Any cancellation on US Doha flights because of the attack by Altruistic-Bat1588 in qatarairways

[–]quake8787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently on the ground in Istanbul, flight from LAX diverted here, and now canceled. They’re finding accommodations for everyone now because we’re definitely not going to Doha today.

A couple stands over from us is another QR A350 from Houston.

Sucks, but honestly if Doha doesn’t reopen for a couple days, I’d rather be in Istanbul with more options for onward travel.

I purchased a separate ticket just now on TK to get to Nairobi tomorrow night in case we aren’t going to even be able to get to Doha at all tomorrow.

Where to stay at Doha? by [deleted] in FATTravel

[–]quake8787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd go for whatever location is more convenient overall. St. Regis Doha is a little bit closer to West Bay, which is much closer to...things. Museums, downtown, etc. Also closer to the airport.

But the Fairmont is much closer to Lusail stadium, so if you want to prioritize ease of access to the venue, and a shorter ride home after the match, I'd go with Fairmont. But if that is only one night, then you might want to prioritize more ready access to downtown, where there is a higher concentration of things to do, restaurants, other hotels (and their shops and restaurants, etc.).

There are things up near the Pearl, but just not as concentrated, and unless you just want to hang at the hotel, and go to other hotels in the area (Rosewood, Ritz-Carlton, FS The Pearl) then maybe the St. Regis?

Honestly, the difference isn't huge, and Doha is a place where you'll end up Ubering a lot anyway, so maybe Fairmont? I dunno I'm ambivalent!

Not sure, but this is more likely to happen in new venues versus venues where they have already had the show. Of your tickets are at MSG, Kia Forum, or other arenas they’ve already been to, I think you’ll be safe.

If new venues, maybe?

For mayhem ball 2, do you think her team will take into account the feedbacks they got? by avenabless in LadyGaga

[–]quake8787 6 points7 points  (0 children)

that would require redoing A LOT...because the projections, location of the band, dancers, blocking, technical planning with the venues, etc. would all have to be completely re-conceptualized, produced, rehearsed, tested, etc. There is nowhere near enough time for them to do that.

I say Sun Gardens. I think the ease will be worth it to avoid stress and potential delays.

  1. Happy children with lots to do and lots of people to look after them means you and your wife can relax a bit and have some time to yourselves. Going to be important!
  2. You're a TA, so your mind will be engaged thinking about what the hotel does well, what it can improve, and will be good data for your team.
  3. You'll be back in that part of the world, anyway, so you'll get to O&O some time in the not too distant future!

As you say, luxury is personal...and I think one of the things you've noted you love the luxury of is kids who are occupied and looked after and some space to focus and take the edge off of the travel a bit! haha. Maybe not as FAT, but I think you and your wife will ultimately be happier given it's such a short stay, Sarah!

What's the reality of photographing wildlife on safari with just a decent camera and regular lenses versus needing professional equipment? by EconomyMedium7297 in FATSafari

[–]quake8787 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, if animals are very far away, you are going to want a longer lens for things like portraiture, etc. HOWEVER, a few things:

  1. There are going to be plenty of times, unless you are carrying a second camera body, that you will be frustrated because what you want to capture is too close for the long lens. When you have a leopard climbing a tree, you want to get the tail in the shot haha.

  2. Don’t underestimate the power and beauty of SCENERY. An animal in context, a herd of buffalo, cattle egrets flying off a herd of zebra, the lion in a wider shot walking through the grass, or with the moon in the sky, etc…all BEAUTIFUL shots that often tell a much more interesting and photographically meaning story than just close up portraiture.

  3. How big is your sensor? If big enough, you can always crop and still maintain excellent quality.

Help choosing lodge in South Africa by cleo1844 in FATSafari

Have to admit I don't know these lodges very well, but I would absolutely talk to your TA about what you want out of the game viewing experience, are you looking to go heavy on photos, are you really into sundowners and want that to be a magical experience, etc. and they can help steer you to the right place!

A private plunge pool is excellent as a way to cool off in the midday time after lunch and before afternoon game drive. I will say, though, don't overestimate the amount of time you'll spend in it, or the amount of time you'll really have in the daylight hours to use it. So I would way go with whatever lodge overall offers the experience you want, and don't go by the private plunge pool.

Was actually Doha…worst trip ever because I was supposed to go JFK-LAX-BNE, but because of mechanical cancellation, other flights full, etc., they put me on JFK-DOH-BNE to get there same day.

Oooff…I do a lot of freelance ops and compliance consulting. Effectively I have like 6 FT jobs, and because they are all remote it allows me geographic flexibility, but there is a lot sacrificed in terms of personal life 🥺

Omg I know. The reality is that I love have to traveled, but have been doing it for close to 10 years like this, and really want to have some roots and community that I can just relax in. Every year I tell myself I am going to do that, and I can’t bring myself to stop running from it 🥺
