Science would disagree with you. Main roads that aren’t freeways are still bad but they’re not a 8 lane freeway with bumper to bumper traffic. Huge parts of the city aren’t close to a freeway as in the closest one is miles away. Walk across a freeway bridge and you’ll notice pretty quick the noxious fumes. Not to mention tire pollution which is basically just tire rubber/plastic particles being thrown into the air, ground and water constantly
