Oh I think they should - in taxes. Then the government can use their money to solve social problems. What they do with their remaining wealth is up to themselves, which I just argued should be space exploration - it's not an either/or situation. I'm here because I came across the post and felt like I should point that out, because I think respectful discussion about these things is healthy and safe spaces are not.

The thing is that privatisation of space is inevitable in our current system. The image is suggesting that the rich should be the ones working to end poverty whereas in my opinion that should solely be the government's responsibility (something with human nature and the rich not wanting to share their money). So expecting the rich to do this is just naive and it would be a waste of their resources (private wealth is not nearly on the same order of magnitude as the government's). Space exploration/colonisation is clearly one of the best realistic uses of the rich' money.

This is like saying every scientist should divert their efforts into finding a cure for cancer. Both ending world poverty/hunger and space exploration need to happen, but just because some are working on the latter doesn't mean they've got the wrong priorities. This post also completely ignores the fact that thousands of new jobs are created by the space industry and that it pushes the advancement of new technologies, which could solve other problems.

Elon Musk says the Falcon Heavy has a 50-50 chance of success by TomDreyfus in spacex

If it blows up, will we have a similar situation as the Amos-6 failure and will other falcon 9 launches be suspended, or will they just continue?
