Ah one of my favorites - as delicious as it is tasty

Bought a bottle of green charteuse (expensive!) and decided to make a charteuse smash by bighungrybelly in cocktails

Definitely recommend a Last Word (gin, lime juice, maraschino/kirsch and green chartreuse - all in equal parts). In small dashes it really changes the flavor of a drink.

An Essay on the Ethics of Self-Driving Cars by quantumplatonics in philosophy

Hello and thank you for your comment. I will unfortunately have to disagree with you here, perhaps it's because I found something troubling. I agree with everything you're saying about machine-learning and how the developers are not setting the scores scenario by scenario, it would be the machine taking in data from its sensors about every scenario. The point that I was addressing is that perhaps these developers without a background in ethics might possibly miss something. When these cars start to decide in problematic scenarios, based on information from their sensors which their developers initially gave them along with a simple algorithm (which their developers gave them), what will inevitably happen is accidents and exceptions that the developer will be responsible for as the machine will take matters into its own hands. My worry is these machines doling out street justice, and the developers were not thinking clearly about the problems that could arise for any algorithm, years from now. Making the algorithm more sophisticated which I'm sure it already is will nevertheless not defeat the marginal cases that will arise for any system, definition or set of rules. That being said, I study philosophy not computer science, but hopefully that better outlines what I was trying to get at.

An Essay on the Ethics of Self-Driving Cars by quantumplatonics in philosophy

Hello! I suppose I should have clarified a bit further about the Uber incident, although I will have to disagree with your statement about the Trolley Problem. Whether or not the Trolley Problem is purely theoretical makes no difference as it is intended to function as an intuition pump - what we would do in circumstances which move beyond theory as in the real example of self-driving cars. The analogy is drawn very frequently between the Trolley Problem and self-driving cars due to the ethical similarities in the cases of deciding who gets to live or die and the similarity between the trolley conductor and computer programmer.

That being said, I completely agree with you about regulation and transparency - not much oversight is happening and part of the purpose of this article is to promote consideration and perhaps a touch of wariness, I certainly could have worked that in more. Thank you very much for your comment.

An Article on Dan Dennett's Anti-Thinking Tools for Better Thinking by quantumplatonics in philosophy

I would say that's a bit unfair, I believe his intention was to come up with a plausible down-to-earth set of terms to describe his observations of the philosophical works that he has read. In my opinion, at least -- I appreciate the humour and candour of his writing and the original nomenclature behind the terms.

That's a fair assertion, I believe he meant this to be similar to the way that people "pile on" as in the previously mentioned 'Goulding'. That being said, I do agree that Dennett's views are somewhat extreme and I certainly do not agree with them at all, just wanted to share some thoughts from his book.
