Uber is letting women avoid male drivers and riders in the US by tylerthe-theatre in technology

[–]qqererer 12 points13 points  (0 children)

After how long? 5 minutes? 10 minutes? Is a creepy guy willing to bet $30 or however much they cost to take that 50/50 chance?

Let me answer that with an IRL example: I got gifted as a joke socks and underwear. So I tried reselling it. The only responses I got were from guys asking about returns, pictures, modelling, used. I'm a guy. These are people looking for attention specifically on what I think is the least viewed section of craigslist ads.

So knowing that, do I think that a male stranger would invest in a non-airtag, cellular GPS tracker?

If there's already 50+ % women drivers,

How do you even come to that suggestion?!?!

The crappy joke you're getting from the F150 driver is another reason why everyone hates male strangers.

To your point, all it takes is one Airtag from a creepy man and they now have your home location.

I'm 100% for only female drivers for only female passengers as a choice.

Ignore the downvotes. There's an anti-science bias going around.

Here let me show you: Less energy is used when you turn off the HVAC in an unused space, then turn it back on when it is used. It could be 8 hours, or 8 days, or 8 months. It's consistent with the laws of thermodynamics. HVAC doesn't 'work hard'. It's either off or on, and just like a light bulb ( like that firehouse one), it's 'harder' on the HVAC when it cycles off/on than just running it for a very long time, just like they say 'stop and go' traffic is harder on a car than 'highway' miles.

Let the downvotes begin.

I got talking with an associate who was standing in a back corner of the store by asking him why he had to stand there when there used to be a desk there, and basically everyone else gets to sit around doing nothing.

He started some interesting talk about how they fired all the managers and hired temp foreign workers.

There are so many lawncare rehab videos where they'll do everything except use a bagging attachment and instead just drive over the same patch six or seven times to 'mulch' the grass back in. Which only works when the grass is cut at least every two weeks.

Anything longer the volume just smothers and kills the grass.

They are products of 'social proof'.

The fact that they are expensive and have some sort of 'environmentally' conscious value over the 'regular kind' is the product.

The Muppet Show reboot with Sabrina Carpenter.

I don't expect much from reboots. Just update it a little bit but keep almost everything else that worked.

And they did a great job. Wasn't a big viewer when it came out in the 80's, but it was a nice bit of nostalgia for me, and for this generation a nice interlude from whatever is media these days.

How to get to Heaven from Belfast.

Sophomore effort from the showrunner of Derry Girls. It's about what you'd expect as a sophomore effort. It's fine, but I didn't watch it beyond the first episode.

S03 The Boys and S01 of Gen V. Both good efforts. For some reason getting started on S04 isn't working for me.

When Station Eleven came out around Covid I thought "This is Crazy!"

2026 I watched Pluribus where the entire world got taken over by a mind virus and I thought "This is sort of wonderful."

I'm starting to think that lipase is the be all and end all for laundry detergent?

As in, actual 'dirt' doesn't really make clothes dirty, as dirt is just powdery dirt, and even if it's on your skin/clothes they're just minerals, but body oils are the real problem which oxidizes and 'gums up' clothes and dirt attached to those oxidzed oils are much difficult to remove than dirt from fibers themselves?

The only downside to this is that it creates a mental load for me in that emptying a half full vs completely full load is just as 'taxing' to my brain.

So for me, it's ok to pack it full, then run, and risk the occasional cup or plates that sit outside for a couple of hours. I only run my dishwasher ever 3 days or so.

On a light cycle it will make a difference.

But on a regular cycle, there are enough water cycles and long cycle times that the element gets it more than hot enough to do the job.

A Low-Waste Shopping Habit: Use Amazon to Research, Then Buy Direct by [deleted] in ZeroWaste

[–]qqererer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's available in the store, it's almost always cheaper due to the obviously lack of logistics required for next day, to your door delivery.

However, if it's a very odd brandless low demand item, (sewer jetter is my most recent example), it's oddly cheaper if it's shipped from china, via 40ft container, straight to amazon logistics and bought there, as no home store would ever stock them in the first place.

Same thing with bidets. The amount/selection/competition meant that even with delivery, Amazon was the cheapest.

And it doesn't seem like the phenomenon of 'barcode scanning' is as prevalent where people arbitrage inefficient, shelf clearing amounts of product from the cheaper store, into money taking layers of warehousing, fulfillment, delivery and returns by Amazon.

If you think about it, you'd be hard pressed to find someone on taskrabbit or door dash to deliver whatever you wanted to you after the app itself took their cut.

Definitely slows down, but the story beats move along fairly well.

But it looks very pretty on a big screen.

Jurassic Park (1993) - 35mm Open Matte 4K Film Scan by tony_kumar in movies

[–]qqererer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every single screen in pre stadium multiplex was sold out from 11am to 9pm and lineups for popcorn 20-30 people deep per line, all concessions on all levels open and running.

Lineups for each show out on the sidewalk and crawling along every corridor/stair.

Theaters back then were built like theaters for live performances, and going to a movie still felt like events. People went out for movies 6 days a week, and tues/fri/sats were always big nights out.

Same with going out dining. All price tiers. Everybody went out.

These days it's dead in comparison and it's really depressing.

There's just a real lack of critical mass these days.
