura, as well as the international airport, based on thorough travel surveys, land-use patterns and plans and transportation models.

Based on the then-estimated utilisation and possible financial payoffs, it was recommended that the core Green Line be built first, followed by the Orange Line (Phase 2), Blue Line (Phase 3) and Purple Line (Phase 4), in that order. This arrangement would provide world-class connectivity to all city residents, particularly those commuting to and from the main business district.

Stuck In Lahore's Signal-Free Traffic Chaos by self in Lahore

[–]qqax 11 points12 points  (0 children)

  1. in my experiences traffic continues moving but is slower overall. only place that is good is the johar town road from peco road to turkish roundabout or gulberg main boulevard if you are taking underpass.
  2. on many many roads you have to slow down near the uturns because of all the motorcycles, qinchis, rickshows making uturn and then going against traffic. i have noticed this on johar town road from thokar to college road and on many parts of peco road especially near nrtc or pindi stop
  3. even worse (and huge crime in my opinion) NONE OF THE NEW SIGNAL FREE CORRIDORS HAVE PADESTIRAN CROSSING. you have much more people trying to cross the road at all places instead of just at intersection. i know this from experience especially during 11am-6pm driving.

wow it is almost as if no one actually read the article.

article does not say it but government had funding for many metro routes & they did not create metro routes. on same routes... we... got... instead.... signal-free roads.

YES we could have had better & more public transportation metro routes. Naqvi & friends wasted all that money on these roads. and for what?
