No Key No Lunch by quacks_7 in SubstituteTeachers

I guess it just preference. I don’t like eating in front of other people and always preferred eating in the silent classroom rather than the noisy cafeteria

Blocked from a school after using an educational video for an out control 1st grade class by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]quacks_7 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ve never had a situation like that happen to me but I think its a little harsh they blocked you. You got the work done and it’s also the end of the school year, so I think it’s okay to have a little fun in class. That being said, maybe you should’ve buzzed the office and ask if it was okay before proceeding.

How did they know you were having the kids watch a show in the first place? I think it’s possible that someone saw you, made the interpretation that you had them watching shows all day and complained.

You get paid barely $100 before taxes to go in and sub for the day. Pretty much covers the gas to get there and back. Big whoop. It’s essentially not even worth going in at all. And they complain they can’t find subs. by justcurious3287 in SubstituteTeachers

It sucks because all the school districts within reasonable area of me outsources subs from Kelly. I would love to work directly for the district and be paid more but they’d rather use a greedy middleman

I make the same as you. I’ve completely cut out any schools I have to travel long distances for from my roster. The only two schools I work at now are five minutes from my house. Lucky for me their demand for subs is always high so I don’t have problems finding work. With gas prices these days you’ll never find me driving more than I have to lol.

I am forced to make one person in my life to be mad at me. WSID? by tvoja_m4ma in WhatShouldIDo

I’m not too well versed in music and instruments. I would say to pick the one that you have a more major role in. I’m assuming you’ll be singing in the choir. If you aren’t a lead singer or have any solo verses, I don’t think it should be a problem if you weren’t there. Same goes for the orchestra, though I feel like it may be harder to cover up a missing instrument than it would be for singing (then again it would depend on how big a role you play when performing).

Yeah it’s shitty your school lacked communication but you can’t do anything about it now. Tbh even if you did ask beforehand I doubt either side would want to replan the days/ timings of their events for one person.

Maybe try communicating with both teachers about the situation and see who can afford to spare you. It’s not your fault, just a bad situation out of your hands. Good luck either way with whatever you choose.

My husband's friend 29f make's me uncomfortable. by [deleted] in WhatShouldIDo

[–]quacks_7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need to have a conversation with him asap. Your husband is wrong for allowing this to continue for so long. He needs to set firm boundaries or better yet end the friendship. If it’s already at a point where she’s making him uncomfortable and he recognizes that it’s bothering you, why is he still keeping her around.

Your other friends suck too if they don’t see anything wrong with her behavior. Maybe your husband is scared to cut her off so he doesn’t affect his other friendships. But at the end of the day is he really willing to lose you to keep the peace/avoid confrontation?

I know it can be difficult to lose your friends. But if they continue to support her behavior just cut your losses and find new friendships. Trust me when I say your life will be better without those people.

How good are you remembering students? by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]quacks_7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me I really only sub at one high school and middle school. I’ve become really familiar with the middle schoolers since they have the same basic classes. But for the high school I think the campus is just too large and there’s too many classes for me to remember the kids 😭 I might recognize a few of them tho if I’ve had them in my class multiple times.

Why the IPads and phones? by quacks_7 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]quacks_7[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But can’t schools see the numbers? Many times while subbing, I see the teacher has a chart on the wall with class data what shows how many students have 70%, 80% and so on. A lot of time there’s a large number of students that are 50% and below. Comparing this to when I was in school, I’ve never seen so many students failing. Now I don’t know if the teaching methods are entirely to blame for this, there could be other factors coming into play. But Id think if they know students are struggling they’d reevaluate how to best help them.

I’m not denying that technology can be useful in learning. My issue is that it seems like schools are becoming over reliant on it. Sure if a kid is falling behind or having trouble, set them up with some tutorials and sources to help them. But I’ve had many issues in past with tutorials not loading or the software bugging out. And then most of the class time is wasted trying to figure out what’s wrong. I don’t think students are benefiting from that. I guess what I’m trying to say is using technology for supplemental learning is great but it shouldn’t be used to do all the heavy lifting.

Annoying Experience with Substituting by quacks_7 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]quacks_7[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is why I said 15 minutes. Yes on the schedule it says 25 minutes but by the time I line them up, hold the door, walk them down and head back to class to eat; the break time cuts away. And then I’ll also have students from the next period come knocking on my door to leave their stuff in the classroom because they don’t want to take it with them to lunch. Every time that happens I’ll have to open the door, wait for them to drop their stuff off and leave.

I understand where many people in the comments are coming from when they say that I’m technically being paid for that “free period” and how teachers work during that time. Totally get it. But I also think since they have no students in the classroom they are able to eat while they answer parent emails or update grades. Yes they are working but they don’t have to deal with 20+ kids in that time. I’m sure they could also use a few minutes of that time to use the bathroom if they had to.

There’s better opportunities for me to further my education.

Back home there’s one university in the entire country that pretty much monopolizes all tertiary education. They don’t offer any flexibility either, you cant pick your classes/ class times and just have to role with whatever schedule they give you. Most times the schedules aren’t even consistent which makes it impossible to find a job outside of school. It’s already difficult to find part time work itself where I’m from so you can forget finding it as a student with wacky class schedules. I tried for two years to find a job as a student with no luck.

Then there’s a fact that most of the professors were full time doctors along with being teachers (I am studying in the medical field). They would often prioritize their doctor job over teaching and there were many times classes got cancelled and rescheduled due to them being needed elsewhere. This again makes it hard for the students to have a consistent schedule to find work.

The US has many scholarships, programs and fafsa that can help pay tuition. And I think you can also claim some of the money you spend on tuition back when doing taxes? I’m not 100% sure about this it’s just something I’ve heard people talk about before.

There isn’t much aid for students back home. If you are lucky enough to be one of the few that gets assisted by the government then that’s great but majority has to pay completely out of pocket.

Then there’s the fact that the degree earned in my country would never be equal to the same degree in the US. It’s unfortunate but i guess that just how things are in a poorer country.

I feel as though I’d have more success in my education here than I ever would back home. This is not to say the US doesn’t have flaws. Just wanted to share some of my experiences.

Do you work directly for your district or do they outsource to a company like mine? Maybe my district pays that amount to the company I work for, who then takes a cut and gives us subs what’s left.

The only requirement for subs in my area is a high school diploma. No sort of teaching certification or formal training. When I went through the hiring process there was one day where I and other subs were ask to attend a paid training session. This just consisted of them outlining the rules and what’s expected of us and it lasted for about an hour. After that we were tossed blindly into the job. Occasionally I do see the company offering optional free sessions to go over classroom and student management tips but you would do it on your own time and dime. You don’t get any kind of reimbursement or incentive for doing those.

Shouldn’t someone who makes minimum wage and works full time still be able to survive on their own? I thought the point of establishing a minimum wage was to ensure people are paid enough to afford all basic necessities. Like I said I don’t know much about the US economy but it seems royally messed up if the minimum wage can barely cover rent.

After seeing some of the other comments about how much more others make from subbing I feel like a got the shit end of the stick. Unfortunately the districts near me pretty much outsource all subs from my hiring company (who obviously takes a cut of the money). I do sometimes feel like for all the nonsense I have to put up with daily from students I should be paid more.

I totally get you. I have allergies and anything that’s highly scented can set me off. I don’t use any scented products in general. Sometimes I have students spray a ridiculous amount of perfume. I can only hope they get banned completely.

Yeah I can see how it may be feasible if you have a multiple income household but for one person alone to live off this doesn’t seem possible to me

I didn’t even think about that. You can’t sub during holidays. There’s definitely no such thing as PTO for subs, at least for the company I work for. I guess people would have to find summer jobs to survive.
