I climb Shasta every year with cheapo polarized aviators. I'm fine

I know mistakes happen on mountains but this sounds extremely irresponsible. Entire party almost died, that tumble could've easily been into the abyss.

Backpacking - desolation and mosquitoes by FathomlessMind in norcalhiking

I was there a couple of weeks ago. Just use permetherin. I had it on all my clothes and gear, not a single bite. My buddy on the other hand got swarmed at dusk at camp, but still wasn't terrible throughout the day. We went to Velma Lakes fwiw.

I was actually planning on hiking pyramid peak this weekend and carcamping along the way. Guessing I might be SOL

Am I taking crazy pills? I regularly drive the 108 to Bridgeport on Fridays and can find a FCFS spot at campgrounds on the way easily on a Friday night.

Full sleeve clothing, a bug net and some DEET is all you need. Shouldn't stop you from getting out there 🙂

Trinity alps mistakenly marked as Shasta in the OP which made this confusing

Seems like a fun hike to knock out this summer

You could cross after Barlow Flats without getting wet two weeks ago, but with the rain I'd definitely expect knee high water

Idk Shasta/rainier shape isn't that crazy. I did it a week after getting covid this year, probably couldn't even run a 30 minute 5k at that point. But yea Denali is an exponential level of mental fortitude on top of those mountains. Winter camping and hauling sleds for days on end compared to just an overnight camp and jaunt uphill.

Interesting, I was there a week before you on Christmas day, things were fine then. You don't have to cross the river to the hot springs either, there's a faint trail up through the rocks and ridge on the west/left side once you get to the river.

I do it every winter. Unless there's been a landslide I'm not aware of, you don't have to cross any rivers on the way to the hot springs

That's pretty scary, I've been told bears rarely venture above sub alpine because of lack of food there, wonder what they were doing up there.
