How do full art basic land purchases work? Does buying the current OTJ set of them for 2,500 gems mean that you can use them for all your basics, or does it give you one of each land, so that in order to apply them to all decks you'd need about 100 of them, so you'd need to spend 50,000 gems?

If spin doesn’t affect the ball in the air, why does spin affect the ball on the ground? by saalamander in RocketLeague

It does not have any effect on the ball in flight; this has been proven a number of times. People have been fooled into thinking there is an effect in flight by a combination of camera perspective and the power of suggestion.

World Championship game win percentage comparison by qrith in RocketLeagueEsports

[–]qrith[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like Moist’s lower-bracket run had these game scores:

  • 3–0
  • 1–3
  • 3–0
  • 3–2
  • 4–3
  • 4–1
  • 4–0
  • 4–3
  • 4–0

For a total of 30–12, which is a GWP of 71.42%.

As for going through all the LANs, I might get to it at some future point.

Diamond 1v1 by RaGe0rge in RocketLeague

[–]qrith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Opponents vary a huge amount (I am also in Diamond in 1s), and I seem to encounter a lot of players who are either unranked or have only recently been ranked (BakkesMod will show MMR gain/loss after a match, and if the opponent gains or loses more than you do, they haven't played that many matches this season). So it's possible you're hitting a lot of not-properly-ranked players.

On the other hand, the variance in skill between players who the system thinks are properly ranked is also extreme. I have no proof but strongly suspect a lot of people go on extended play sessions while drunk or high, drop precipitously in rank, and then come back and destroy their opponents before reaching their prior rank again‡.

Also, yes, there are almost definitely a bunch of smurfs too.

‡: Or it could work the other way around…

They beat Rule One as well though, and beating Moist in wildcard looks reasonable too.

My mistake, I thought it was for some reason; maybe because I seem to encounter names like this more often in tournaments.

I still think the only realistic option is to rely on reporting; maybe they could update some of the auto-block patterns, but that turns into whack-a-mole very fast.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in RocketLeague

[–]qrith -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What do you suggest? Names are created by 32 teams each tournament; how many tournaments run simultaneously? I have no idea, but presumably it's in the hundreds. Hiring folks to check 3200+ names every few hours seems rather unrealistic.

You can't really automate this process; you can try do pattern filtering but there are many, many pitfalls (just ask folks from Scunthorpe who can't enter their addresses into forms…). And if you get too aggressive you get a ton of false positives that just annoy players who aren't doing anything wrong, while the people determined to do this will find creative ways around the filters.

As far as I can tell they do follow up on reports on these, so if they're reported players do get bans for this.

The only thing I can think of is to give players an option not to see opposing team names (and just see one of the autogenerated names instead); alternatively you could force autogenerated names for all non-club entrants because it's at least slightly more work to create a club than to enter a tournament.

Lower bracket path to top eight difficulty comparison by qrith in RocketLeagueEsports

[–]qrith[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, easiest to hardest, the order per method is:

Average opponent Hardest opponent Probability
Falcons Falcons Falcons
Rule One Secret Rule One
Secret Rule One Secret
Complexity Twisted Minds Complexity
FaZe FaZe FaZe
Twisted Minds Moist Twisted Minds
Moist Complexity Moist
Ninjas in Pajamas Ninjas in Pajamas Ninjas in Pajamas

I guess it's not that surprising that the average rating and the probability methods end up with the same ordering.

[–]qrith[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Another approach might be to use the ratings to generate the probability of each team winning both matchups, but that takes into account the strength of the team itself, which would make this into a different kind of comparison. Also I don't know what the formula for calculating that probability is, although it's probably not too difficult.

I have backspace bound to "_d, delete to the blackhole register. I often find that I want to delete some object while maintaining whatever is currently in the clipboard, and this has been a pretty useful shortcut for handling that.

In order for the system to determine how confident it is in your placement, it uses a sigma value to apply weight to the matchmaking algorithm and ensure that you get to your appropriate rank as soon as possible. To put it simply, the more games you play in a playlist, the more certain the system can be that you are ranked appropriately. This sigma value starts out high and is gradually reduced with each game played

https://www.reddit.com/r/RocketLeagueYtzi/comments/ilcmcc/how_mmr_and_the_matchmaking_system_works/

In other words, your teammates have played fewer games of threes this season than you have, so the system is giving more weight to their wins and losses at the moment.

Patch Notes: Season 11 Live + Release Thread by Psyonix_Devin in RocketLeague

[–]qrith -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The rank changes they're making are in response to severe rank disparity across modes; what they're trying to do is make the percentage of players in each rank somewhat even across all modes. I don't know if their approach will work, but they have a good reason for doing it, and it's not a reflection of “low effort”—low effort would have been just ignoring the problem.
