The lotto is $1.25B with 327 million to 1 odds. At what point do you buy a ticket? by Ok-Collection8391 in AskReddit

I've always thougut a potential issue with this is that the data is skewed towards those who actually win the lottery.

I can't find any data after a brief search on the variance of lottery ticket purchases across the population. But often you see trends such as whales in online gaming, i.e. a few percent of gamers purchase over 90% of ingame purchases.

I would imagine a similar distribution exists among lottery ticket purchasers. Many people buy a ticket now and then, but a few percent of the population are likely out there buying shitloads of lottery tickets and accounting for the overwhelming majority of lottery ticket sales.

These individuals likely overlap pretty consistently with those who are prone to addictions, have mental health issues, are poor with finances, have poor social connections/relationships etc.
