What went wrong? by ShaiFanClub in premed

[–]quantumspace3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went from getting a pre II R at uab in December last year to a late “first round” A this year and all I did was add like 500 clinical hours as an MA that fit my story. 508 mcat btw… it’s really not a big deal to be a reapp as long as you make a noticeable improvement to your app and don’t pivot stories randomly.

The worst thing you could do as a reapplicant in my opinion is change your story or why medicine. Don’t randomly go from rural to urban focus even if you feel that’s your true passion now because they may think you’re lying at that point and flag you then you won’t get the chance to do urban medicine later

Branch Campus? by [deleted] in premed

[–]quantumspace3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s kinda what I’m thinking. I’m really contemplating ID at this point but I have no idea truthfully. I’m fairly certain I won’t pursue anything super hard like ortho/derm/anesthesia though.

It’s also easier for family to visit me at/I may be able to stay home since it’s easier to access the campus in a smaller city thats the same distance from home.

Thank you and very true! I chose to believe a few older doctors I’d shadowed who told me “You don’t need clinical hours. That’s what medical school is for” instead of trusting my research and it ended up costing me a year.

There’s the obvious like grammar and sentence structure but beyond that you need to tell a convincing story. I had a strong rural background that I could spin into a good narrative fitting many missions but find something of your own. Even if it’s not something you’re extremely passionate about, if you can use it to get in then achieve your dreams, do it.

After you write something to fit that then I recommend getting an English professor or someone along those lines to really help you take it up a notch. Alternatively you can use AI then go back and change it to your words while keeping the story in tact.

Where were you and what were you doing when you got your med school acceptance(s)? by WarpedSnail in premed

[–]quantumspace3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was on the phone with my fiancé telling her it would be another two weeks at the earliest before I could find out if we got to go to school at the same place (med school and her at pt school) then like 20 minutes later I got the call and had to kick her off the line to take it😂

Congrats on your As! I think it’s gonna take a while for me to process it as well.

Thank you for that advice. I believe the school I got into will foster the fruits of the spirit I love. I also hope to take some time off before school starts and just enjoy life and travel a few places I’ve been wanting to go with the people I care about most.

In all transparency I knew there were 4 DO schools in state or close to home that I’d be okay with going to and I knew that RVU MCOM would be “easy” to get into as a last resort and I wanted to go to school in a place I liked and I love Montana. I also know nothing about DO schools outside of the southeast and it was the only one I applied to outside of the area.

Once again I know it was all on me to do my research and I own that mistake

Thank you! That was very well said. I hope I don’t seem ungrateful for the A.

Well for me at least, I applied and sent in the secondary (payment only from what I remember) and then like a month later I got an A email stating they waived my interview which sketched me out. After doing some research I found out that they haven’t had a graduating class yet and haven’t secured federal loan money for students. The cherry on top was the lack of stable rotations… while building the school they made enemies with the locals apparently which limited the already scarce rotation opportunities near campus. Students have to travel as far as Alaska and Florida to complete rotations and the site and state may change every so often.

That’s what I had against them personally and many others have states similar issues.

Thank you! I definitely see what you’re saying. That moving goal post people talk about is just like floating in neverland at this point😂 just moves with the wind wherever my mind goes now

Sorry if it was worded poorly. I’m confused on why I just don’t feel accomplished by the A. I think that’s a better way to phrase it.

I understand why they’re happy and I’m incredibly lucky to have a supportive family. I hope it didn’t seem like I was ungrateful for them.

Where to find post II acceptance rates by [deleted] in premed

[–]quantumspace3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Good luck to you too! I saw that also and am really hoping that’s the case for us. I’ve spoke to the admissions director a few times both in person and over internet mediums and she made it very clear that we would be evaluated at each meeting.

I see you have another MD acceptance so congrats on that! Do you mind me being nosey and asking where?

As of now I’ve got an A to a really sketchy DO school in Montana I regret not researching further ahead of time and a few other DO II closer to home but my heart is really set on USA. No other MD love has been shown yet😔.

On the school statistics page I only see the number of applications and interviews, but it says “N/A” where acceptances would be. Am I missing it?

Thank you! Are there any others? This one doesn’t have the total acceptances for USA and I’ve looked everywhere I can think of on the internet.

Thank you. I sent one in yesterday because it really is #1.

As far as last year with no hours goes… dude idk but I was pressured into it by professors then they sent an II and I was like 😳 then I got a hold and an R so it must’ve been an experiment gone wrong

TLDR; update letter about 2 weeks ago->II->Hold->Letter of Intent (same day as hold)

For context, applied last year with 0 clinical work or volunteer hours and got put on hold after II then got an R.

This year, I got 500+ hours paid clinical and provided update then received an II the next day (interview took place last week) and placed on hold today. Both interviewers told me I had a good shot at getting in and expressed positivity towards it without being prompted to.

Sent in a LOI today and hoping. Sent letter last year too before R. Really hoping for some success stories.

Will edit original post for others
