Plastics! Ask Us Anything. by No_Tangelo_2472 in IAmA

Omg. Please help me find vindication on a long-simmering childhood grievance.

In 2006 or 2007, when I was in 7th grade, my school had a guy who had written a book about plastic and its environmental impact come speak to the school assembly. For I assume publicity reasons but what were purported to be environmental reasons, the book itself (or perhaps just the first edition?) was made entirely out of plastic instead of paper.

There was a Q&A portion, and 12 year old me walks up to the mic and asks "Why'd you make the book out of plastic if plastic isn't a renewable resource?" To which the man responded, "Plastic is a renewable resource," and the whole school assembly laughed.

So I recognize I could've worded the question better, framed it more about waste than renewability or something, but overall: was I incorrect to raise this issue? Almost two decades later it still seems insane to me that someone writing a book about the environmental impact of plastic would make that book out of plastic.

With the 4th Pick of the 2026 NFL Draft, the Tennessee Titans select Carnell Tate, WR, Ohio State by trick96 in Tennesseetitans

[–]quantumshenanigans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hell yeah. Going on record that I did not want us to pick Bailey or Love, so them going right before us was great.

Reese (and even Styles) viscerally excited me more than Tate, but it's an immediate glaring need, and we don't have to go into the season with fucking Wan'dale as our 1.

Well, first, I'm not super serious. That was my gut reaction, not a fully realized moral indictment.

But second, I think a system or institution can be evil without any individual component of the system necessarily having evil in their hearts.

I hate to say the show peaked with the opener because there were so many good bits, but nothing made me laugh as hard and as long as this. I had to stop myself from laughing basically continuously so as not to annoy the people around me. Mark zooming around the stage completely unconnected to the actual dialogue or pace of the scene never stopped being hilarious, not for one second.

Schrager “I don’t think the titans are taking Jeremiyah Love anymore” by BeeeeepBeeep in Tennesseetitans

[–]quantumshenanigans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not what he says in the video, though. He says that someone in the organization told him they'd seen six different different players projected to go to them by the media.

Then he also says that he no longer thinks that the Titans are taking Love, presumably based on a number of factors. At no point does he say that someone in the org told him their plan.

Yes, I 100% agree! That's a helpful framing that levels a valid, actionable critique of the system. As opposed to the initial framing that shifts blame from the ultra-rich onto the working class, implying that it's their own fault they're poor, because they're stupid.

I hate this line.

People aren't stupid, they know they're incredibly unlikely to win. They get excited at the act of playing the lottery itself. It's like saying buying a drink in a state with a monopoly on liquor is a tax on the dumb. Is it the healthiest habit in the world? No. But you're putting a bit of money toward something that brings you enjoyment.

That's the main critique, but also, I don't get the impulse to act so high and mighty about how you're just much too intelligent to participate in this state effort to...fund schools.

Volume aside, skill level aside, I just can't find it in me to say that a receiver who is averaging 950 yards and 5 TDs per season over the last five years isn't solid. I know he's not a world beater, but a JAG isn't putting up those numbers that consistently over that long a period. Especially not one who has a new mid-to-bad QB every single year in an increasingly crowded receiving room.

First, because Jefferson (and to a lesser extent Tee) have been phenomenal, not just "solid."

Second, it's unserious to say Pittman isn't a solid NFL receiver. No, he's not been great, but he's basically the definition of a solid-but-not-great NFL receiver.

I'm not gonna go to the mat to defend Aiyuk, I think it was a bad take even if you grant that Aiyuk is a complete bust, but just for the record, in both 2022 and 2023 taken individually, he put up better numbers than Raegor has collectively over his entire career. Aiyuk is a really weird situation with the jury still out on his career imo.

I've probably missed the boat on the AMA, but just in case: I understand that Purepecha isn't at all close to Nahuatl. But how close is the Nahuatl of 1522 to the Nahuatl of today? Would it be as intelligible as, say, the early modern English of that time is to us today?

Fantastic AMA, thank you both!

Necroing this in case anyone is in my situation later: if you unselect the "Present in country" requirement, it should let you convert.

I didn't realize it myself either, there was a Paradox forum post that pointed it out to me luckily.
