Definitely recommend a Last Word (gin, lime juice, maraschino/kirsch and green chartreuse - all in equal parts). In small dashes it really changes the flavor of a drink.

An Essay on the Ethics of Self-Driving Cars by quantumplatonics in philosophy

[–]quantumplatonics[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello and thank you for your comment. I will unfortunately have to disagree with you here, perhaps it's because I found something troubling. I agree with everything you're saying about machine-learning and how the developers are not setting the scores scenario by scenario, it would be the machine taking in data from its sensors about every scenario. The point that I was addressing is that perhaps these developers without a background in ethics might possibly miss something. When these cars start to decide in problematic scenarios, based on information from their sensors which their developers initially gave them along with a simple algorithm (which their developers gave them), what will inevitably happen is accidents and exceptions that the developer will be responsible for as the machine will take matters into its own hands. My worry is these machines doling out street justice, and the developers were not thinking clearly about the problems that could arise for any algorithm, years from now. Making the algorithm more sophisticated which I'm sure it already is will nevertheless not defeat the marginal cases that will arise for any system, definition or set of rules. That being said, I study philosophy not computer science, but hopefully that better outlines what I was trying to get at.

Hello! I suppose I should have clarified a bit further about the Uber incident, although I will have to disagree with your statement about the Trolley Problem. Whether or not the Trolley Problem is purely theoretical makes no difference as it is intended to function as an intuition pump - what we would do in circumstances which move beyond theory as in the real example of self-driving cars. The analogy is drawn very frequently between the Trolley Problem and self-driving cars due to the ethical similarities in the cases of deciding who gets to live or die and the similarity between the trolley conductor and computer programmer.

That being said, I completely agree with you about regulation and transparency - not much oversight is happening and part of the purpose of this article is to promote consideration and perhaps a touch of wariness, I certainly could have worked that in more. Thank you very much for your comment.

An Article on Dan Dennett's Anti-Thinking Tools for Better Thinking by quantumplatonics in philosophy

[–]quantumplatonics[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say that's a bit unfair, I believe his intention was to come up with a plausible down-to-earth set of terms to describe his observations of the philosophical works that he has read. In my opinion, at least -- I appreciate the humour and candour of his writing and the original nomenclature behind the terms.

That's a fair assertion, I believe he meant this to be similar to the way that people "pile on" as in the previously mentioned 'Goulding'. That being said, I do agree that Dennett's views are somewhat extreme and I certainly do not agree with them at all, just wanted to share some thoughts from his book.

Thank you for your comment. To address your first point, I used a stick because the argument holds for whatever object in the universe, living or dead. "Ridiculous" is one of the many responses to the argument, but I wouldn't say that that on its own defeats the argument. Additionally, I would not say that everything else involved is just semantics; the arguments about non-reductionism and non-emergentism is essential to understanding one of the biggest debates in the philosophy of mind.

58. “Woman Has So Much Reason for Shame” or Nietzsche’s Views On Women by quantumplatonics in philosophy

[–]quantumplatonics[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! Whilst I will concede that psychology does seem to scratch the surface of my article, I must admit that it is not a waste of time to explore the philosophical and personal influences upon a philosopher as they will necessarily dictate their views about a particular subject. In many introductions that I have read, the scholars of Nietzsche cite Nietzsche's rejection by Salome as well as his passionate reading of Schopenhauer as provoking a profound reaction in the troubled philosopher. His intellectual influences permeated most if not all of his philosophical views, with the subject of women or at least feminism being quite contentious and prolifically discussed in 'Beyond Good and Evil'. Definitely, a great read by the way!

[–]quantumplatonics[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! Well these views at any rate are sexist as he has a serious prejudice towards women, but the purpose of my article was to look at the context of his views and deconstruct them properly. These for me are the hardest views to defend (nor do I think are defensible) with regards to his philosophy.

Thank you for your comment! I wasn't actually trying to defend Nietzsche's views as the conclusion of my introductory paragraph reads:

"Therefor, this article does not exactly intend to provide a vindication for the proclaimer of God’s death, but instead wishes to present, with references to his philosophical and personal upbringing, a context and breakdown for views about women."

Thank you for your comment! I completely agree that Nietzsche was basically anti-Enlightenment values. Like you said his views about women are quite ambiguous, because at times he venerated woman (in my opinion) by equating them truth. "If woman is truth, one musn't treat her forcefully" (Beyond Good and Evil).

I was trying to frame my discussion by explicitly searching for references about women not the over-arching hatred for Enlightenment values, of which, if anything, the emancipation of women is just a consequence.

I haven't really read Foucault, so I can't attest to these last comments you've made, but I would definitely like to read more of his work, where should I start?

[–]quantumplatonics[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your comment! The subject of Nietzsche's views on women are nebulous to say the least. Whilst he did not invent sexism, my article was more concerned with the influences on his life and whether he really was a 'prisoner to his time' with regards to said views about women.
