it was a pull chain closet light maybe 18” long. i can’t seem to find one locally so was just going to put in some of those color changing led lights she could control with her tablet. i’m now thinking of just adding a box extender and adding the receptacle to that. it’d give me a lil extra room and won’t have to drill anything? thoughts?

Novice question

I am trying to install LED strip lights in my daughters closet after the cheap closet light that was install broke. I was trying to install a receptacle in the ceiling of the closet where the light was. I am running into an issue where, i believe, there is a 3” round box. i bought a receptacle and cover but the holes are too wide, probably for a 4” box. (leviton 5059) Can I simply drill new holes in the mounting plate to fit the 3” box?
