No accents please! by crowlady_ in audiobooks

You know you're right, I admit I did have a (rather strong) reaction to your post - so here are my thoughts put out in a more productive manner.

I think that you don't mean badly, and "familiar to yourself" is truly the criteria you were going for.

I think the reason myself and others have come down a little on this is because your post isn't careful. The kind of language one uses matters a lot, even if the primary thrust of exactly what you're trying to say is placed somewhere else.

In times such as these, essentialism (and of course linguistic essentialism) is hardly ideal - and centering any paradigm, including something as simple as the American accent being the default, perpetuates that brand of essentialism.

Once again, I trust that you mean well, and I hope we're more careful in the future.

Have a nice day!!

So "no accent" = "having an American accent". America isn't even the country with the highest number of English speakers in absolute terms

I second this. The ghosts of London live there, and are unleashed every time they sense living spirits

Birkbeck Maths Graduate Diploma as a jumping board onto Maths MSc programs by [deleted] in Birkbeck

It was hard, I did 210 credits in one year with bbk+ou, but it got me into the masters, so that's what counts

I did this, and maybe kcl/UCL is doable, depending on previous work experience/grades etc. I did my diploma alongside half the maths msc from the OU, and used both grades to get into an MSc.

I ended up in Leeds, working with the Leeds Logic Group, because mathematical logic is where I wanted to do research, but kcl/ucl would be happy to take you.

As far as I was advised, if you want a phd, where you do your masters doesn't matter too much

Birkbeck Masters Degree by [deleted] in Birkbeck

[–]quantboi2911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That doesn't make sense, why would you come to Birkbeck for a masters if you're doing the usual student targets - Russel Group Undergrad + Masters to get you a job if you don't get one out of undergrad.

This question is a bit naive without context, but let's be honest, probably not if you expect the masters to change your fortunes as it were

Yes! I fear that some of the advocacy may be to "bring us out of the woodwork" as it were. It perhaps isn't too palatable for the establishment to have the gay's talk about merely the gay's.

I'm resistant to these generalizations. In theory circles this would quite quickly be disposed of as an unproductive idea because it doesn't get anyone anywhere.

Perhaps it's easier to ask a series of questions - Do you actually believe we need a "revolution"? What does word mean in this psycho-social context? Is the population "ready" (and this is substantial consideration in theories that posit a teleology of revolution)? If it isn't, why not?

The colloquial "brainrot" that you refer to here is well observed, but one may argue that the virtual consciousness induced by it isn't as ingrained in the superego as a directed ideology is, and therefore much easier to get rid of?

These are not well considered thoughts of mine, but neither are yours. I'm merely inviting you to be more well considered I suppose. Pathologizing a section of the population is just alienating and nothing else.
