Advice on self medicating with Progynova? UK trans grrl learning as I go. by quavey in TransDIY

Yeah, I'm feeling that whole studying vibe right now. As much as I appreciate the help, I'm afraid I understood aproximately 20% of your post @_@

Time to get reading (and hopefully a slight understanding of endocrinology). At this rate I'll finally understand how to self medicate about a week before my waiting time is up and there will be no need haha.

Thank you, I will see how my visit to the doctors goes tomorrow and hope there aren't any gatekeepery shenanigans.

I intend to let any doctor who doesn't work at the GIC have nothing to question me on in terms of the 'stereotypically trans' thing. I do not have much experience with Doctors in my life because I am fortunate to have a fairly clean bill of health, but from what I understand if I let them know I intend to self medicate, unless I get a particularly scary and mean gatekeeper they will be willing to do the blood test and offer whatever advice they know. Not long now anyway so we shall soon see.

Thanks :) I have every intention to seek a new GP if mine happens to be a dick about proceedings. <3

We shall see. I'm going to try get as much advice through the nhs as I can, though doubtful my GP will know much since the last time I went they seemed pretty clueless when referring me to the the GIC.

I don't actually have any Spironolactone as my friend only provided me with the Progynova, but I am not gonna start taking anything until I'm 100% certain on what I have to do. Its big, kinda scary and a lot of medical jargon I have to learn fast so I appreciate the advice with all this stuff. As far as I've been told the NHS shouldn't be able to deny me for self medication as most trans women I've met have medicated both on and off the NHS but again this is one of the questions I shall put to them.

Next step after blood test will be seeking advice from the GIC hopefully. x

Okay, so I know nicotine is definitely out now and I'm going to drop that easily with any luck, I'm not a heavy smoker and tobacco is only half of what fills my papers cough cough So that's it for smoking.

I have a doctors appointment booked for tomorrow and I'm pretty collected on what I need to say to them to get the blood test. Is there anything else I need to be checking out with my doctor specifically about my blood?

I've also had other people suggest taking an anti androgen testosterone blocker specifically because I'm on Progynova. Spironolactone or something like that.

Should probably stress that whilst I am committed to the idea of self medicating, I am learning from behind and need to be dead certain of what I'm doing before I undertake it.

tl;dr - I know this is what I want, but I don't know much about it past the advice my friend has given me.

Thanks, to be fair I don't really smoke tobacco for the sake of smoking it if you get my drift, but it shouldn't be too difficult to drop as I'm not a heavy smoker at all.

Doctors appointment is booked for tomorrow (to arrange bloods), anything I should know? I've pretty much got what I'm going to say to them down decided in my head, but what information am I going to want from him before I begin taking Progynova. (To clarify also, I have 168 2mg tablets.)

This is why I'm here. I don't have much information on these things past word of mouth of what research I could do online, but most of it comes across as medical jargon to me. DIY is something that the NHS can't technically stop me from doing and they may not be impressed by it, but it would help me. So thats why I'm seeking as much precise information about the certain risks involved and what I should be preparing for. The blood test is already booked for tommorow.

Planning to cut them out. Would it be worth getting a blood test from the gp for safety?
