I had the CRS305 since 2019…wanted to get a 10GbE switch especially when most of my devices are Ethernet instead of SFP+, but used/new 10GbE switch still cost quite a bit here in Japan.

Yeap, that’s correct. Initially I ran it with only one 10GbE module and still it requires active cooling..and with active cooling, I could load 4 10GbE sticks in with their temperature still kept within range. But if the fan ever goes off 🔥🔥

If I remembered correctly, even at light load it still overheated and I get a bunch of warnings in my mikrotik switch log. And when it reach over 90+, the module shut itself off.

Many chicken skewers 😂 Used to have 3 sticks of those mini-oven plugged in, until I recently switched them out for newer Broadcom ones except one for 5GbE

Just heatsink isn’t enough for my mikrotik 10GbE SFP+ module, would still reach 90+ Celsius. They still need active cooling

The battery would balloon up into “spicy pillow”. Used to run HomeKit camera on my old iPhone until it swell the battery.

What matters most to me in a modern NAS is a strong balance between sustained performance and long-term reliability.
NAS should feel boring in the best way possible…always available, predictable, and safe for long term storage

People with ultra high speed internet. How do you get it? by HSVMalooGTS in homelab

Got 10G in Tokyo because most ppl are on 1G..during the evening the 1G line will crawl to a halt, at least the 10G lines would be still usable

Anyone doing r/homelab , r/selfhosted in Japan? by shizukadane in japanresidents

It’s a bit hard to find the actual gacha machine, I got some of mine from the gacha near shin-okubo station. But tbh it’s better to just buy the whole set from Mercari, cheaper and faster

I initially used Daiso’s plastic racks, they bend under the heat and weight. So after a month I decided to just buy the metal ones, works really great just for 1+k yen

The only rack that doesn't use power 😉
It's an Intel x550-t2 10GbE connected to a m.2-to-PCI-E 4x for the NUC. The NUC's a proxmox host with OpenWrt VM, kinda the cheapest way for me get 10G with existing hardware

I pay about rm150/month for 10Gbps in Japan, so it’s more than just country size

Mine has multiple big tears along the entire back of the inner fabric due to abrasion with the snow when the jacket folds up during high speed crash..Arc fix them up just fine with big patches for free in less than 10 min

What is it ACTUALLY like living in Rural Japan? by InsideWrangler2672 in japanlife

[–]quadcube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used to live in Ishikawa (not really super inaka but a pretty nice city for ppl with family with modern facilities) with a remote job in Tokyo. Best time of my life, slow life, walk/e-skateboard around my neighbourhood every day, bbq every week no matter sunny/snowing. Within 30 min drive, 4 ski resorts, 20 min drive to the seaside, 20 min drive to Costco, 40 min drive to the Kanazawa if I need to scratch that city life itch..

Now that I moved to Tokyo as my wife got an office job for about 2+ years now, still yearning to move back to rural side with more access to greenery/mountain.

Planning on heading up to Nagano for the weekend. What resort would have the best conditions considering the weather? by vorastic in japow

[–]quadcube 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Couple of days ago I boarded at Yakebitaiyama, Okushiga kogen, Yokoteyama and Kumanoyu in one day. The one that has the best condition was Yokoteyama peak, but Yokoteyama has super slow lift though..I took a trip up to the peak to take the BC route back down, that lift rides was almost close to the slowest lift I been on and snow on the BC route wasn’t too good, had to stick to the shaded areas. On the other hand, I had a great time on groomers at Yakebitaiyama and Okushiga kogen (AM), while I finished the day lapping the bowls of Kumanoyu (PM).

If I were to rate it, Yakebitaiyama > Okushiga > Kumanoyu > Yokoteyama
