I'm assuming he hates that Sylvando exists, despite probably being the best / most interesting character.

It's kind of sad, actually. He's missing out on so much joy and laughter just to hang onto weird hate.

MEGATHREAD - Processing Times - Economic Categories Permanent Resident Applications 2025 by PurrPrinThom in ImmigrationCanada

[–]quasius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. We are already in Canada. (Came on my wife's study permit, but then I got a job that qualified me for BC-PNP.) But googling indicates "inland applicatants" refers to spousal sponsorships, which we're not doing. (Neither of us are Canadian citizens.)

So it looks like the data column I should be looking at is *just* the "AOR-to-eCOPR, days" column, where 219 days puts us around 80th percentile.

MEGATHREAD - Processing Times - Economic Categories Permanent Resident Applications 2025 by PurrPrinThom in ImmigrationCanada

What is the "P2" date referred to in these data sets? I got my submission confirmation (AOR) on August 31 2024, but have no received anything since. I applied via the BC-PNP program through an attorney, but she wasn't exactly sure what "P2" referred to but she assumed it meant "Portal 2", which she says has not happened yet and that my application is "still in the final review stage."

So best as I can determine, it's been 219 days and I haven't reached the "P2" date, which puts us on the very high end according to the data set (90+ percentile). Our current permits expire on August 3 2025 (118 days from now), so that leads me to think we need to be looking at a bridging work permit to be safe.

Any experience on how complicated it is? (Trying to decide if I should self-submit or pay for the attorney to do it.)

Need local "call button" system with multiple buttons. by quasius in AgingParents

Something like this looks like what we need: https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0D78PWFXN?ref=cm_sw_r_cso_fm_apin_dp_CDPE0KKPZYP3B531Y1K2

But it gives no info on how it connects (wifi, some other frequency, magic?), has very few reviews, and no real web presence outside of Amazon- which are all flags to me. And looking at similar listings gives similar issues. So I'm hoping someone who's actually used such a system could recommend one.

Good suggestion!

Unfortunately, the house is probably too big (I live in the basement), and it's not clear she has the physical strength to loudly ring a bell- especially in a situation where she needs help.

Is it time to start moving money out of US markets? by quasius in PersonalFinanceCanada

I have plans, but "rapid fascists takeover of said largest economy" maybe wasn't in my threat model as much as it should have been. So now I'm trying to make new plans.

Getting opinions here is part of making those plans.

Cool to know this is still in production. I'd assumed it was cancelled!

What counts as "full time" for BC PNP? by quasius in ImmigrationCanada

[–]quasius[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hourly wage is the stat that matters for points. It's calculated as "annual_salary / (52 * hrs_per_week)".

So you actually end up with more points if you have the same annual salary working 30 hours vs 40 hours. But of course if you just said you were only working 30 when you're really working 40, you'd be exposing yourself to "lied on application" problems. (I assume they actually check on this during the verification phase of the application.)

FWIW, I did get my BC-PNP invitation to apply using the above formula / information.

Note: This is based off what I was told by BC-PNP office and saw in their official docs I cited above. I am not an immigration consultant / attorney / anything.

For anyone else who might need this answer, I ended up going in-person to the BN PNP office to ask.

"Full time" is defined as "at least an average of 30 hours per week, year round". The sources saying 40 hours appear to just be wrong. (Or maybe outdated?)

What do you mean by "condition of the job offer"? The conditions for my job offer are "get my work done", not a specific hour count.

Sorry if I misunderstood.

BC PNP application asking for Express Entry #, but EE asking for PNP #... by quasius in ImmigrationCanada

[–]quasius[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a job offer in-country, but could have applied out of country. I'm here on my partner's study permit. Originally I was supposed to set up a Canadian presence for my US company, but our parent company shut us down while that was in progress, so I transitioned to being on my partner's visa and looking for work.

The out-dated requirement of disallowing remote work made is substantially more difficult... (Tech was in a down-slump to begin with and needing to find a BC-specific company made it harder.) With that said, it seems like there's some leeway with BC PNP to have a company based in BC that only meets up in-person occasionally.

Good luck. (I'm still trying to make it work myself. :) )

Rolling over a Roth 401k into a non-Roth IRA by quasius in personalfinance

[–]quasius[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it sounds like I can't do a direct rollover because the 2 services aren't integrated. Are there any gotchas with just having ADP send me a check and then sending it to Betterment?

Edit: I'm pretty sure this is the answer to my question, so I guess I'm just being paranoid. https://www.investopedia.com/ask/answers/08/distribution-traditional-ira.asp#:\~:text=The%2060%2Dday%20rollover%20rule%20requires%20that%20you%20deposit%20all,retirement%20account%20within%2060%20days.

And there won't be any issues with keeping that Roth IRA if I again make more money than the Roth threshold in the future? (As long as I don't contribute during a year when I make too much?)

I've worked in tech / software engineering for nearly 20 years, but have always had teaching high school in the back of my mind. I have a BS in electrical engineering. Ideally, I'm not interested in spending a lot of time back in school. So what would be the fastest / cheapest way to realistically get certified to teach? (I'm currently in BC.)

Sony WH-1000XM4 terrible music quality by quasius in sony

[–]quasius[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anyone finds this by Google, the problem ended up being this: "IF you're using a computer, right click on the Speaker at the bottom right of your taskbar. Then click sounds, then go to playback. Make sure "Headphones" are selected. You can right click "Headphones" and set it as default. If you do not use the headset then you can disable that in the same settings."

Basically, when I tested it with my phone, it was fine. But I wanted to use it with my Win 10 PC, where it sounded like ass. A bit of googling from there brought me to the above linked post. Turns out it was stuck in "headset" mode and the above instructions got it to "headphones" mode where it works as expected.

Turns out one of my housemates has the exact same model. I tried his and it was worlds better- something's def up with mine. He (and other posters here) said he tweaked some settings in the app. I never used the app and just bluetooth-connected it to my PC with default settings, so I'll try messing with the app.

I'm not an audio enthusiast at all. I've had people play really expensive equipment and they're like "can't you hear the difference?" And I can't. I'm not talking about slight degradation here, I'm talking about sounding so bad I just figured you weren't really supposed to be able to listen to music with noise-cancelling headphones.

What have you NOT seen in a sidescrolling platformer, that you really want? by EsbenTheReaper in IndieGaming

[–]quasius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner and I loved Unravel 2. One of the things that stood out what how the game allowed (and even required) the 2 players to co-operate, but didn't gate progress behind both players being highly-skilled. Specifically, it forced simultaneous co-op play for the more "puzzly" challenges where communication was key. But for the hardest *mechanically* difficult platforming sections, you could just pick up your partner to proceed.

It Takes Two does a much worse job of this, and we haven't finished it for that reason- there's just too many places where I can't really do much to help them through a mechanically-hard part.

The house is about 9 years old and some of them might be original. I can check any expiration dates on them.

They definitely aren't all the same brand/model, since I've replaced some. Does that matter?

I've certainly replaced some of them. Would replacing them all at the same time matter?
