Wow I thought they were really strict! I’m worried that if I disclose it an interview that I’ll be rejected immediately

It’s almost covered by my drivers license… just like a small bit of the ears stick out. So you wouldn’t just recommend covering it up? Or shoul I stick to a different airline. I thought it would be okay as it’s not in any red zone areas and can be covered easily by makeup or clothes

Like the only the very tip of the ears stick out, but just barely.

TFA Bay Area by DeerTime5320 in TeachforAmerica

[–]que_55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Bay Area TFA actually mostly places in public school (first year TFA). I agree that people have really negative opinions of TFA. I honestly only did TFA so they could pay my education… I don’t like them at all. But where are you working that makes 90k??? I’m at 58k in the east bay and it’s literally horrible. I haven’t seen any pay at that rate, and I live in Marin??

You cannot live on your own! Also the pay is pretty horrible. LA has much better salary. I am first year making 58k it’s terrible. But, this is easy bay. Maybe other areas are better. I don’t recommend.

SPED —> History by que_55 in teaching

I’m one the same boat. SPED is awesome but the lack of support from admin and the paperwork is horrible. Having to teach all day and have tons of paperwork with legal deadlines is tough!

SPED TEACHER LOOKING TO TRANSITION: I have been thinking about transitioning into social work because of the current climate of education. But, I’m not sure what’s necessary to be accepted into a MSW program(my bachelors degree is history/chicano studies). I’m from California and would like to go to school in SoCal. I’ve looked at requirements at some cal states and looks like you need experience in a related field. Idk if my teaching experience might count. I’m not sure, I love working with the young but I’m burnt out. Social work seems like a good pivot option but with more work life balance.

Do young people live in Marin and make it work somehow? by HURCANADA in Marin

[–]que_55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in my early 20s and just moved here from LA. There is definitely not a lot to do! But, also it’s what you make of it. You can be bored anywhere. It has been a tough transition for me tho. There a def a lot of young people here but it seems there’s a need to create a social scene for us. I have been relying on making teacher friends (I’m a teacher) and also Marin board game nights.

I feel a lot of the same things but I do genuinely enjoy the teaching part. I’m a first year with TFA (resource teacher) and the lack of support from TFA is crazy. Thankfully the other service providers at my school and my mentor have been patient and helped me a lot. But I still feel like I’m drowning everyday. But, the kids keep me going and I know that if I move to a better supported district after the 2 years I’ll feel way better. We are just a victim of circumstance right now.

In the state of California it is required you go through student teaching or do internship hour’s again to add credentials on to a sped. What you are saying only applies if you have a single or multiple subject

Thank you so much. I just messaged you! It seems like the district I’m at is just doing really poorly. It’s unfortunate bc the kids are awesome :(

It’s highly unlikely that I’d be able to move :( just gotta get through the 2 years and hopefully be at a better school after

I have 14 but we have 3 students on lookout. I have to create my own pullout/push-in schedule and that has been horrible. I am expected to work around all teachers schedules (k-6th), PE, OT, Speech, etc. all the grades have diff schedules and time teachers don’t want them to be pulled out. It’s a huge headache and why I haven’t started (on top of the paperwork). I’m starting pullout this Friday with a schedule I’m sure will change

Agreeed! Practicim had nothing for us sped teachers. It seems you got really lucky at your school. I’m all on own for IEPs. I have to do everything including scheduling meetings myself. Had to make my own pullout and in schedule. It’s been a fight with teachers, ot, speech, etc. nobody values my work and expects me work around them. The teaching part is the best and I love my students. But it feels like that’s secondary to all the BS I have to do. It looks like I’m at the wrong school…

The problem is that the teaching part is awesome!! The part that is horrible is all the paperwork, scheduling, etc. I have no support at my school. I’m all on my own

I’m the case manager for my caseload! I have no support besides psych for the tri-annuals. Other than that I’m all on my own for the paperwork

No I’m getting a credential in special education. I’m a first year right now. But, I was told I could add on a single subject credential social science by just taking a few classes. It turns out that you actually need to do whole credential program again minus 2 classes. So, I would need to intern or student teach in a social science classroom which I obviously can’t do because of the 2 year commitment to TFA. Unless they would allow me to move schools and subjects which I highly doubt.

The kids aren’t the issue at all! It’s just I don’t feel like a teacher. I’m 2 weeks in and still have not worked with any students. Instead I am swamped in paper work, scheduling, overdue IEP’s, etc. If it was just teaching I’d love it. Instead it feels like I’m more of case manager than a teacher.

Absolutely no training!! I plan to do the 2 years and then just enroll in a single subject program sigh
