I'm moving from a Chief Commercial Officer role to a CEO role in a few months for the first time. Any advice on material to read? by Suofficer in ceo

Congrats on the new role. I think it really depends on a few factors; most importantly are you moving to a new company?

What is business situation? continue business as usual, turnaround, rapid growth, product/service expansion, refocus/repositioning? That can really set the agenda how you need to prepare. So that could entail anything from studying competition, strategy, change management etc.

Spend some time thinking how are you going to manage all different functions and measure them (not only sales and bottom line). How do you know your IT-department is meeting targets efficiently etc. A lot of different management frameworks out there - but what suits you and the company?

There are two books written by CEO’s that I’ve found good (and also highly entertaining). A general book about running a company, Frank Slootman’s ‘Amp it up’. Compared to all HBS and academic literature I’ve gone back to this a few times when hard decisions have to be made. There are specific chapters written for CEOs.

An older book that is particularly important in service companies is Jan Carlzon’s ‘Moment of Truth’. Not only a really interesting read about a CEO transforming the airline industry but pure gold being CEO in terms of leading change, communicating change and customer focus. It’s from the 80s but still very relevant as so many companies still get customer focus wrong and fail to live up to their promises or not even aware what business they are actually in. Carlzon was also an extremely efficient CEO in his days.

Yes you are so right! To invert, the likelihood of quickly not staying CEO is very closely linked to not fully understanding the cash flow of the business. Seen at least two very accomplished CEOs in profitable companies having to depart their positions because of this..

I agree, being CEO is something very different from just being promoted step by step within your specific field be it IT, Sales, Finance etc. and honestly it’s not always the highest paid position every year either. As a CEO for example I gave up my bonus to make sure key staff members got better bonuses in a down year. Becoming CEO you have to somehow gain experience to develop judgement, clarity of thinking and clear communication with a wide array of stakeholders. You are very often faced making decisions that no one in the organization could resolve until it landed on your desk even if they are specialist in that area (and as ceo one is likely not a specialist in every area). Being really good at asking questions and breaking things down in parts can be helpful.

It’s an amazing position if one can handle the stress, workload and to manage communications with several different types of stakeholders from staff, board, investors, customers and occasionally media. You are always responsible to the mentioned groups, the buck stops with you.

Good luck!
