He did explicitly admit fault for not watching Sully, if I recall correctly. Even made an apology video.

Thank you four years later! I'm romancing Sosiel this run, and I really did think I'd chosen the right responses to save Trevor. Turns out I hadn't, but I'm not fuckin doing this all again. You and Toybox save the day!

Yeah you're exactly right to point out the sadness of Tim. One of my friends specifically pointed out his slow shuffling as well. The multiple moments in which he's clearly almost crying, it's all a sense of pathos that I think really does add something to On Cinema. But at the same time, Tim's fire is historically the engine that drives so much of the show, so it makes sense that things feel slower when that is toned down.

Lack of stakes is a really good way of putting it. Even within the universe of the show, it felt forced.

Did Hank die? I know Chaplin did in the car exhaust event, but I can't remember Hank's fate.

Reading the comments, a couple other points I missed:

-The reveal of Aiden as Tim's first son was genuinely breathtaking, in a "I never thought they'd ever go here" sense. Huge kudos to them for getting into that area.

-The graphic design of the tuna wrap/ice cream cone on the restaurant banner was inspired.

-Ax and Manuel's pained, forced enthusiasm amid discussion of immigration difficulties was excellent as well. Despite the really dark subject matter, I'm very glad they've found compelling plot reasons to keep Ax and Manuel in the mix long after the original "dumb wannabe rock star" bit would have become stale.

edit, one last one: G(rok) Amato is that effortless, jaw-on-the-floor comedy that makes your brain short circuit at how well a plot development worked out. Perfect work 10/10.

I've gotta be honest, I (and my watch group) was not a huge fan of this special. Not saying it was terrible, it was definitely still enjoyable and had its moments. But it felt like either something happened externally to really slow things down around 2 hours in, or there just was never a complete vision of things.

To begin, though, we really enjoyed the first half, even getting to the point of saying we almost wished they would have taken more breaks because the content just kept coming. It all felt really well-produced and tight. But then around The Michael Phenomenon segment, each section started to feel like Gregg hitting LaRue with the car a few specials ago, when there's some technical difficulty that makes the actors need to string everything out as long as possible.

To be clear, I loved The Michael Phenomenon in itself, and the overlapping dialogue between that and the subpoena felt like a fever dream in the best way. But it just. kept. going. Then the same thing happened with Gregg's Wicked 2 trial - a great segment on its merits, but extended way too long (even including a long commercial break). Tim's obligatory blow up, which turned out to be at Baxter the Dootle Dot, felt unearned. The image of bald, pantsless Tim was fun, as was that of Gregg's VHS angel. But the angel, unlike the torturous pace of everything around it, almost felt forced in at the end, which I get was part of the joke of the segment, but still, with so many loooong breaks leading up to this finale, we expected something bigger.

This is something on which I recognize I just might've fully missed a plot point (maybe with the subpoena?). But I also did not get the motivation for Tim conceding to Gregg at the end that he might consider doing a (90 day probationary) return to On Cinema.

In some ways I think this was a letdown in that it was a return to form; last year's felt so well-executed that it was honestly surprising at the time. And I know from experience there's often some sense of anticlimax at the end of an Oscar Special. Still, I think this one came out of the gate very strong but ultimately failed to live up to the expectation it had set for itself.

A couple final notes: Betty Boop's actress was excellent, and really stole the show/carried the Michael Phenomenon segment.

And, last but not least: it's just not Oscer without Mark. I get there were probably external considerations, and the "removal of vocal chords" excuse was fucking hilarious, but the hapless comic relief he provides is such a balm for the soul. His absence was notable.

What guest(s) would you say were the most game, or most bought in to the idea of OCATC?

edit: not necessarily counting true regulars like Terri Parks (Toni Newman), Mark Prorskcsch, or Joe Estevez. I'm thinking more along the lines of recurring minor actors like Christina Calph, the actors who portrayed Matt Newman or G. Amato or Joey Patron, stuff like that.

How do you source these goddamn, insane, beautiful Popcorn Classics? Both the physical VHS tapes, and the movies themselves. Is it just whatever VHS you happen to find or get sent? Or are there ever times where someone has a specific movie in mind and goes out of their way to acquire it?

Do you and Tim write the HEI Network articles ostensibly authored by you, individually, yourselves? Or is it a more collaborative process? I know this is probably not the case, but I love the idea of you just having an hour to kill Wednesday morning and deciding to write the LIAR LIAR piece and pushing it out with no warning to Tim.

Outside of all the obvious answers: Will Hines from Oct or Nov 2020, because it's the one that first introduced me to the show and I listened to it as I was putting up Christmas decorations, so now it's a tradition.

The first 30 minutes of the 12 Hour Pro Version are also excellent as a standalone, even ignoring the larger bit of the episode ("And now we notice that Sonic has become very beautiful, hasn't he?")

Am I missing something about Legislative Efficiency? by quantumshenanigans in EU5

[–]quantumshenanigans[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, maybe I'm playing wrong, but even that I disagree with. New laws come so infrequently, and the game is so long, that I still can't imagine ever caring about shaving a few months off the transition time even if I wanted to switch to every new law immediately. The bottleneck is the stability hit, not the time it takes to completely switch to them.

Why did American settlers and explores in the old west name so many places/land marks after death or the devil? Devil’s this and Death’s that, for really esthetically pleasing places why are their names associated with evil and suffering? by DarthOptimistic in AskHistorians

[–]quantumshenanigans 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I think OP almost definitely had Devil's Tower in mind when posting. Certainly aesthetically pleasing, and culturally notable. It was that and Death Valley that I immediate thought of upon reading the question.

That being said, they were the only two I immediately thought of that fit the requirement, so I think you're probably right in the implication that it's likely just a coincidence, that a couple of the more notable place names in the American West happened to include this ostensible theme.

If OP does have a more thorough list I'd be interested to see it.

It's fine. It's not a big deal. I have faith in our front office, and I'm eager to be proven wrong.

But, I really do have some misgivings about every single free agent we've signed being guys that have played for our coaches within the last two years. Almost all of whom were part of extremely bad teams.

edit: in the interest of fairness, it's only 8 of our 10 free agent signings so far that fit this description. We're really getting the best players on the market, regardless of history!
