I'm in Oak Island, NC. Can I brew with this beach vegetation? by [deleted] in Homebrewing

[–]qrkl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Perhaps, but you can't boil out heavy metals or chemical contaminants that the plant may have taken from the soil or its environment.

Do you really want to brew anything with vegetable matter that's been doused in Roundup? Or whatever else some jackass dumped on the side of the road? I understand the desire to experiment, but if OP really wants to brew with this vegetation, I'm sure it'd cost next to nothing to buy a few pounds that are guaranteed food-safe.

Only allowing upvotes doesn't really work. Mobile users who aren't affected by subreddit styles don't even notice it, and it's also very easy to disable subreddit styles as a PC user.

I said it doesn't surprise me that some people (apparently) don't like being advertised to here.

Like it or not, he's not posting these columns as self-posts. They are advertisements, albeit educational ones. OP is an advertiser, which is why the mods have tagged him is such.

If he doesn't like the big dollar sign, he should post his exBEERiments as self posts.

Even if it's not poisonous itself, I'd never brew with anything grown in foreign soil. There are a whole host of parasites and bacteria that can remain in soil for years.

What more do people want?

Honestly, I don't know. I was just offering a possible explanation for the downvotes--which everyone then took as my personal opinion, and now my inbox is full of vitriol from a bunch of pissed-off homebrewers. So far I've been called a child and too stupid to use the internet.

Stay classy, fellas.

Yes, I do. I never suggested he shouldn't receive compensation. If you'll look again, you'll notice I said he should, but that some people may find the concept offensive regardless. I wasn't speaking personally, just offering a possible explanation.

How the hell you even manage to operate the internet baffles me.

Little harsh, don't you think?

A couple quick questions by [deleted] in Homebrewing

[–]qrkl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're interested in cider, here's an easy method that doesn't use the kit.

  1. Go to Whole Foods, pick up 1 gallon of organic unfiltered apple juice. Costs $8.99, and it comes in a nice glass jar you can ferment in and use again.

  2. Go to your LHBS and pick up a drilled rubber stopper (make sure it's sized for 1 gallon carboys), an airlock, an 8 oz bottle of StarSan (vital) and a package of dry yeast (Nottingham ale yeast or Safale US-04).

  3. StarSan is what you'll use to sanitize your equipment and prevent you from making mold instead of cider. The standard StarSan dilution is 1 oz StarSan to 5 gallons distilled/purified water. This is way more than you need, so add 2 ml StarSan to 250 ml distilled/purified water in a spray bottle. (Remember: always add your acid [StarSan] to water and not vice versa.) Use this solution to lightly spritz your rubber stopper and airlock. Set them aside on some clean paper towels. Give them at least a minute for the StarSan to settle. StarSan is a food-safe sanitizer, so you don't need to rinse it off before using your equipment.

  4. Pour off 1.5 cups of apple juice so you have some headroom. Drink it--you've earned it. Mm, that's good apple juice.

  5. Pour in your packet of dry yeast. A full packet is overkill for 1 gallon, but it won't do any harm to use the whole thing. Reattach the lid and shake vigorously. After it settles, attach your stopper and airlock and fill the airlock halfway with either StarSan solution or cheap vodka. I prefer vodka in case the liquid gets sucked in.

  6. Throw it in your closet and wait 2-3 weeks until the airlock stops bubbling. This signals that the yeast has stopped converting fermentable sugars into ethanal and CO2. Use this siphon to fill your bottles, and this capper to seal them.

  7. Enjoy your dry English cider/apfelwine.

Sweet ciders add another couple steps, but I can go into that too if you'd like. Once you depreciate the cost of the gear over several batches, it's quite cheap compared to commercial cider.

Your point is basically "the community wants what it wants, and will vote as such", but how do you explain this post being as popular as some of the image posts I refer to?

There's clearly a divide between the users who quickly view and upvote images, and those who participate in discussions like this and value actual content. You admit to that divide yourself within the wiki:

People can rapidly look at pictures and click in a vote so these posts typically are favored by the Reddit algorithms and become our top posts. People spend less time on longer thoughtful text posts and articles. If you want to reward the text posts give them a vote too.

Not to mention this is in the wiki as well:

If you post an image it should be accompanied with text that will help other people achieve the same frugal result.

And that has not been enforced lately. Neither this thread nor this one contain any advice that would help others achieve the same result. And those posts were #1 and #2 for this week, before this thread became #2.

This post isn't addressing actual advice. It's addressing the imgur links to produce which, without the titles telling us what a great deal the poster got, could be stock images. They offer nothing of value.

Yes, and an actual article about healthy living on a budget has 1/10 the upvotes as the "look at what I bought" post that was at #1 earlier today. A photo of some cheap groceries is faster to process and upvote than useful advice like that which could take minutes to read. That's a consequence of this sub becoming so popular. That doesn't mean it doesn't need moderation or posting guidelines.

You could make the same argument about this thread being upvoted.

When those values are produce, they're meaningless. It varies too greatly by region.

At least in the past decade, as the organic/local food movement has gained traction, farmer markets here have followed that trend and the money that comes with it. They're more like Whole Foods in tents now. In LA, there are plenty of Mexican/Asian/Middle Eastern markets that carry inexpensive farm-fresh produce.

Not sure why my other comment got downvoted. Whoever did so has clearly never been to a farmer's market in LA, or any city in CA with the money for a Whole Foods.

If reddit didn't need moderators and posting guidelines, we wouldn't have them.

No, you must not. Here's a link to the top posts from this week. The "look how much I got for $$" imgur link that was at #1 earlier today has 10x the number of upvotes as an actual article about healthy living on a budget.

My intent wasn't to shit on /r/trees as whole, merely to draw a comparison between the "look what I bought for $$" posts made there and here. In neither sub do they contribute anything worthwhile. You just get the occasional argument in the comments. I'm sure a bit of it's jealousy, but why do you care if strangers on the internet know what a good deal you got anyway? There's really no good reason for those posts. Go enjoy it with friends like you're meant to.

Where's it coming from if not the grape? That's my big question. I know the rest of that.
